WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED JULY i], 1919- Patented Dec. 13,1921.

" CHARLES w. KING, or MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
WRENCH.
Application filed July 11, 1919. Serial No. 310,269.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. KING,
7 a citizen of the United Statesof America,
residing at Memphis, in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel type of wrench which comprises in combinationrigid jaws movable or interchangeable filler plates or jaws to vary the wrench grip opening to Suit the work.
In its preferred embodiment my invention contemplates the provision of a handle having rigid jaws at each end and carrying filler plates or movable jaws which can be shifted into position between either pair of rigid jaws to vary the size of the wrench grips. Preferably the rigid jaws at one end are more widely spaced than the jaws at the other end, thus adapting the wrench by the shifting of the movable jaws to either end to provide adjustments for small variations in size of the nuts or other work to be handled.
A further object is to hinge the filler plates or movable jaws so that they can be swung into position between the desired pair of rigid jaws and to pivot the movable jaws on a screw, the threads of which are pitched so as to shift the plate or jaw, as it is adjusted from one to the other of its operating positions, sufliciently to hold it with firmness against the adjacent jaw.
My invention also comprises the novel details of construction and arrangements of parts, which in their preferred embodiment only are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in plan of the wrench.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The wrench comprises a handle portion 1 which, in the embodiment shown, consists of a fiat metal body having vertical marginal side flanges 2 and 3 extending the full length of its side edges and beyond its ends where the metal is thickened to form the pairs of rigid jaws 4, 4 and 5, 5, the jaws 4 being spaced slightly farther apart than the jaws 5, say about one-eighth of an inch, as this is typical of the variation in sizes of nuts. It will be noted that the handle is contracted at its center and is made nearits ends with the greater width oflset toward opposite sides at opposite ends. It willbe observed that the flange 2" extends in a straight unbroken line from the center ofthe handle to one end and that the flange 3 extends in like manner and parallel with the flange 2 to the oppositeend. the center of the handle I provide a screw bolt 6 mounted in countersunk holes in the flanges 2' and 3. I pivotally mount on this screw'bolt a plurality of filler plates or movable jaws comprising relatively narrow shanks 7 and wider heads 8 which overhang beyond the ends of the handle proper and have their overhung heads corresponding in shape with the overhung ends of the jaws 4 or 5. The inner ends of the shanks are rounded and havethreaded holes tapped.
therethrough and screwed on the screw bolt 6 which being midway between the jaws will. permit the heads 8 to be swung into position.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 13, 1921'.
Crosswise of i bolt it will have a slight lateral movement 7 which causes it to bind firmly against the adjacent straight flange of the handle or against the interposed jaw or jaws between it and the flange. This pivoting arrange ment is preferable but any other suitable pivots may be employed. 7 r
In operation, the movable jaws are adjusted in position between the jaws intended to be used so as to reduce the space between the jaws to fit the work and when this has been accomplished the wrench will function exactly like a rigid wrench. By varying the space between the jaws the wrench is adapted to fit two sizes of nuts for each movable jaw.
While it is preferable that the movable jaws should be pivotedto the handle it is g within the contemplation of my invention that they may be movable in any manner into position between the pair or pairs: of jaws as may be desired.
This inventlon is not intended tobe restricted in scope tothe specific embodiments shown, but contemplates such modifications as come Within the spirit and scope of the 1 claims. a r
Having thus described my invention, What 5 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A Wrench having alongitudinally recessed handle terminating in relatively offset pairs of differently spaced jaws at its ends, and filler vstrips hinged in the hollow of the 10 handle and'movable into position between either pair of jaws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES W. KING.
