JacK-acrna'rrne LEVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
Application filed November 15, 1919. Serial No. 338,408.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, Crmimns Ml. Mani;- HAM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Viscensin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jack-Actuating Lovers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in jack actuating levers more particularly adapted for concrete work.
In the construction of modern concrete work lifting jacks are utilized for raising and holding the forms or false work which supports the concrete before it has set, and detachable means are preferably used for actuating the raising portion of the jack.
It is one of the objects of the present in vention to provide a lever construction for raising the movable portion of lifting jacks which may be easily attached or detached from the jack without the use of tools of any kind, and which when attached will firmly engage the parts and permit the raising of the lifting member with a minimum effort.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jack actuating lever with a clamping means which is moved into clamping engagement with the lifting member ofthe jack each time the lever is moved upwardly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jack actuating leverhaving a toothed clamping member which is moved horizontally into clamping engagement with the lifting member of the jack with a plurality of the teeth engaging the lifting member each time the lever is moved upwardly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jack actuating lever having a toggle link connection between the actuating lever and the clamping means to form a more eflicientpower leverage.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a jack actuating lever whiclris of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved jack actuating lever and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Figure l'is a side view of a lifting jack showing the improved actuating lever attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the actuating lever on a larger scale;
Fig.3 is a side view of the actuating lever, a part broken away; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, on a larger scale, taken on line 4% of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates a standard, 9 the telescoping lifting member thereof and 10, one of the clamping jaws of a lifting jack which the i111 proved actuating lever designated as a whole by. the reference character 11 is used in connection with. The jack is formed with opposite shouldered 1 flanges 12 for support ing a portion of the actuating lever 11 thereon.
The actuating lever comprises a lever member 13, a clamping collar 1%, a slidable toothed jaw 15 and a toggle link connection 16 connecting the lever member 13 to the collar 14 and the aw 15; The clamping collar it is of semicircular shape to slip freely sidewise over the tubular lifting member 9' and is formed at one end with an enlargement having a transversely extending opening l l of right angular form in vertical section for holding the slidable clamping jaw 15 mounted therein. The inner end of the clamping jaw is curved to conform to the shape of the portion of the lifting member 9 engaged and is also threaded to form clamping teeth 1'? which bite into the lifting member and firmly clamps the collar to the said member. The clamping jaw 15 is moved into and out of engagement with the lifting membcr by the upper curved link 18, the upper portion of which extends through an opening 19 in the lower portion of the collar and is connected to the collar by a pin 20 to form a pivotal connection therebetween. The short portion 18 of the upper link above the pivot/pin 20 forms the short arm of the lever link and extends loosely into an opening 21 in the clamping jaw and reciprocates the said jaw into and out of engagement with the lifting member of the jack each time the link is actuated. The lower link members 22 connecting the lower end of the upper link 18 to the hand or operating lever '13 are pivotally connected at their lower ends to saidhand lever close to the inner or ack engaging end 13 thereof. Said inner end 13 is provided with a notch or recess 23 to form a more firm engagement with the shouldered flanges 12 of the jack upon which it rests when in use. 7
in operation, the actuating lever is connected to the jack in the manner shown in Fig. 1 andthe hand lever is then swung upwardly and downwardly. Each upward swing will. at first move the toothedjaw into clamping engagement with lifting member of the jack and afterward lift said member, and each downward movement of the hand lever will at first disengage the jaw from the member and a further downward movement will permit the clamping collar to drop and to be inposition to again clamp and move the member upwardly when the hand lever is again raised.
To remove the actuating lever from the jack, it is only necessary to drop the hand lever to its lower position and move the clamping collar laterally from engagement with the lifting member of the jack.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen thatthe jack actuating lever is of very simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described. 1
What I claim as my invention is:

A jack actuating lever, comprising a collar adapted to be temporarily associated with the member to be lifted, a clamping jaw movably carried thereby and having an opening, a lever having one end portion a djacent the collar, a lower link member con-V nected at its lower end to theadjacent lever end, and an upper link memberpivotally connected at its lower end to the upper end of the lower link member, the upper end portion of the upper link member pivotally connected to the collar and 7 extending through a portion thereof and into the opening of the clamping jaw and moving said parts in different directions. v
6. A jack actuating lever, comprising a collar member having aside opening and a bottom opening, a clamping aw ino'vably carried thereby and having an opening, a
lever member having one end portion adja# cent the collar, a lower link member pivoted at its lower end to'the lever-near its adjacent end, and an upper link memberpivoted at its lower end to the upper end of the lower link member, the upper link member medially of its length extending through the bottom opening of the collar and pivotally connected thereto andhaving its upper end portion 7 extending into the opening in thejaw member. V V
