Be it known that i, WILLIAM L., Borel-Inn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bringhurst, in the county of Carrolland State oi indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fence Protectors, or' which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tence protectors and has particular reference to a device adjustably connected to a tence post for supporting a strand of barb wire laterally of the fence construction to. prevent animals from coming in contact with the fence. j

The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of an adjustable bracket secured to a fence post for supporting a strand of barb wire laterally of the fence construction, the bracket including an arm having' the barb wire secured thereto with the arm capable of being shifted to project on either side otl the tence.

A further object of the invention has reference to a. fence protector wherein an arm is adjustably secured to a bracket secured to a tence post with a barb wire attached to the outer end of the arm, the arm being adjustable tov project laterally at opposite sides of the fence ,and further .capable of various angle adjustments, to lie either in a horizontal plane or in inclined planes of different degrees'.

lt is a further object of the invention to provide a tence protector of: the type above set forth with detailed improvements over the construction disclosed in prior patents granted to me on January 29, 1.918, Patent No. 1,25%,653 and August 27, 191,23, Patent No. 1,276,718, the supportingl bracket lor the barb wire supporting arm being of simpliied construction with the wire supporting arm capable of various angular adjustments relative to the bracket as above set forth.

With the above general objects in view, and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

v`Eriely described, the invention aims to provide a :fence protector embodying an arm adjustably mounted on a ience post for supporting a barb wire at the outer end thereoi?,A to be positioned laterally oiE the fence construction to protect the fence `trom cattle attempting to jump the saine, the barb wire holding the cattle at a safe distance from the `tence. mounted on a bracket secured to the post and is capable of swinging ,movement to project laterally at either side of the fence, a wire clip being associated with the bracket and` bracket arm for holding the same in horizontal positions at either side of the fence or in upwardly inclined or perpendicular positions. vrlhe bracket embodies an angle iron secured by a central bolt to a fence post with downwardly converging braces secured at their lower ends to the post to prevent movement of' the angle iron relative to the post. The bracket arm has a slotted openingin the inner end thereof for pivotal mounting upon the bolt for anchoring;` the a nglc iron to the post, the arm being slidable on said bolt, a limited distance, to permit pivotal movement oit the arm on the angle iron so that the same may move to a horizontal position for lateral projection at either side of the post. The brace bars and angle iron are provided with a series of openings while a single opening is formed in the bracket arm adjacent its pivotal mounting, a U-shaped clip having the endsy thereof selectively received in openings in the brace bars, angle iron and bracket arm tor holding the bracket arm either in horizontal positions, and inclined or perpendicu-` laiT positions.

Describing the invention more in detail there is illustrated a fence post l that may be formed oi either metal, concrete or wood having usual `fence wires 2 secured thereto by fasteners 3, the Vtence posts being placed The bracket arm is pivotally the desired distance apart with the usual number ot strands ot fence Wire 2 secured thereto. f

The ience protector' embodies a bracket formed ot an angle iron horizontally positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the flange 4i oi the angle iron being secured to the post 1 by the bolt 5, shown more clearly in Fig. 8, while the flange G of the angle iron projects at right angles to the l'lange l and is directed outwardly ot' the post 1. A4 pair ot downwardly converging brace bars 7 are offset, or otherwise secured as at 8 to the fia-nge 1 of the angle iron with their lower meeting` ends secured to the fence post 1 by the bolt 9. The flange l ot the angle iron is provided with a plurality ot spaced openings 10 while spaced openings 11 are formed in the brace bars 7, for purposes presently to appear.

A relatively long bracket arm 12 is provided at its inner end with an elongated slot 13 for pivotal mounting on the bolt 5 that secures the angle iron ot the bracket to the post 1, the outer end ot the arm 12 being provided with a slotted opening 14 while a terminal notch 15 is cut in the outer end oi the arm. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a strand of barb wire 16 extends through the end notch 15 ot the bracket arm and is anchored therein by the binding clip 17.

A Ushaped clip 18 is associated With the bracket and bracket arm for holding the same in a fixed position, one of the ends 18 of the U-shaped clip being selectively received in the bracket openings 10 and 11 with the other end thereof entering an opening 12 in the arm 12, adjacent the pivoting slot 13.

When the bracket arm 12 is in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1, said arm is moved on said bolt 5 to prevent upward tilting of the arm with the lower side of the arm supported in the liange 6 of the angle iron, and when so positioned, the opening .12 in the arm will register with the outer opening 10 in the angle iron. one end 18 of the clip 18 heilig received in said registering openings while the other end thereoi is received in an opening in the adjacent brace bar 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, thereby rigidly anchoring` the arm 12 against movement relative to the supporting bracket. In this position ot thearm, the barb wire 16 projects a considerable distance to one side of the ience 2 and will eiiectively protect the fence from cattle confined therein, the lateral disposition of the barb Wire preventing cattle trom coming in close range of the fence and also preventing the cattle from jumping over the fence. Should it be desired to project the'bracket arm 12 from the opposite side of the fence as illustrated by dotted lines in F 2, the clip 18 is detached :from the bracket and arm and the arm moved until the bolt 5 is received in the outer end of the slot 13, at which time the arm Will be free to swing to the opposite side oit the fence, and there retained in the same manner as illustrated by full lines in Fig. 1. With this adjustment it is also possible to elevate the arm 12 at an inclination by placing the clip 18 in desired openings 11 ot the brace bar 7 or the openings 10 in the'angle iron 4 With the other end of the clip received in the opening 12 of the bracket arm. Further, should it be desired to increase the height of the fence the arm 5 may be shifted to the perpendicular position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 with the clip 18 received in the inner openings 10 of the angle iron and the openings 12 of the bracket arm. With this mounting of the bracket arm on the bracket various adjustments thereof are capable of attainment as will at once be obvious, the bracket being of extremely simple constructionginexpensive' to manufacture, and embodying comparatively few parts that are practically safe from injury.

A fence protector comprising a bracket formed of an angle iron, a bolt securing the Y angle iron to a post, brace bars carried bv the angle iron and secured to the post, a bracket arm pivotally mounted on said bolt and resting upon one flange of the angle iron When in a horizontal position, a barb wire secured to the outer end ot' said. arm, said pivotal mounting ot the arm including a slot in the arm to permit the arm to be moved in one direction to prevent pivotal movement thereof and to be moved in the opposite direction to permit the arm to swing from one side of the fence post to the other side thereof, said angle iron and brace bars having a series of openings there- 1n, there being an opening in said bracket arm, and a clip selectively positioned in said openings for holding the'bracket arm in adjusted positions.
