To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. LEWIS P. HALLADAY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Decatur, in the county of Macon and tate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bumper Bars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automobile bumper bars. and has for one ob ject to provide a new and improved form of bumper bar which will have a broad vertically disposed face throughout substantially its entire length without undue increase 1n weight. Another object is to provide a bumper bar which will be rigid, light. sightly. and easy to manufacture. Other objects will appear from time to time throughout the specification.
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the arrangements shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detailed front elevation of a modified form of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 3.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a further modified form.
Fi ure 6 is a front elevation of one end of the orm shown in Figure 5.
Like parts are indicated by like characters throughout in the drawings.
The bumper bar itself is made 11 of two identically flat, relatively thin meta lic strip members interlocking so as to form a single unitary structure.
The upper member A throughout the major portion of its length substantially horizontally disposed being downwardly bent at its left hand end only as at A where it meets its terminal joint with the lower member. and at the other end the member is downwardly bent at its end as at A. This downwardly bent end is rearwardly curved back on itself as at A and brought back behind the impact face of the bumper at A. At the extremeend it is bent forwardly as at A and then again laterally at A where it is bolted to a vertical spacing piece A, which piece extends above and below the part A and is bolted to the upper and lower members.
The lower member B is parallel with the upper member A. It is bent upwardly at B to its junction point with the member Specification of Letters Patent.

A where it is bolted to the back side thereof as at B. At the other end it is bent upwardly as at B, bolted to the end of the upper member at B bent around at B extends back on itself toward the center of the bumper as at B, is then bent upward at B, sideward at B and is bolted to the vertical piece B which in turn is bolted to the upper and lower members A and B. It will be noted that the shorter end of each member comes behind the opposed member so that the two members in a sense interlock.
C C are brackets :idjustable along the lnemlurrs A B being adapted to be held in position by set screws C and clamped to the goose necked ends C of the forwardly extending bumper lnr supporting members C, which members are adapted to be mounted on the automobile frame by suitable means not here shown.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and i 4 the vertical members A B are dispensed with. The inward rear ends of each of the members are bifurcated as at D, one end being upwardly bent and the other downw nrdly to be bolted to the upper and lower members.
In the modified form shown in Figures 5 and 6 the im uct strips mstead of being bent back upon t emselves, terminate; and there' is added a separate strip E upon which the clamp C is slidably mounted. This strip together with the ends of the strips B and A are fastened together by holding clamp C at the end of the impact member.
I claim-- 1. A vehicle bumper comprising two arallel vertically spaced impact members oined at their ends, vertical spacing members intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members, and reinforcing members located behind the impact members and joining the ends thereof and the spacing members.
2. A vehicle bumper comprising two arallel vertically spaced impact members oined at their ends, vertical spacing mem hers intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members, and reinforcing members located behind the impact members and joining the ends thereof and the spacing members, and means adjustable along the reinforcing members for attaching the bumper to the vehicle frame.

A vehicle bumper comprising two parallel vertically spaced impact members joined at their ends, vertical spacing members intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members, and reinforcing menh bers located behind the impact members and joining the ends thereof and the spacing members. the impact members being rear wardly bent -at their ends. the reinforcing members being substantially parallel with the central portion of the impact members.

A vehicle bumper comprising two parallel vertically spaced impact members oined at their ends, vertical spacing members intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members, and reinforcing members located behind the impact members and joining the ends thereof andthe spacing members, and means adjustable along the reinforcing members for attaching the bumper to the vehicle frame, the impact members being rearwardly bent at their ends, the reinforcing members being substantially parallel with the central portion of the impact members.

A vehicle bumper comprising two arallel vertically spaced impact members oined at their ends, vertical spacing members intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members, and reinforcing members located behind the impact members and separately joining the ends thereof and the spacing members, the impact members being rearwardly bent at their ends, the reinforcing members being substantially parallel with the central portion of the impact members, and forwardly bent at their inner ends to engage the spacing members.

A vehicle bumper comprising two parallel vertically spaced impactmembers oined at their ends, vertical spacing members intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members and reinforcing members located behind the impact members and separately joining the ends thereof and the s acing members, and means adjustable a ong the reinforcing members for attaching the bumper to the vehicle frame, the impact members being rearwardly bent at, their ends, the reinforcing members being substantially parallel with the central portion of the impact members and forwardly bent at their inner ends to engage the spacing members.

A vehicle bumper comprising two parallel vertically spaced impact members joined at their ends, vertical spacing members intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members. and reinforcing members located behind the impact members and separately joining the ends thereof and the spacing members, the reinforcing members being in line with the space between the two impact members.

A vehicle bumper comprising two parallel vertically spaced. impact members joined at their ends vertical spacing members intermediate the endspf and joining the impact members and reinforcing members behind the impact members integral with one of said members and attached at their inner ends to the spacing members.
9. A vehicle bumper comprising two arallel vertically spaced impact members oined at their ends, vertical spacing members intermediate the ends of and joining the impact members, and integral reinforcing members bent rearwardly and inwardly.

A vehicle bumper comprising two similar verticallyspaced impact members, the two ends of said members being respectively upwardly and downwardly bent, each of said members terminating at one end where it engages the other and each of them having a rearwardly and inwardly bent reinforcing member.

A vehicle bumper. comprising two similar vertically spaced impact members, the two ends of said members being respectively upwardly and downwardly bent, each of said members terminating at one end where it engages the other and each of them having a rearwardly and inwardly bent reinforcing member, spacing members between said impact members, the reinforcing memhers being attached to said spacing members.

A vehicle bumper comprising two similar vertically spaced impact members, the two ends of said members being respectively upwardly and downwardly bent, each of said members terminating at one end where it engages the other and each of them having a rearwardly and inwardly bent reinforcing member, spacing members between said impact members. the reinforcing members being attached to said spacing members being forwardly bent to engage. the

A vehicle bumper comprising two parallel vertically spaced impact members joined at their ends, rein-forcing members behind the impact members extending inwardly from the ends thereof and attached to each of said impact members intermediate their ends, said reinforcing members being integral with said impact members and bent rearwardly and inwardly therealong, the impact members beinp rearwardly bent at their ends, the reinforcing members being forwardly bent to engage the impact members.

A vehicle bumper cin'nprising two parallel vertically spaced impact members joined at their ends, reinforcing members behind the impact members extending inwardly from the ends thereof and attached to each of said impact members intcrmediate their ends, the reinforcing members being bifurcated at their ends to separately engage the upper and lower impact members. v
