Description

UNITED STATES;
PATENT @FFICn N WILLIAM A. PITT, or NEW. YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTINGGAS BY EITECTRICITJY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,811, dated J une 10, 1873 ;v application filed February 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PITT,
, ot' the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented a certain new and useful 1my provement in Lighting Gas by Electricity;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suicient to enable those skilled in the `art to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 represents a side view, showing my invention applied to a gas-fixture. Fig. 2 is a top vieu7 of the attachment to the stopcock of said fixture.
This invention relates to an apparatus for lighting gas by electricity, which is so constructed and arranged th at the circuit is closed for creating the electric spark by the movement of the cock in turning on the gas. This result being accomplished, fthe conductor of electricity or igniting finger is thrown out of action for breaking the circuit.
The invention consists in applying to an ordinary cock for rcgulatin g the admission of gas to a "burner, a pair of pivoted arms or cranks, arranged on a disk or washer applied to said cock, and connected by a non-conducting cord with a pivoted or vibrating finger or wire, which is situated in close proximity to the burner and connected with one of the poles of a galvanic battery, so that when the cock is turned to admit the gas to the burner said vibrating finger will be brought in contact with the tip `ofthe burner or termination of the opposite pole ofthe battery, thus creating an electric spark for igniting the issuing jet of gas, after which the circuit is immediately broken, and the igniting or circuit-closing in ger is removed from the burner by the action of a spring. y
Ain the drawing may represent a gas-nxture, chandelier, bracket, drop-light, or other analogous fixture to which my apparatus for lighting gas is to be applied. The fixture or gas-pipe is provided as usual with a stop-cock, P, and key B, and to the upper end of said cock is attached a disk or washer, C', as shown.
A movable crank-arm, C2, pivoted or hung loosely on a central screw, projecting from said disk G1, carries a second pvoted or loose arm, C3, which is, by means ofa cord, I, of silk, catgut, or other non-conducting material, connected to a vibrating linger or wire, F, arranged in proper relation to the tip l)x of the burner, as shown.
E is a bracket or insulating collar of wood,
ivbry, vulcanite, or other suitable material,-
a stud, S, on the disk or washer of i the stopi cock to move the crank-arm C? or its pivot beyond its center, and, through the medium of the arm C3 and cord I, to bring the curved or vibrating inger or wire F in contact with the tip, of the burner, thus closing the electric circuit and crea ting a discharge of sparks which serve to ignite the gas issuing from the burner.
During the igniting operation, which is almost instantaneous, the stop-cock is turned open to its full extent, causing the crank-arm to pass beyond its center, when the same is immediately returned to its normal` position for removing the igniting-tinger from contact with the burner, in order to break or interrupt the electric circuit, by means of a spiral or other suitable spring, H, arranged in proper relation to the circuit-closing or igniting of an electric circuit-closing and breaking device, arranged in proper relation to the burner, 3. The disk G1 provided with erankmms and combined with a stop-cock for enabling C2 C3, and with studs S S, combined with a the circuit to beelosed for igniting thev gas stop-cock and circuit-closing device, for operaby the opening movement of said cock, as tion in the manner set fort-h. herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the stop-cock at- WILLIAM A. PITT. taehnient C1, and the insulating-stringl, with bent Wire or igniting-nger F, spring H, Witnesses: l and insulator E, for the purposevherein set CHARLES PITT, forth. P. E. COLLINS.
