To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. NORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grave-Markers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to improvements in grave markers, and has special reference to the type of grave marker as set forth in my U. Patent No. 1,276,798, granted to me August 27, 1918, one object of the invention being the provision of a novel means whereby a cross may be attached to the main supporting staff or standard so that the present grave marker may be adapted for use upon Christian or non-Christian graves.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a novel joint for making the connection in a thorough and rapid manner and in such a way so as not to disfigure the appearance of the complete marker.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete marker, showing the cross attached.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cross and the upper end of the standard, showing the method of attaching, dotted lines indicating the position of the tongue before the same is bent to attach the cross in place.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the main staff of the marker, which is achannel member having two flanges 6 and carrying the marking device 7 At the back of the same, adjacent to the marking device, is punched from the body thereof, the oifset tongue or tang 8 which is adapted when the cross 9 is connected to the upper end of the standard to fit within the transverse slot 10 of such cross member and be bent downwardly as indicated in Fig. 2, to hold the lower end of the body of the cross member seated telescopically within the upper end of the standard. Punched from the body of the cross member and offset slightly at an angle is a cleat 12 which is adapted to engage the upper edge 13 of the standard so that when the tongue is bent downwardly as before described, the cross will be attached to two points of the upper end of the standard so as to be properly supported. The lower end of the cross is also provided with an aperture 1 1 to permit of the projection therein of the attaching member 15 of the identification card.

The cross is formed of two pieces or members 16 and 17 each one of which is a channel member, the member 17 having the flange cut away as at 18 so as to fit astride of the other member and permit of the use of a single rivet or fastening member 19 to at tach the members rapidly in place.

From the foregoing description it is evident that with the marker as set forth in the above mentioned patent, constructed with the tongue through the upper end of the standard thereof that the present cross device may be attached thereto as an auxiliary and the present grave marker may be used either for Christian or non-Christian graves and that thus a great expense is saved in a device of this character where a great number of cross devices have to be made as well as those without them.

hat I claim as new is:

1. A grave marker including a supporting standard having at the upper end thereof a bendable tongue, and a cross having a portion adapted to fit coextensive with the upper end of the standard and provided with a linked opening for the reception of the tongue, and with an integral cleat for engaging the upper edge of the standard whereby the cross may be locked to the standard.

2. A grave marker including two members, each of which is provided with two parallel flanges one of said members constituting a ground engaging member andthe other an ornamental member, the adjacent portions of such members being adapted to seat one within the other, and cooperative means carried by the adjacent portions of both members for locking the members in such over-lapped position, such latter means including a tongue carried by one member, the other member being provided with an opening for receiving the tongue and with a cleat for engaging the extreme end of the other member.

3. A grave marker including a longitudinal member substantially U-shaped in cross section to fit coextensively Within one end of the first member, the same being provided With an opening to receive the tongue and having projected from the top thereof an angular cleat to engage the upper edgeof 10 the standard and thus detachably locking the two members together at tWo points.
