structurally the present stove is exclusively of cast metal, with a body a and base 7) on which the body of the stove is mounted.
The said body contains two combustion chambers c and (Z respectively, of which the front chamber 0 is exclusively a gas chamber having the gas burners 2 in its bottom and located at the front of the heater 5 and approximately half the height thereof. The chamber 0 is provided with an inwardly and upwardly curved radiating top 3 and a removable front plate 4, which however, is fixed in place by a screw 5 through a stud 6 rigid with the base I), so that, when needed, this plate may be removed but otherwise it remains permanently in place. The sides and rear of this chamber are of course permanent with the top 3. Air to support combustion enters through the perforated plate 8 at the bottom of chamber 0, and draft proceeds from the top and rear of the chamber through a box shaped draft space'lO having an externallycontrolled damper or lid 11 at its top adapted to be more or less opened for purposes of draft when the burners 2 are going, but which is closed when these burners are not used and there is fire only in chamber (Z. The gases of combustion rising from burners 2 escape through the said draft opening 10 and of course carry a portion of heat with them, but this is mostly absorbed in the top of chamber (Z fipecification of Letters Patent.

Furthermore, and to promote such absorption and radiation of heat into be room before it reaches the outlet flue 141, we constructthe front and top portion of chamber d' with an inwardly stepped wall 15, which narrows the chamber step by step and exposes the large horizontal surfaces f of each step where the flow of the heat or hot air is checked and absorbed, whether it comes across from chamber a or from fire in the bottom of chamber (Z.
Respecting the chamber (Z it will be seen that this chamber involves the dual fuel principle, having a gas burner centrally in the bottom thereof and grate, and other" features for burning coal or wood, and either hard fuel or gas may be used separately or both together, or the said burner may be used in conjunction withthe burners 2 in chamber 0. Indeed, the construction is such that gas can be burned in chamber 0 simultaneously with coal or wood in chamber 6, in which case the damper 11 is opened and the draft controlled by damper 17 in the exhaust flue.
The chamber (Z has a suitable fire pot 18, fixed side grate bars 19 and middle rotatable grates on tube 20. The said grate tube 20 is confined to the fire pot and supported at its ends on the gas burner pipe 22, which extends through the said grate tube and the wall of the fire pot at both ends and is rotatably supported in the sides of the stove. The said gas burner tube has a gas intake 21 at one end and a stem 28 at the other end'provided with a crank handle 24 and one end of the grate tube 20 is fixed thereto by a screw, or its equivalent, so as to rotatably rock the grate tube through burner pipe 22 by means of the handle 24: when the grate is to be shaken to drop the ashes. Perforations 27 in the said burner tube or pipe discharge the gas into the annular gas circulating belt or space about the same within outer tube 20, and these perforations are preferably along the top of pipe 22 so that the heat from above will strike through and heat the gas before it is ignited, and the gas escapes from said belted area through perforations 29 in the sides and bottom of the tube 20, where it is ignited and burns up on both sides of said tube.
An ash pit 30 is provided beneath the coal grate or burner provided with a drawer or" receiving medium but serving also the function of a damper for air to the coal burner particularly, and whereby the draft for the coal fire is'initially controlled. To this end the said ash pit is open to the outer air at 32 in its rear, but an equivalent air intake could be provided, and the said ash pan or receptacle is of course pushed in when the grate is shaken to receive all the ashes and more or less to control air to the fire.
All joints are sealed with rabbeted or overlapping edges to prevent possible escape of gas into the room even if gas should accidentally escape from the burners without being lighted, as it would then be drawn'up the flue. l
The, steps 7 are found very convenient to place pans or the like thereon to be heated or even for cooking. If coal or wood be used the gas burner -22 is employed to start the fire and is then turned off. The solid fuel is introduced throughthe door 35.
Importance is attached to the stepped formation of the front and top of chamber 6 because the said steps are adapted to be utilized for heating vessels when either or 7 both chambers are being used, thus, in a working sense, making the steps a utility portion of the front or gas chamber while in a mechanical or structural sense the steps belong only to the rear chamber.
What we claim is:
1. In a combination stove as described, a heating chamber having fixed grate bars in its bottom and a rotatable grate member therewith having a tubular body provided with perforation along its sides and bottom, and a gas supply tube extending through said tubular body having a line of perforation at its top and a crank therewith and secured to said body to rockthe same.
2. A combination stove for gas and solid fuel, comprising a chamber having fixed grate members in its bottom and sides for solid fuel and a middle tubular grate memher having perforations to emit gas, and a rotatable gas supply pipe on which said tubular grate member is fixedly mounted and provided with perforations to emit gas into said tubular member.
