Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 26, 1921. Serial No. 487,814.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be itknown that I, WILLIAM D. ANTRIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, county'of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relatesto gas heaters or radiators and particularly to the type known as radiant heaters. Z
An object of my-invention is to provide a heater with a plurality of heating units freely communicating at the top with a common header.-
K further object of my invention is such a heater wherein the header is used for igniting purposes and is composed-of sections shown in Figure 2; and
carried by the heating units.
Further objectswill be apparent froma reading of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

. Referring to the drawings, the heater may be of any usual construction, having a base 1 of any suitable material, provided with legs 2 at the corners. The base plate 1 is preferably formed so as to afford a chamber adjacent the bottom of the ,heater for the reception of a plurality of Bunsen tubes 3.
These tubes are fed from the supply line 4, controlled by a valve 5. Each of the tubes 3 feeds a heating unit 6. The units 6 are preferably of some suitable refractory material and areprovided with a plurality of openings 7. At the upper end of each of the elements'is a section 8 which runs along an axis at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the elements so that when the elements are in vertical position, as shown, the sections 8 are horizontal. The sections 8 are in freecommunication with the interior of the elements 6 and are arranged so that p when the elements are set in the position There are two types of radiant heaters, one in which the radiants set close together, and another type in which the radiants are spaced apart at considerable distance The latter type is shown in Figure 1 and the sect-ions 8 of the header are of suflicient length, to permit of the spacing of the ele- .beyond the body-section. The unit shown in Figure 4, however, is provided at its ends 9 w1th an opening which communicates with a similar section on the adjacent units when assembled, thus forming a. continuous sectional header with units touching each other.
The function of the header, whether of the type shown in Figure 1, or that produced by assembling of a plurality of units -like that shown in Figure 4, is to afford a 'ready means of simultaneously igniting all of the burner elements from a common source such as a pyrophoric or other lighting device 10. a

The arrangement above described has many advantages resulting from the construction and arrangement shown, residing principally in the fact that the header sections are integral with the heating "units and the header is thus provided upon the assembly of the units of the type shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, or that shown in Figure 4.
Many other advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Many changes may be made in the details of construction of the heater'and also in the units without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A heater of the class described comprising a casing, a supply line, a plurality of independent heating elements supplied from said line, and means by which said elements are ignited comprising a sectional header, each section being carried by one of said elements.
'2. A heater of the class described comprising a casing, a supply line, a plurality of independent heating elements supplied from said line, and means by which said elements may be ignited comprising a horizontal header and composedbof registering sections, each section being carried by one of said elements.
3. A heater of the class described com- I prising a casing, a supply line, a plurality vertical heating of independent vertical heating elements supplied from said line, and spaced apart from each other and an igniting header for said elements ,composed of a plurality of communicating zontal and carried by one of said elements.
4. In a heater of the class described, the combination of a supply line, a plurality of elements supplied from said line, a horizontal igniting header at at the top of said elements tegral sections each being horithe top of said elements, said header being composed of communicating sections carried by said elements.
5. In a heater of the class described, the combination of a casing, a supply line, 'a plurality of heating elements operatively connected with said supply line and held in position in said casing and an igniting header for said elements carried by said elements.
6. In a heater of the class described, the combination of a casing, a supply line, a plurality of heating elements operatively connected with said'supply lineand held in position in said casing'and an igniting header for said elements comprising an in- 7. In a heater of the class described, the combination of a casing, a supply line,a plurality of heating elements supplied by said supply line and held in position in said casing, said elements each having an interior chamber and communicating passages at the upper portion of said elements whereby an igniting header common to said elements is produced.
