EXPANDING FILING POCKET.
incsnvo.
To all whom it may concern:
Be known that I, ALVAH BUSHNELL, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in EX- panding Filing Pockets, of which the fol-1 lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in filing wallets or cases, expanding envelopes, paperpockets and the like, and has for its object to provide an expansible wallet, filing case or pocket with end flaps or wings secured to one of the sides to permit expansion of the wallet or case.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide in a device of the characterstated flexible end flaps or wings carried by a side wall and slida-bly registering with a chamber or pocket in the other side wall,'said end flaps or wings having non-flexible ends to prevent their accidental withdrawal from the pocket or chamber. 7 i
A further object of the invention is to stiffen the end flaps or wings throughout the major portion of their lengthat their inner ends to prevent accidentalwithdrawal from the pocket in which they are inserted and to strengthen the upper edges of said flaps; and also to provide locking means to prevent the withdrawal of the flapsor wings from the pocket or chamber With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the. art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in
Fig. 1, is a fragmentary perspective view of a filing case or expanding wallet in a relatively closed position embodying 'my improvements, a portion of the end flap being broken away to plainly illustratethe construction.
Fig. 2, is a similar view showing it open or expanded. g

to illustrate my improved device for locking the ends of the flaps or wings together while allowing a limited sliding movement therebetween.
Fig. 5, is a section onthe line 55 of Fig. i
Fig. 7, is a fragmentary perspective view on a reduced scale of an expanding filing case or wallet in a relatively closed position showing a slightly difierent construction or formation of pocket and end wings.
Fig. 8, is a similarview of another form of end wing. a
Fig. 9, is a vertical sectional view illustrating another formation of pocket. Fig. 10, is a like view of another formation. Fig. 11, is a similar view of afurther formation. a 1
Fig. 12, is a similar view illustrating still another construction of pocket.
Fig. 13, is a vertical section of a wallet showing a different formation of pocket,
Fig. 154., is. a similar view of avariation of the lastirconstruction.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 and 3 represent thetwo sides or side walls of a filing case or Wallet or similarideviee, the side 2 generally being the back and the side 3 the front. These sides are connected by an inwardly, foldable or bellows bottom having bend or crease permit expanding v and collapsing thereof. a 1
I One of the sides as 2, is provided with end .fla s or wings 6, the free ends of which" sli ably or adustably engagethe other side 3, said side preferably being provided with from one side to the other when the filing;
case is fully expanded, while the free ends which slide within the pocket are stifi and these stiffened ends should be longer. than pockets, but if found desirable openings 13 i a this the flexible portions to prevent their accidental withdrawal from the pocket so that the major portions of said end flaps or wings are stiff. r
In actual practice the side 2 which is used as the back is made oftwo thicknesses of material 8 and 9 between which the end flaps or wings 6 are secured while the side 3 which become the front is made of two thicknesses of material 10 and 11 throughout a portion of its height only one of said thicknesses of materialextending from the bottom to a point intermediate the upper and lower edges of the side 3 leaving the upper portion of the side 3 of single thick-' ness to form a flexible flap 12 which. may
be easily and readily bent forward for-in sertion ofpap'ers of other articles'in the filing case. The two sheets or thicknesses of material 10 and 11 are not attached to each other for a distance equal to the heightor width of the end flaps or wings so as to form the pocket 7 in which said end flaps slide. V
' The end flaps or wings 6 may be moved in and out of the pocket by inserting the thumbs or-"fingers'in the open ends of-the may be formed in the other sheet or thickness of' material 11 of the side 3, one adjacent each end so that the thumbs or fingers may be pressed against the end flaps or wings to move them in either direction and may be readily accomplished if the thumbs or fingers are dampened slightly.
The free or sliding ends of the end flaps or wings'6 are stiffened by attaching thereto an additional sheet of thickness of material lfl which'should extend throughout the majorportion of their length to prevent them being accidentally withdrawn when in use. The edges of the end flaps or wings 6, particularly the upper edges may be strengthened by folding a portion .of the material upon itself along the upperedges of said end'fiaps asindicated by the refer ence numeral 15, Fig. 3. By constructing the end flaps in this manner the likelihood of their beingtorn-in the filing caseis reduced to a minimum. a o
In the construction shown 111 Fig; 6 the end of one of the flaps 6 has'a tongue 16 formed therewith terminating in a locking end 17 while the end of theopposite flap has a slot 18' formed therein and adapted to receive and permitthe sliding therein of the tongue 16. The tongue is inserted in this slot by folding in the projecting portions of the. head, afterwards by turning these ends back to their original positions 'the tongue will be prevented from withdrawal from the slot, thus limiting the. movement of the flaps 6 and preventing their withdrawal from the pocket or chamber 7 as will be readily understood.
made of single ply material withthe side wings 6 formed as an integral part of the side wall 2, and if found desirable may be provided with the stiffening material here inbefore referred to, but which is not absolutely essential and in this form the pocket 7 is produced by superimposing a sheet of material 25 on the outside of the side wall 3 and securing the former to the latter along two of its opposed edges such as'the top and bottom edges as indicated at'26, the ends of said superimposed sheet between these edges being free to form openings for the insertion of the ends of the wings 6 in the pocket.
In Fig. 8, I have shown the side walls 23 with the bellows bottom formed from a singlerthiokness of material with the pocket produced as in Fig. 7, while in this case the side wings 6 are formed from separate stripsof material attached to the side wall Eat the ends thereof.
In Fig. 9, I have shown the side wall i3 of less height than in the other forms of my 7 invention and utilizing an additional side wall 3 to which the side wall 43 is secured at a point along its lower edge as at 37 and along its upper edge as at 28, the portions between such points being free.
In Fig. 10. I have shown a similar con- ,structiori with the addition of a strengthening' strip 29 secured to the side walliw' and to theupper edge ofthe side wall 4-3 so as to further strengthen the point of attachment ofthe upper edge of the wall 43 to said wall 3*. v
Fig. 11, illustrates thesame construction as 'inFig. 10 with the addition of anext'ension 30 of the wall 3 folded over and secured to a portion of the bellows bottom. 7
is folded on itself 'asat 3l and attached to thevwall 3 whi1e the lower edge of-the latter wall is folded over upon itselfas at 32 and attached to the wall 53.
' In Fig. 12, the upper edge of the wall 53 I The construction'shown in Fig. 13 has the pocket 7 formed between the side wall 63 and the coacting wall 3 with the latter folded over and secured to the bellows fold or bottom 4 as in Fig. 11,-but the upperedge of the side 63 is free from the wall 3 so that access may he had to the pocket from the inside of the wallet and is normally closed by a flap 33 secured to the inside of the wall 3 which hangs down over the side 63. This flap also prevents papers or articles from entering the pocket when being placed in the insertion of the free end of the flap 83,
which will eliminate any projecting ends within the wallet compartment.
It is to be understood that the different constructions here illustrated and described are interchangeable so that the difi'erent pocket formations can be used with any one of the different forms of side wings and the latter may or may not be provided with interlocking devices and stiilening elements.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit ot my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. A filing case including sides one of which is provided with a pocket, endfiaps or wings carried by one of the sides and having nonfiexible ends slidably mounted in the pocket.
2. A filing case or wallet including sides,
one of which is provided with a pocket open at both ends and having openings communicating with said pocket, end flaps or wings carried by one of said sides entering the pocket through the open ends, said end flaps having stiff ends to prevent their accidental withdrawal from the pocket.
3. A filing case or wallet-including sides, one of which is provided with a pocket end flaps or wings carried by one of the sides the ends of said flaps projecting into said pocket, and means for securing said ends together so as to permit a limited sliding movement thereof.
4:. In a filing case including sides, one of which is provided with a pocket, end flaps of wings carried by one of 'the sides and having their ends adapted to form a slip joint received in said pocket for securing the ends together while allowing a limited sliding movement thereof.
5. A filing case including sides, one of which is provided with a pocket, flaps car'- ried by the other of the sides, the ends of said flaps projecting into said pocket, a tongue and locking head formed upon one or said flaps adapted to engage the end of the opposite flap so as to have a limited movement therein.
6. A filing case including sides one of which is provided with a pocket and end flaps or wings carried by the other side with the free ends slidably mounted in the pocket.
7. A filing case including sides connected with an expansible bellows fold and end wings carried by one of the sides and registeging with a pocket carried by the. other s1 e.
8. A filing case including sides one of which is provided with a pocket, a bellows fold connecting said sides and end flaps or wings carried by one of said sides slidably mounted in the pocket.
9. A filing case including single ply sides,
one of which is provided with a pocket,
