Description

, W. D.` BARTON. DEVICE FOR'HOLDING ICEUPON THE RUNNING BOARDS 0F VEHICLES.
V APPLICATION FILED JAN. 3, I92I. f 1,401,128, Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFl-CE.
WARREN D. BARTON, F WAGO, TEXAS.
Application filed January 3, 1921.
To all whom t mcm/ concern.'
Be it known that I, WARREN D. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residin,- at Waco, in the county of McLennan and tate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Ice Upon the Running-Boards of Vehicles, of which the following is al specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for holding ice upon the running boards of vehicles.
'An important object of the invention.. is to provide a device of this character which is adapted for a detachable connection to the ruiming board of a vehicle, and which embodies an upwardly extending prong adapted to engage in the cake of ice to be held on the running board and prevent displacement thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely Simple in construction and cheap to manufacture in order that the same may be rendered practical for use'.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device having an approximately horizontal ange adapted to abut the upper surface of the running board of a vehicle, said device being provided with means for dev tachably engaging the running board and with an upwardly extending prong adapted to engage the cake of ice to hold the same upon the running board.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention, and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my device in position upon the running board of an automobile;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section thereof;
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. l is a perspective of a further form of my device, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective of a third form thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral indicates an ap- Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2'?, 1921.
Serial No. 434,778.
proximately horizontal flange having extending upwardly therefrom a substantially vertical prong 11, sharpened at its upper vend as at 12. The flange has extending downwardly from the under surface thereof a stem 13 which is adapted to engage in an opening O formed in the running board R of the car.
It will be seen that my device embodies au approximately horizontally disposed flange having op-positely directed vertical portions connected therewith, the upper of said vertical portions constituting a prong which, when the device is in position upon the running board, is adapted to engage in a cake of ice. i
In the preferred form of my device, the device is formed by bending the central portion of heavy gage wire to form a sub- `gtantially horizontally disposed circular loop 14C, which forms the flange 10. The ends of the wire at their junction are inturned toward the center of the circle and at the approximate center thereof are oppositely directed .to form upwardly and downwardly extending portions, corresponding to the portions 11 and 13 and approximately perpendicular to the loop 14. In a still further form of my device a piece of heavy gage wire is employed and bent centrally to form a U-shaped loop 15 corresponding to the flange 10, the ends of the arms of the U being bent in opposite directions to form the portions 11 and 13. The upwardly extending portion 11 is, of course, in each instance sharpened in order that it may readily engage in the cake of ice.
It will be obvious that my device, by reason of its simplicity of construction and the ease with which it may be employed, is particularly well adapted for use. It will likewise be obvious that the construction of the same may be widely varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. This variation may take the form of any desired quick detachable connection for securing the device to the running board, or may lie in the peculiar construction of the flange or the prong 11. I, accordingly, do not limit myself to the construction hereinbefore set forth, except as so limited by the subjoined Y claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
of the running board, and a prong extending upwardly from und secured to said member. Y l0 In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature.
WARREN D. BARTON.
