IMPROVEMENT IN GEARINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,690, dated July 8, 1873; application filed June 5, 1873.

Beit known that I, FRANK EMMERICH, of the city, county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Gearing, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a face view, partly in section, of my improved gearing. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to produce a new gearing, by which a continuous bearing of the teeth of one wheel upon those of the other can be obtained, and all back-lash or loss ot' motion during reversing avoided.
This invention consists in making each Wheel of two or more toothed disks, whose teeth are constructed on the same pitch-1ine, but with ditlerent pitches, so that where two or more such disks of two gear-wheels mesh into each other, not only the continuous bearing is obtained, but also all loss of motion or back-lash during reversion avoided. In fact,
` under this construction, two disks for each wheel will be fully as effective as three or more when constructed on the principles of ordinary step-gearin g.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents one and B the other of two shafts to be connected by gearing. Upon the shaft A is mounted the gear-wheel C, and upon the shaft B the pinion or gear-wheel D. The
wheel C is composed of two toothed disks or gear-wheels, a and b, and the wheel or pinion D of two toothed disks or gear-wheels d and e, as shown in Fig 2, the said disks being s0 placed that a gears into d and b into e. The pitch-lines of the wheels a b are alike, as are also those of d c, but the pitches of the teeth a b vary, and so do those of the wheels d e. This makes the teeth of a differ in size and number from those formed on the wheel b, and consequently also an equal variation exists between the teeth of d and e. The varying size, thickness, and number of teeth produces such a disposal of contact surfaces that continuous bearings will be obtained when these wheels are in gear, and all back-lash prevented, as aforementioned. The disks a and b may be connected by a set-screw, f, passing through a slot of one of the disks, so that they may be properly adjusted with reference to the disposal of their teeth whenever necessary.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The gear-wheels C D, constructed each of two or more toothed disks, the teeth of each pair being formed on the same pitch-line, but
with different pitches, substantially as described.
