OSCAR IRA TOMBLIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPEEDQMETER GEAR AND SWIVEL-JOIN T PROTECTOR.
mo e-e1.
" Specification of Letters Patent.
-Patented Maul 1, 1922.
Application filed January 22, 1921. Serial No. 439,119.
Be it known that I, Oscar: 1m TOMBLIN, a citizen of the United States, and-a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State oflllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speedometer Gear and Swivel-Joint Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in speedometer gear and swivel'joint protectors, and has for its principal object the provision of a protector or cover which will swing or turn laterallyv with the wheel, and will keep Said joint properly covered at all times.
Another object is to provide a cover which is simple .in construction, durable and efficient in use, and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawin s forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is an elevational end view, showing the protector mounted on the spindle body;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a protector for a speedometer gear which has the pinion and swivel joint located rearward of the spindle body;
Fig. 3 is a side view, showing the protector in position with part of the covering plate broken away; and
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a protector for a speedometer gear which has the pinion and swivel joint located forward of the spindle body.
The form'illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a main protecting strip or strap 6 having downwardly curved ends 7 to which are fastened, as by bolts 8 or the like, bent ends 9 of a supporting strap 10 which cooperates with the yoke 11 fastened thereto, as by bolts 12 or the like, to support the protector'on the spindle body 13. The brace bar 14 extends from the strap 6 to the strap 10, being fastened to the latter by one of the bolts 12 and to the former by a rivet or bolt 15. A plate 16', having a side flange 17 and a front flange 18, is fastened over the strap 6 rearwardof the yoke 11, as by a rivet 19 and the member 15, and extends laterally from said strap. A brace arnr 20, extending laterally from the bar 1 1, is fastened to the gear and ed forward of the front flange 18 of said plate, as by means of a member 21.
The form of protector illustrated in Figs. 3 and 1 is substantially the same as the one disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 except for the construction and location of the covering plate. lt comprises a strap 6 having downwar lly curved ends 7' to which are fastened, as by bolts 8, the bent ends 9 of the supporting strap 10 which co-operates with the yoke 11 fastened thereto, as by members 12, to embrace the spindle body and support the protector thereon. r brace bar 14 extends from the strap 6, to the strap 10, being fastened to the latter by one of the members 12. 'to the former by a member 15. A plate 16 having a side flange 17 and a front flange 18 is fastened over the strap 6', forward of the yoke 11, as by a rivet 19, and extends laterally from said strap.
The strap 10 and yoke 11 embrace the spindle body and are fastened thereon by tightening the nuts on the bolts 12, the main strap being mounted over the main gear 22 and pinion 23 and the plate 16 or 16, in either of the two forms, positioned over said pinion and the swivel joint 24. hen the pinion and swivel joint are located rearward of the main gear and spindle body of the automobile or motor vehicle, the form of protector illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is used; when said pinion and swivel joint are locatmain gear and s indle body on the automobile, the form of pro- .tector illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 is used.
In either form of the invention, the protector, owing to its rigid connection on the spindle body, swings laterally with said spindle body and the attached Wheel, and at all times retains its proper position over the speedometer gear and swivel joint. The protector disclosed is especially adapted for the speedometer gear and swivel joint mounted on a Ford automobile, but may be also used or adapted for use on cars of other make.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying m invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as neW and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
1. In an automobile provided. withv a swivel joint, speedometer gear and spindle body; a protector for said gear; a covering member for said swivel joint, attached to said protector; and means on said protector for supporting the same on the spindle body.
2. A speedometer gear and swivel joint protector, comprising a main covering member; a laterally extending covering member mounted thereon and provided with downwardly extending flanges; and means for mounting said protector to swing with said gear and joint.
In an automobile having a spindle body and a spindle gear mounted on one of its wheels; a protector for covering said gear; a supporting member on said protector, engaging the spindle body; and a yoke mounted on said member, cooperating therewith to embrace the spindle body and rigidly mount the. protector thereon.
4. A speedometer gear protector comprising a main covering member for the gear; a laterally extending covering member directly attached thereto, and provided with protecting flanges; a supporting member on said main member; and a curved clamping member to cooperate with said supporting member for supporting said protector on the spindle body.
5. In an automobile having a spindle body.
protector comprising a covering member for the'main gear and a plate attached to said member to cover the swivel joint and pinion; and means on said protector to rigidly mount the same on the spindle body.
6. A speedometer gear protector, comprising a main covering member for the gear; a laterally extending covering member directly attached to said main member for covering the swivel joint; and supporting means to clamp said protector on the spindle body of the automobile for turning with said spindle body. v
7. A speedometergear protector, comprising a covering strap; a-covering plate attached thereto and extending laterally therefrom; a supporting strap attached to said covering strap; anda supporting yokeon"
