Description
v. BOSCATO. AUTOMATIC STARTING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV- 3,1921.

VITTORIO BOSCATO, OF DIANO MARINA, ITALY.
AUTOMATIC STARTING DEVICE.
Application filed November 3, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vrrronlo Bosoaro, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Diano Marina, Italy, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements in Automatic Starting Devices, (for which I have filed an application in Italy, July 21, 1920,) of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an automatic starting device specially adapted for motor cars and the like, the object being to replace the troublesome use of the starting handle as well as of the pressure liquid starting devices which have certain disadvantages in actual practice.
The annexed drawing shows by way of example one method of carrying the invention into effect.
Fig. 1 is a plan view partly in section.
Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in section.
a is the shaft of a pedal or of a hand lever designated b-. This lever has an arm b from the end of which is suspended a link cwhose other end is pivotally attached to an oscillatable toothed segment 01. The toothed segment d is rotatably secured to the frame e and is subjected to the action of a spring flikewise secured to the frame.
On the motor shaft --ga free motion disc is mounted and around this a toothed wheel h is arranged, the wheel being adapted to be engaged by the toothed segment -d.
The working of the device is as follows:
By depressing the pedal, b the toothed segment d is brought into mesh w1th the toothed wheel 7L and the latter rotates an amount corresponding to the toothed arc of the segment. By so doing, the spring fis put under tension. The motor shaft g, however, is not affected owing to the free motion arrangement. When the pedal is released, the spring f brings the segment d back into the disengagement position in which it is shown in Fig. 2. The

toothed wheel h revolves the free motion disc along with it. The motor shaft g will accordingly be revolved also and compression will take place in the cylinder. By connecting up in any suitable manner to the lgnition gear provided with a convenient tripping device in order to obtain a suitable revolving speed of the magneto shaft, the springing of a spark is obtained and the motor shaft will then turn on for its own account, whereas the toothed wheel h will remain loose and at rest.
Having now described my invention and how the same is to be carried out, what I claim as my invention is:
The combination with an engine shaft, of a gear wheel surrounding the same, a ratchet mechanism arranged between said shaft and wheel and adapted to drive the shaft with the wheel when the wheel is moved in one direction and to permit movement of the wheel independently of the shaft when the wheel is moved in the opposite direction, an oscillating toothed segment normally disconnected .from said wheel and adapted to rotate the wheel when the teeth of the segment are moved into a position to mesh with the teeth of the wheel, a second shaft arranged perpendicularly to the axis of the engine shaft, a bell-crank lever pivotally mounted on the second shaft, a link connecting one arm of said bell-crank lever to said segment for causing the segment to move the wheel in the direction in which the wheel moves independently of the engine shaft, a frame carrying said segment, and a coil tension spring having one of its ends connected to said segment'and its other end connected to said frame, said sprin being arranged to be stretched when the bell-crank lever is actuated by the operator and to contract when movement of the segment in a direction to drive the wheel and shaft together.
