Description
w. M. THOMPSON &1. L. MAHURIN.
Reciprocating Churns.
No.140,445, Patentedluly1,l873.
Wimessesf I Inve or: Per/ g AM. PHOTO-LITHOBRAPH/L 00 w (mama's P/eoasw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM M. THOMPSON AND JOHN L. MAHURIN, OF ROOKFIELD, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECIPROCATING CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,445, dated July 1, 1873; application filed March 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM M. THOMP- SON and JOHN L. MAHURIN, of Rockfield, in the county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Churn, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of our churn on line 0 c, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan view, partly in section, showing the upper part of the dasher; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the dashers.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention consists in the arrangement of perforated dashers, sliding in grooves Within theehurn, which are moved and operated against by similar perforated da-shers fixed to a plunger-rod passing through the sliding lid, which prevents the splashing of the cream.
In the drawing, A represents the churn, of suitable material. Two vertical grooves, a, at opposite sides of the churn-body, guide the sliding pieces I), to which one set of horizontal dashers, d, is applied. Dashers d are perforated by a suitable number of round holes, 0, and a central aperture to allow the plungerrod f to move freely therein. Another set of dashers, d, with corresponding perforations, e, are firmly fixed to plunger-rod f. A movable lid, 13, covers the top of churn A, fitting into the projecting rim 9 of the tub and having a central aperture for the passage of the plunger-rod. Lid B may be raised by button h for the admission of the cream. The upper end of plunger-rod f is pivoted to lever O, which is again pivoted at i to a brace, D, applied rigidly, by screws or otherwise, to the outside of churn A. The extension of lever O is used as a handle to operate the dashers d and d. The motion of the gliding dashers cl against the rod dashers d acts on the cream in the manner of a press, and produces the full percentage of butter. No soiling of the floor by the splashing over of the lid is possible, and the simplicity of the different parts makes the churn durable and economical.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The four parallel perforated dashers d d and d d, the former moving with bar f and the latter surrounding said barf but moving only with the guide-bars b b, as and for the purpose described.
