This invention relate to carriage-control mechanism, and particularly to dreimal taliulating, margin gage, hell-rin ring.r and linclocking devices adapted to bc disposed at the front of a typewriting machine.
The invention has` for nn object to provide a nove-l and improved construction of decimal tabulator in which the talullating stops are mountednpon a carriage to cooperate with a rack thereon and to engage selec tivelvr projected ahntments disposed npo'n u support at the. front oi' the typewriter frame and adapted to he actuated hy adjacent key devices ha ving lever connections therewith.
A furthe-r object of the invention is to present a novel construction of tahulator abutment and actuating;r key connection therefor lwhich permits thc close assemblage of the tahnlator disks and the disposition of the kebl upon the front o'l the typewriter facing the operator.
Another object of the. invention is to pro vide an improved structure of carriage release. compris-infr a sleeve having an arm disposed to he engaged hy a shoulder n )on each of the talmlator disks and tensioned to effect the retraction of said disks when prassnre is relieved from the key.
Other and further objects and advantages ot' the invention will he hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined hy the up )ended claims.

The abutment disks 1T yand iii' are. suhstantially similar in construction, each heing provided with an en 'aging point 21 adapted to 'ne thrown into tile path of a stop 22 carried by the carriage and provided upon one face with a restoringr shoulder 23 and at its tail portion with a curved socket 24.
This socket receives the curved head 25 of the actuating lever 26, mounted to oscillateupon the supporting rod 27, carried by hearings 35 from the frame of the machine. The tails 2S of these levers are. deflected laterally as at 29 in Fig. 1-, so as to permit a. close nesting of the leversl adjacent the ahntments and the disposition of the tails thereof in n. single horizont-a1 plane al; sepa-rated points to permit the application and attachment of the keys 30. These keys comprise plnngers 31, from which curved connectors 32 extend and are provided with pins 33 seated in slots 34- in the tails 28 of the actuating levers. By this arrangement the keys ma)v he disposed'in parallel linesy and the collar rocked to actuate -a carriageV release mechanism. This may be accomplished through any desired connection, a preferable form thereof being a crank arm 41 u on the collar 36, from which a depending link 42 extends to a lever 43 ivotally mounted at 44 upon a fixed 1part o the machine and having a pin and s ot connec tion 45 with n bellcranl: clvice 46 pivoted at 47 upon bracket 48. This bell-crank is connected with a member 49 of the carriage escapement mechanism 50, for the release thereof.
The labutment members as just described cooperate with tabulnting stops 22 which are slidingly mounted upon n rocll carried by the arms 52 of the carriage frame andcomprise nrallcl side walls 53 extended beneath a rac -54 and adapted to engage in the teeth 55 thereof. The stops are normally retained in such engagement by means of a Spring 56 secured to the stop and bearing against the rear face of the rack whiie theb may be withdrawn therefrom by a forwar movement u'pon thel finger-piece 57 of the stop which places the s ring 56 under ten- 'While both of t e walls 53 seat in the rack teeth, only one thereof acts as a contact with the abutments, and the parallel arrangement is designed to give additional resistance to`l the impact or thrust blow of the tabulating action. The stops are also provided with an indicator linger 58, whi cooperates with indications 59 upon the upper face of the rack, which are thus clearly visible to the operator. It will be seen that the construction of the tabulator stop permits its ready adjustment to the desired position upon the rack'and its firm connection therewith.
The rod or support 14 also carries a collar 60 which forms a unit for the margin abutment, bell-rin 'ng and line-lock connections. The en( ,of this collar next the tabulator abutment 18 is provided with a pivoting slot 61 to receive the ivots 62. of the margin abutment 68, whir is of yoke shape to partially embrace the collar, and carries a contact point 64. The margin abutment is also provided with a laterally extending arm 65, which supports a curved ring. 66 restin upon the upper face of t e collar. supports the margin abutment in operative position and receives the impact thereof upon contact with the carriage stop 74 in the travel of. the carriage toward the right. For the pur ose of rocking the margin abutment 63, t e collar is provided with a flange 68 having at one face a contact 69 disposed above a margin release lever 70. This lever is substantially similar in construction tothe actuating levers 26, and is rovided with a collar 71 which carries at its opposite end the defiected arm 72 for connection with the margin release key 73, which is normally disposed at the extreme leftof the bank of tabulator keys, but may be otherwise arranged.
The collar 60 is also provided with a cam face or liange 75 disposed in a plane to be actuated by a bell and lock stop 76 mounted upon the carriage. This stop is sub; stantiall similar in construction to the tabulator s ps 22, before described, with the exception that the locking walls 53 thereof are provided with contacts 77 and 78 of ditlemnt lengths to successively impart different degrees of oscillation to thecollar 60 at spaced intervals.' While the form of bell and lock stop just described has been found desirable, any construction accomplishing a similar result may be used. At the opposite end of the collar from the tiange 75, a hell-ringing connection 79 is secured and in the present instance comprises a bell ham. mer 80 adapted to contact with a bell 81 carried by a. bracket 82 upon the machine frame in the usual manner. When the Bange 75 contacts with the stop 77 the collar is rocked to such an extent as to withdrawthe bell hammer to the position indicated lny dotted` lines in Fig. 2, and as the Bange leaves the stop 77, the hammer is restored or thrown Vinto contact with the bell by any desired form of spring, for instance as shown at 83.
