To all whom it may concern.-
lBe it known that l, ERNEST A. S'runas, a citizen of Canada, and a resident of Smithers, Province of British Columbia, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Evaporative Refrigerator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to refrigerators, and more particularly to an improved cooler adapted to receive and contaln perishable foo stuff, and preserve th same for aconsiderable length of time While the contents is beingshipped. I
Une of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved cooler of this character that ma be employed for shipping purposes and by ouseholders having small quantities of food stud to be kept for a short period of time during hot weather.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cooler of this character adapted to be employed for preserving perishable food without the use of ice, the container being constructed to exclude the natural heat of the atmosphere, and preserve the ame from contact with the air.
Further objects of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the 2-2 of Fig. 1.
following detailed description of the invention and of the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section on the line Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention and 'in which like characters of reference indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, a cylindrical storage tank 1 is constructed of watertight material preferably of thin metal and is enclosed at one end bye bottom wall while its opposite end is open. This storage tank 1 is enclosed and embraced by a basket 2 which, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, is constructed of laminated strips closely interwoven and shaped to conform to the shape of the storage tank 1. An outer re taining basket 3, of considerably greater diameter is constructed in the same manner Specification of letters Patent.

and receives the inner basket and the storage tank to provide an interior space in which cool water may be placed when the device is used. The top of the outer basket 3: is of frusto-conical formation and its upper marginal edge is joined to the upper marginal edge of the inner basket 2. The inner and outer baskets, while both are constructed of the laminated strips, will maintain the tank in properly spaced relation at the center of the cooler and water will be permitted to pass between the strips and enter the space surrounding the inner basket.
A. water retaining porous bag 4 receives the outer basket 3 and is constructed of canvas or similar fabric for the purpose of containing water and permitting evaporation when the wind or air circulates about the bag, the evaporation of the water causing absorption of heat from the interior of the bag. The outer basket 3 fits snugly within the bag 4 and the top of the bag is of frusto-conical formation to fit the frustoconic al top of the outer basket 3. An inlet open ng for filling the bag with water is provided by mounting a short-neck 5 near the top of the bag and this may be closed by a cap 6 fastened in any preferred manner. Near the upper edge of the outer basket 3, at diametrically opposite points, are the loops 7 to which a handle or bail 8 is attached for carrying the cooler. The top of the storage tank is provided with a removable cover 9 provided with an annular flange 10 adapted tofit the top of the storage tank to exclude air and moisture from the tank.
When in use, the perishable food stuff will be stored in the tank 1 and water-will be poured into the bag through the neck 6 thus filling the space between the inner and outer baskets. The baskets, as stated, are constructed from laminated strips and these strips are preferably of thin metal so that they will readily transmit heat. These strips may be copper plated, if desired, for the purpose of preventing rust. The bottom of the inner basket is spaced above the bottom of the. outer basket, thus permitting a circulation of water beneath the tank so that the entire area of the tank is exposed to the cooling action of the water.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that a very simple and durable cooler has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred r rm, l desire, to be under= stood, that slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the sctipe of the claims hereunto appended:
claim;
1. An evaporative refrigerator comprising an inner storage tank, a basket enveloping said tank, a second basket enveloping the first named basket and being spaced therefrom on all sides and on the bottom to provide a liquid space between said baskets and conical and having its upper end meeting with the upper end of said inner basket, and a water-retaining porous bag fitted about eoaraa said outer basket and having its upper end also, formed substantially conical to fit snugly over the conical end of said outer basket.
3. An evaporative refrigerator comprising a cylindrical metallic'storage tank for holding perishable articles having its bottom closed and its top open, a flanged closure for the open top of said tank, a basket enveloping the sides and bottom of said tank and tight embracing the same, said basket being ma e up of thin flat strips of metal interwoven, an outer basket surrounding said inner basket and spaced annularly therefrom on the sides and also spaced from the bottom thereof to provide a chamber enveloping the sides and bottom of said tank for containing liquid, said outer basket being also made up of interwoven thin flat strips of metal, a liquid retaining porous bag fitted about said outer basket, means whereby the chamber between said baskets may be .filled with liquid, and a supporting means for said refrigerator.
