GRADING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
Application filed January 12, 1920. Serial No. 350,952.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. MCCAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grading Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This grading machine is so designed as to make available steam shovels as ordinarily constructed. It is designed to give a wide range of operation especially w1th relation to shallow grading such as is encountered in ordinary road .work and in renewing pavements.
The invention is illustrated in the accomshovel construction.
An auxiliary boom 11 preferably in the form of an I-beam is secured to a bracket 12 and the bracket 12 is pivotally mounted on a pin 13 which pin preferabl also forms a pivotal mountin or the 00m 5. The bracket 12 ex'ten s outwardly far enough to permit the swinging of the platform 4 with relation to the frame and parts of the machine. A dipper 14 is carried by hangers 15 which are provided with the wheels 16 mounted between the flanges 17 of the I- beam or boom 11. The dipper is provided with the usual oints l8 and has a-swinging bottom 19 which is preferably tripped from the rear of the dip er.
A driving or pull-out line 20is operated from the drum 21 on the platform and extends from a sheave 22 on the main boom 5 around a sheave 23 on the auxiliary boom,
over a sheave 24 at the outer end of the auxwith the parts as shown in the drawing the boom 11 is swung to the portion of the work desired to be operated upon by swinging the platform in the usual manner of steam shovels. The dipper is driven into the work by the pull-out line 20 which forces the dipper along the boom 11. The boom and In consequence the dipper is held to its work through the, action of the dipper stick and' the crowding engine 7. When the dipper is filled it is carried to the end of the auxillary boom 11 and the auxiliary boom is lifted through the action of the dipper stick and the dipper swung .over the wagon or "other receptacle and dumped by dropping the bottom 19. The dipper is then permitted to run back on the boom by gravity and the auxiliary boom is lowered to the horizontal position and swung to the position of the work and the operation is re eated.
It will be noted that] this construction while giving a practically direct thrust to the dipper through the horizontal posit-ioning of the boom also permits of a setting and holding of the auxiliary boom to the work by means of the dipper stick. Further it makes applicable the ordinary steam shovel with very little change so that it forms merely an attachment for a steam shovel and it also provides a mechanism which operates in a manner so nearly analogous to the ordinary steam shovel that an operator familiar w1th steam shovel practice has no difficulty in immediately operating the grader soformed. a
What I claim as new is 1. In a grading machine, the combination of a platform; a boom pivotally mounted upon the platform and extending from the platform; a dipper having a cutting edge directed away from the platform and movable along the boom; a. dipper stick actuating the boom to raise and lower the outer end of the boom; a crowding engine operating on the dipper stick; a mounting for the crowding engine; a drum on the platform; and a line extending from the drum to the dipper for actuating the dipper alon the boom.
2. In a grading machine, the combination of a platform; a boom pivotally mounted upon the platform and extending from the platform; a dipper havin a cutting edgedirected away from the p atform an movable'alon the boom; a dipper stick actuating the com to raise and. lower the lot outer end of the boom; a crowding engine operating on the dipper stick; a mounting for the crowding engine; a drum on the platform; and a line extending from the drum to the dipper by way of the end of the boom.
3.-In a grading machine, the combination of a swinging platform; a boom ivotally mounted upon the platform an extending from the platform; a dipper having a cuttin edge directed away from the platform an movable along the boom; a dip er stick actuating the boom to raise and lower the outer end of the boom; 3. crowding engine operating on the dipper stick; a mounting for the cro'wding engine;
a drum on the platform; and a line extending from the drum to the dipper for actuatmg the dipper along the boom.
4. In a grading machine, the combination of a platform; a main boom extending from the platform; an auxiliary boom mounted below the main boom; a dipper 'movablealong the auxiliary boom; a drum on the platform; a line extending from the drum to the dipper; a dipper stick mounted on the main boom andsecured to the auxiliary boom; and a crowding engine mounted on the main boom and acting on the dipper stick. Y
5. In a grading machine, the combination of a platform; a main boom extending from the latform; an auxiliary boom mounted be ow the main boom; a dipper iary'boom; and a crowding engine mounted on themain boom and acting on the dipper stick.
6. In a grading machine, the combination of a swinging platform; a main boom extending from the platform; an auxiliary boom mounted below the main boom; a dipper'movable along the auxiliary boom;
a drum on the platform; a line extending y from the drum to the dipper; a dipper stick mounted on the main boom and secured to the auxiliary boom; and a crowding engine mounted on the main boom and acting on the dipper stick. 5
' 7. In a grading machine, the combination of a platform; a main boom extending from the platform; an auxiliary boom mounted below the main boom; a di per movable along the auxiliary boom; a rum on the platform; a line extending from the drum to the dipper; a dipperv stick mounted on the main boom and secured to the auxiliary boom; a crowding engine mounted on the main boom and acting onthe dipper stick; and pivotal mountings for said booms, said mountings being adjacent.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. WILLIAM E. MCCAIN.
