SCRIP MEASURING DEVICE.

HARRY r. WHITE, or FRESNO, CALIFORNIA.
SGRIP-MEASURING DEVICE.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, HARRY, F. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fresno,.iii the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrip-Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
greater or less number of units correspond-'.
ing to the quantity of the commodity pur chased or other payment to be made in return for service, when the book is presented by the purchaser. In the use of such bookshowever considerable time is consumed and errors are likely to because'd in counting off or calculating the number of units .to be removed. Particularly is this true when the scrip units are designated to indicatesuccessive totals throughout the series for in such case it is necessary fre quently to subtract or add oddamounts in order to determine the location of the unit at which the scrip is to be torn or otherwise detached. Therefore it is the 'prim'ary'obj ect of the present invention to:,pr0vide means for employment iIiJCOIlllBCtiOn with scrip of the character mentioned, for the purpose of measuring 03 the required number of units and thus immediately locating the point at which the scrip is to be torn or'otherwise removed, and without the necessity of arithmetical calculation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be employed either as a separate and independent device, and
used either at the time the scrip is presented by the purchaser, in determining the number of units of scrip to be removed from the book, or by an employee in calculating the number of units embraced in blocks of units of scrip turned in by the company agents.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a scrip book and the device'embodying the invention arranged therein; 7 Figure 2 1s a similar view illustrating the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 21, 1922,
Application filed January 26, 1921. Serial No. 440,061.
a P E T O F CE I manner of using the device in connection with the scrip embraced in the book.
The device embodying-the invention is applicable to scrip in various formsbutisillus- .trated in the drawing as employed in connection with scrip in the form, of-al folded V f strip arrangeld'between coversinbook form, I
and in .tliesaid drawing thenumeral 1 indicatesjone cover leaf and the numeral 2 the other cover leaf, the leaves being connected in any, ordinary manner. is indicatedin I generalby the numeral 3 The scrip which y comprises'a strip which is secured atone end to the inner side ofonev of the cover leaves as for example the leaf 2 and ,which is folded back and forth upon itself at intervals-so as i mensions to permit of its being housed be tween the leaves 1 and-2.- The scrip is as stated above in the fornrof a strip and upon to reduce'it, in its folded condition, to dione face of this strip are printed for eXam- I ple transverse lines .4; which serve-to divide the strip into a number-of units5 each of which in the illustrated embodiment of the invention is printed with numeralsfi which,
when any portionofl'the stripis-tornyoff 4 along any one of the lines 4, will indicate 'or designate the total amount of scrip which has been removedfrom-theboolns Thus in the present instance; scrip: has been removed from the book to thetotal' value. of $61560 .1
that the designation ;6 of the terminalunit of the remaining scrip,- reads $6.805 The values which designate. the units, however,
might bein terms of, for example, liquid.
measure, and the units -n'iightzbe consecuitively numbered, instead of being individually numbered, consecutively for otherwise,
-or merely bearydat'a indicating j-their individual value. Therefore, the drawings are merely to indicate an example of scrip in connection with which the device of the invention may be employed. If, for example,
the scrip illustrated in the drawings should be that issued by a company dealing gasoline and oils and if, in the illustrated condition ticular unit or division 5 at the dividing line i of which the scrip should be severed in order to remove the block of units equivalent to 90. Or, by another method, considering the value of each unit or division to be 59%,
eighteen of the units might be counted off and this block of units removed. As previously stated, however, this method of calculation is time-consuming and subjectto The device embodying the present inven tion is indicated in general by the numeral 7 and comprises a stripS of any suitable material and preferably flexible. For example,
the strip may be made from tracinglinen in which event it would possess the advantage of being practically transparent.- One end of the stripis' secured, as at 9, in any suitable manner within the book as for example to the inner face of 'the'cover leaf 1 and the remaining length'of the strip isfolded back and forth upon itself at suitable intervals 'so'that' as in the case of the scrip it may oc cupy a position wholly withinthe bounds of the cover leaves when the book is closed.
For a portion of its length indicated in general by the numeral 10, the strip 8 is marked offas for example by lines 11 into divisions 12 corresponding, in the spacing of their boundary lines 11, tothe divisions 5 of the scrip, andthe said lines 11 are designated lndlvidua lly by numerals, as at 18, arranged in sequence throughout the 'SGIlQS and, in
theiillustrated example, from 0 to 100 each designation beinggreater by five than the preceding designation throughout the series. Thus, the portion 10 of the strip 8 is of alengthequ'al to the le'ngthof a block of the units 5 equivalent to $1.00, or in other words equivalent to thelength of a block of twenty of said units 5.". -At apoint spaced from the line 11 which is designated by O on the measuring stripS, equivalent'to the lengthf-of the saidportion 10 of the strip,
another line 14 is indicated upon the said stripandmay be designated for example by numerals indicating a value of $1.00, as indicated by the numeral 15, and at correspondinglyspacedintervals other lines are indicated uponthe stripand are given numerical value designations. Thus the strip 8 may be said to have a portion of its length divided 'into units of measurement and another portion into multiples of such units.
In the use of the device and assuming that the same is to be employed in the specific example given above, the line 11 of the measuring strip which is indicated at 13, by v90, is brought into registration with the extremity of the scrip 3, and the portion 10 of the said measuring strip fiat along the scrip 'to bring that one of the lines 11 which is designated by 0 into measuring relation to the face of the scrip whereupon it If the purchase to be made should scrip and line 1& bearing the dollar designation 15 had been brought into registration with one of the lines 4 of the scrip.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The combination with scrip having a series of designated divisions which are to be removed in blocks of selected numbers, of means for application thereto to measure off any selected number of said divisions, said means consisting of a strip having one end portion of. its length divided into unitsequal in length to the divisions of the scrip and the remaining portion of its length divided into multiples of such units, the units being numbered to represent total values inzascending sequence with the unit. of greatest value at the extremity of that end portion of the strip containing the unit divisions and the divisions representing multiplesof the units being numbered in sequence toward the opposite end of thestrip from the unit of lowest value.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature.
