VALVE DEVICE FOR VACUUM CONTAINERS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J oHN EDWARD THE- BAUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in valve Devices for Vacuum sontainers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of t is specification.
Like figures of reference refer to like parts.
This invention relates to valve devices for vacuum containers.
@ne of the objects of this invention is to provide a practical air valve device for'fruit and other jars whereby with the use of a suction pump, the air inside a closed jar may be exhausted and the lid held on by atmospheric air pressure.
Another object is to provide a valve de vice which can be easily opened, one which is simple in construction and easily taken apart for cleaning. v
A further object is to provide a-valve device for vacuum containers with means for releasing the valve.
A further object is to provide means for retaining the valve in proximity to its seat, when not held thereon by air pressure.
With these and other objects my invention consists in certain construction some embodiments of which are illustrated in the drawings, are hereinafter described, the operation is explained and what I claim is set forth.

Referring to F igures 1, 2, 3, i and 5, there 1s shown resting upon the shoulder l, of the jar 2, a rubber ring 3 upon which is seated a lid 4:. The central portion of the lid 4.- is formed into a pocket 5, having an upwardly curved valve seat 6 with a hole '7. Upon the seat 6 rests a rubber washer 8, supporting the valve 9 which rests upon its peripheral edge 10 upon the rubber washer 8. The top of the valve 9 is recessed to form a rim 11.,
Surrounding the valve 9 is a sheet metal shield 12 having in-curved walls: 13 peripherally slotted about a the way around 14 near the top as between A and B of Figure 2, and is vertically divided at 15 and normally sprung outward to press against the wall 16 of the-pocket 5, to hold it in place therein. There is a slot at 17 in the top of the shield and a clown-turned ear 18 at one side thereof.
An l. lever 19 is pivoted at 20 to the car 18, and has a long leg 21 positioned to swing in and out of the slot 17, and a leg positioned to tilt the valve 9 when the leg 21 is raised. 7
Referring to Figures 6 and 7 like parts to those .shown in the figures above described are similarly numbered. The shield is similar in shape to the, shield 12 except that it has a round hole 24 in place of the slot 17.
Figure 8 shows a valve piece 25 having its peripheral edge 25* resting upon a rubber washer 26 upon a flat seat 27 within a valve pocket 28. A shield 29 is spring pressed within the pocket 28 and has a hole 30. There is a knob 31 upon the valve 25.
Referring to Figure 9, parts similar to those shown in Figures 1 and 6 are similarly numbered. The shield 32 shown in section in this figure is preferably a rubber washer elastically pressed the recess 34:.
In operation, referring to Figures 1, 2, 3, and the rubber end 35 of a suction pump is placed upon the lid 4: and is operated to draw the air from the jar 2 through the hole 7, until the space within the jar beneath Serial no. 447,557.

To allow air to re-enter the jar 2 the L- lever 19 is raised to the dotted line position 19 and the valve 9 is partly raised by the leg 22, as indicated at 9? which permits air to pass thereunder down into thejar through the hole 7. I
In the form of my device shown in Figure 6, the valve 9 can be tilted by means of a pointed tool P pressed against the rim 11, in a direction horizontally away from the center of the valve.
Having described my invention'I claim:
1. A vacuum vent of the class described, comprising a lid, a valve device including a pocket in said lid, a valve seat in the bottom of said pocket having a part therein communicating with the inside of said container, a pliable washer fitting said seat and a cup-shaped valve havin its lower rim peripherally contacting said washer, said washer and seat being convex and extending upwardly into the cup shaped valve.
2. A vacuum vent of the class described, comprising a lid, a valve device including a pocket in said lid, a valve seatin the bottom of said pocket having a part therein communicating with the inside of the said container, a pliable washer fitting said seat, a cup-shaped valve having its lower rim peripherally contacting said washer, and a thimble-shield frictionally fitting down into said pocket and surrounding said valve there being a hole in the top of said thimbleshield through which to insert an instrument to release said valve from air pressed contact with said washer.
3. A vacuum vent of the class described, comprising a lid, a valve device including a pocket in said lid, a valve seat in the bottom of said pocket having a part communicating with the inside of the said container, a pliable washer fitting said seat, a valve upon said washer, a detachable m eans frictionally fitting said pocket to retain' said valvetherein.
4. A vacuum vent of the class described, comprising a lid, a valve device including a valve seat carried bythe lid, a pliable washer fitting said seat, a valve restlng upon said washer, releasable means for retaining said valve in operative adjustment, with said washer, and a valve lifting member connected with said means for partially raising said valve to release the same from sealed con- .tact with said washer.
5. A vacuum vent of the class described, comprising a lid, a valve device including a valve seat carried by the lid, a pliable washer fitting said seat, a valve resting upon'said washer, releasable means for retaining said valve in operative adjustment with said washer, and a valve lifting lever fulcrumed upon said means having one leg of the lever positioned for lifting by hand and the other leg of the lever adapted to be swung against the valve to rock the same from air sealed contact with said washer.
6. A vacuum vent ofthe class described, comprising a lid, a valve device including a pocket in said lid, a valve seat in the bottom of said pocket having a part therein communicating with the inside of the said container, a pliable washer fitting said seat, a cup-shaped valve having its lower rim peripherally contacting said washer, and a ring frictionally positioned in the upper part of said pocket, to retain said valve device, the hole in said ring being smaller than said valve device, said hole permitting the insertion of an instrument to release said valve from air pressed contact with said washer.
7. A vacuum vent of the class described,
