Description
e. A. BAUER. BRUSH CONSTRUCTION.
Pm'wa Feb. 28, 1922 UNYYED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS a. BAUER, or CHICAGO, runners, nssirenon 1T0 rineao MALNUFAGTURING COMPANY, OF WARSAW, INDIANA, A oonrone'rron or INDIANA.
BRUSH CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed March 10, 1921.
To all whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvUs A. BAUER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident -*of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Tmprovement in Brush Constructions,'of which. the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in brush construction, and more specifically to an improved and ellicient means for securing a tuft of bristles within a recess in the brush spindle.
My invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with brushes in which the spindle is made ofmetal or other hard material, and by my invention the attaching means for the tufts of bristles do not project on to the surface of the spindle, so that the spindle is provided with a clear plane surface between the various tufts of bristles, so
that lint or other material will'not collect upon the spindle when the brush is being used.
The features and objects of my invention will be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated my invention in connection with a brush of the type particularly adapted for use in carpet cleaners.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of a brush embodying the features of my invention, one of the tufts of bristles being removed.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of 'a portion of the brush.
As illustrated, the brush consists of a cylindrical spindle at, whichis preferably made of metal, within which is secured a series of tufts of bristles 5. Each of these tufts of bristles are inserted within a cylindrical recess 6 in the spindle t, and are held within this recess by an attaching wire 7. These tufts .of bristles are formed by folding the bristles at their center and the wire 7 is formed with a hook at one end which passes around-the bristles. This attaching wire is provided with an elongated shank 8 which, when the tufted bristles and attaching wire are inserted within the recess 6, projects through the opening 9 which is bored through the spindle 4 to the opposite side Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 451,175.
wire is thus riveted in position, it operates to firmly and securely hold the tufts of bristles in position. l/Vhen a pulling strain is exerted on the bristles, it willtend to straighten the hook portion of the attaching wire and the end 11 will be forced against the side of the recess 6. This engagement will prevent the straightening of this hook portion, and thus prevent the bristles from being pulled out of the recess in the spindle.
It will thus be seen that I have devised a very simple and efficient attaching means for the tufts of bristles which is particularly adapted for use in connection with metallic spindles or spindles made of some other material which is of such hardness that the ordinary staple cannot be driven into the same. Furthermore, by reason of the free uninterrupted surface of the brush spindle, my invention produces a brush which is very eflicient for use in connection with carpet cleaning machines, as no% dustor lint will catch on the brush spindle.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a brush construction, a spindle having a recess therein, a folded tuft of bristles inserted within said recess, an at taching wire for securing said bristles within said recess, said attaching wire being provided with a hooked end portion passing around said bristles, one. end of said hook engaging against the bottom of said recess and adjacent the side wall thereof, the other end of said wire passing through an opening formed, in the bottom of said recess to the opposite side of said spindle, and secured to the spindle, the end of said wire being substantially flush with the surface of said spindle.
2. In a brush construction, a spindle having a recess in one face thereof, a hole ere tending from the bottom of said recess to the opposite surface of said spindle, av tuft the other end of said attaching member of foldedbristles inserted withinsaidrecess, passingtln ouiglnsaid openingvand. being sean attaching member for securing saidtuft cured to the Opposite surface of said 3 within said recess, said member beingprospindle. V
Vided With ahooked end portion passing Signed by me Versaw, Ind, this 1 day around said bristles, the end of said hook o'f'March, 1921.
engaging against the bottom of said recessg GUSTAVUS A. BAUER.
