ALBERT A. CLYMER, 0F. GOWRIE; IOWA;
PATENT OFFICE TOOL FOR HANDLING TILES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 20, 1921.
Application filed March 23, 1920. Serial No. 368,174.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. CLYMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at G-owrie, in the countyof Webster and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tool for Handling Tiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a tool for handling tile, and more especially of tiles of large size, and the object is to provide means for moving the tile from place to place, by rolling, and for setting the tile in proper position, and at the proper grade, when laying pipe in a ditch.
A still further object is to provide a tool of the character indicated which shall include a handle or shank portion and a plurality of engaging devices or arms by means of which the end of the tile is engaged, making it possible to readily rotate or roll the tile upon the surface of ground, or in a ditch when the tile is being set.
A still further object is to provide a tool of the type indicated which shall include a handle portion having a plurality of arms, one of the arms being adjustable, to permit of use in handling tiles of diiferent sizes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the manner of using the tool for handling a tile or section of pipe.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device per 86 and showing that form including an adjustable arm.
Fig. 3 is a view of another form in which both jaws are rigid, the jaws being spaced for handling asection of pipe or tile of a given size.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 i of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The handle or shank portion of the tool is designated 10 and is of the required size and length, depending upon the size of the pipe or tile in connection with which it is designed for use.
The handle is provided at one end with a rigid terminal jaw or arm 12 which may be formed by bending over one end of the handle, and'slidably mounted on the handle or shank is an adjustable arm or jaw 14;, this ad ustable arm being provided with apertured portions or sockets 15 and 16 and with set screws 17 and 18 for retaining the arm in position. It is desirable that the adjustable arm be so positioned that the space between the arms shall provide about one inch play when the end of the tile or pipe is en ga ed in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
is shown, arms 12 and 14 are round so that their surfaces to en age the tile may fofim bearing means on w ich said tile may r0 In the form shown in Fig. 3 the two jaws are rigid with. reference to the handle, the latter being designated 20, and the jaws bemg shown at 21 and 22. Under these circumstances the tool will be made in different sizes, in order that it may be adapted for pipe or tile of diflerent diameter.
If the tiles are laid on loose earth on the bottom of a ditch, and not only require placing in correct alinement but also require adjustment to grade, this may be accomplished by applying suflicient weight, as by standing on the'tile, and at intervals turnmg the tile by means of the tool herein described.
What is claimed is A tile rolling tool having a handle and separated substantially parallel elongated substantially straight arms extending laterally therefrom to receive the tile between them, said arms having bearing surfaces to permit the tile to roll while engaged by the tool, one of said arms being adjustable relatively to the other arm for the purpose specified, the handle being bent intermediate its end to provide the first arm, the adjustable arm having a socket, a brace extending from the adjustable arm also having a socket, said sockets being slidably engaged with the handle, and individual means to secure the sockets to the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT A. CLYMER.
Witnesses: I
F. W. Lnvnoursr, N. A. LINDQUIST.
