0. E. NEWCDMB.
NUT LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 26, 1918.

I/vu EN TD DEL/M/ZI'XENElz/UUM DELANGY ELWOOD NEWCOMIB, OF SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA.
NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
Application filed September 26, 1918. Serial No. 255,792.
T0 at whom it may concern Be it known that I, DnLANoY ELWOOD NnwcoMB, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Sydney, in the Province of N ova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nut locks, and the objects of the invention are to provide a simple and effective device of a type in which a projecting end of awasher member is adapted to be bent against the side of the nut, in which the parts will be efliciently designed to perform the functions required of them with security.
Further objects are to provide a nut lock which may be manufactured at low cost, of few parts and endurable in use, and it consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specifications and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure l, is a sectional perspective view illustrating an embodiment of the invention in position on the rail.
Fig. 2, is a cross sectional view.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the look ing washer.
Fig. 4, is a plan view showing the recess in the plate against which the washer is adapted to lie.
Fig. 5, is a perspective view of an alternative form of the invention.
Fig. 6, is a plan view of the device shown Fig. 5.
Fig. 7, is a longitudinal section through the device as shown in Fig. 6.
In the drawings like characters of referenee indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the Figs. 1 to i, A represents a washer having a central opening 10, for the bolt B, the washer being provided on opposite sides of the opening with projecting tongues 11 and 12 designed to fit into recesses or slots 13 and 145 formed in the plate 15, against which the not C is to lock. The
outer portion of the washer is formed with a projection 16, designed to be bent upwardly against the side of the nut to thereby hold it in position. The projection 16 is formed with a narrow neck 17 to facilitate bending the device when locked, being bent into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
In the alternative form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 to 7 the washer 20 is provided with a side wing 21 adapted to fit against the head of the rail or other proj ection to prevent turning of the washer.
22 represents the locking projection designed to be bent against the nut. The washer itself is formed with a radial cut the opposite sides of which are bent in opposite direction against the nut and the rails to which it is to be applied, whereby the slack will be taken up.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my inven tion within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof it is intended that all matters contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A nut lock comprising a washer having a central perforation for a bolt and a radial cut whereby both edges of the out portion may be bent in opposite directions, the washer being formed integral with a wing member designed to engage the member against which the nut is adapted to bind and to prevent turning of the washer, and a lock projection extending from the washer and designed to be bent against the face of the nut.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
'DELANCY ELVVOOD NEWCOMB.
Witnesses DOROTHY MoKAY, LoUIsn MACLEAN.
