T 0 all 1071 0772 it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY M. BonINn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Railway Tie, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway ties that are divided into two parts, supporting the rails by lugs attached thereto, and the object of my invention is to provide a tie that can not slide sideways, and may be so used as to cover the entire center of the track. A further object is to provide a tie that can be removed and replaced without using spikes or maul.
I attain these object by constructing the tie in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure-1 is a perspective of one of my improved railway ties. Figure 2 is a bottom View. of one ofthe ties. Figure 3 is a View of the tie shown with the two parts separated. Figure 4 is a cross section of my improved tie.
Similar letters designate similar parts in the different views of the drawings.
In Figure 1, each A designates a lug for holding the rail, B and B designate the two parts of the tie.
In Figure 2, the under side of the tie has a ridge extending along the tie, the two tie members being each provided with a downward projecting flange which flanges constitute the ridges of the description, designated by C. The cross plates on the ends of one part of the tie, are designated by E, E, which are intended to be cast integral with the body, but may be held in place by any practical means. In Figure 3 the ridge is divided into two parts C. In Figure 4 the center ballast ridge of the tie is designated by C, C.
In assembling these ties they are placed on the rails close-up and keyed in place, covering the road bed for the entire length of the rails. The ridge along the center of the ties will prevent the ties from slipping laterally, road bed clean and free from weeds.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent is 1. A railroad tie consisting of two parts, one of the parts fitting in between the ends of the opposite part, with opposite lugs on the two parts of the tie adapted to hold a rail, and a longitudinal ridge on each part on the underside of the tie, substantially as shown.
2. In a railroad tie, the combination of a part of a tie with both ends extending laterally in the same direction, with rail engaging lugs on its upper side extending in the same direction, and a ridge along the undcr side, with another part adapted to fit between the ends of the opposite part, having rail engaging lugs extending in opposite direction to the lugs on the opposite part, and a longitudinal ridge on its under side, substantially as shown.
