CATTLE-GUARD.

To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY Bisi-roi?, a subject of the King of Great Britain, a resident of the city of Calgary, Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Guards, of which thefollowing is a specication.
This invention relates toimprovements in cattle guards, consisting of metal plates applied on the ties cross-wise to the rails, and the objects of the invention are to prevent cattle straying on a railroad track,'to provide such a cattle guard that is not liable to go out of repair, and to render the cattle guard simple in construction and capable of effectively performing the functions required of it.
The invention consists essentially of the improved construction of cattle guard particularly described in the following specilication, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings which form part of the same, and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cattle guard.

Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawing; A represents a railroad track and B the improved cattle guard.
The improved cattle guard comprises a central section 10 formed of a plate which is angular in cross section, and is turned upwardly at one end, forming a flange 11 bolted or otherwise fastened to the bottom end of one side of the tie 12.
The plate 10 extends upwardly at an angle from the bottom of the tie 12 to the top of the tie 13 and the end of the said plate 10,
remote from the flange 11 is bent downwardly providing a section 14 extending substantially vertically and abutting, as at 15, the top of the tie 13.
The triangular recess formed underneath the plate 10 by the side wall of the tie 13 may be filled with cement or other suitable Specification of Letters Patent.

The tie 12 located on one side of the section 10 is provided onl its top face with a plate 18 of inverted V-shape. The two legmembers of this V-shaped plate 18 are bent outwardly and form the flanges 19 and 20 abutting the top of the tie 12.
The plate 18 may be fastened to the tie 12 by means of spikes driven therein through the flanges 19 and 20. f
The plate 18 is made of three sections placed, one section on each side, and one between the rails.
The top face of the tie 21 on the opposite side of the section 10 is provided with a similar plate 22 of inverted V-shape and provided with the flanges'23 and 24 abutting the top of the tie 12, and designed to receive the fastening means adapted `to retain the plate 22 in proper position.
Like the plate 18, the plate 22 is also made of three sections fastened to the tie 21, one section on each side and one section between the rails, so as to provide clearance therefor.
The depressiony 25 formed between the Y stray on the track, they will slip on the plate 18 and on the section 10 and be frightened.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a somewhat modified form of the cattle guard which consists of a section 10a formed of a plate having one edge provided with a flange 11"L fastened to the bottom of a wall of the tie 12a and extending upwardly and angularly therefrom, over and past the tie 26. The plate 10a is bent downwardly at an obtuse angle 27, and extends over the tie 28; the said plate 10 is then bent again forming a hori- Zontal section 29 having its end inflexed upwardly, thus providing the flange 30 adapted to receive the fastening means to be driven into the tie 31.
The plate 10a is suitably fastened to the tie 26 and 28 as at 35 and 36.
A plate 32 extends above the horizontal section 29 of the plate 10a, downwardly to the top of the tie 31 where the said plate 32 is bent toa flange 33 abutting thereto,
A reinforcing angular member 34 may be fastened to the said plate 32 and on top of the tie 3l so as toenable the plate to support any additional weight that may be placed thereon as when an animal would step on the plate. l
f A plate 37 extends downwardly over and past the tie 3l, to which it is fastened, and is bent as at 38, affording a horizontal section having an end inflected upwardly and forming a flange 39 Vfastened tothe tie 40.
The plate 37 is also bolted to the angular brace 34 supportedby the tie 31.
Above thel horizontal section formed bythe bend 38 of the plate 37, another plate 42 extends downwardly tothe top of the tie 40. The plate 42 is bent horizontally to a flange, then upwardly and again downwardly providing a V-shaped section 43 abutting the top ofthe tie 40.
An angular brace 44 to which the plate 42 is bolted, together wit-h the upwardly eX- a tending portion of the il-shaped section 43 serves to reinforce the same.
Thetie 12a is provided on the top thereof with a plate of inverted V-shape 182L flanged and fastened thereto, eXactlyas that provided on top the tie l2 in Fig. l, and described above.
The plates 18, 10, 32, 37 and 42 arev all channeled to provide clearance for the rails A.
Y The slanted plates reinforced by members 34 and 44 as described above are also held in their slanting position by the horizontally extending rods 45 and 46. Y y
a The-recesses formed underneath the plate 10a and 37, between theties26, 28, 3l and 40 may be filled with cement or other suitable material, as illustrated in Figs'. 3 and 4.
The construction of the cattle `guard is of an extremely simple nature and could be advantageously utilized in many places where other forms of cattle guards would prove defective.
-As many changes could be -made inthe above construction and many widely different Vembodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall 'be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A railway cattle guard comprising a main section consisting of an apertured plate adapted to form two sides of an obtusetriangle formed with a flange at one end and horizontally extended at the other end, a
flangeon said horizontal extension, a plurality of inclined guard plates formed integral with and overlapping said apertured plate, and additional inclined guard plates arranged parallel with said first guard plates and connected thereto by means of a reinforcing element.
2. in a cattle guard the combination with the railway ties of a main apertured and angularly benty plate section adapted to t over two ofthe saidI ties and between the second and third tie and a plurality of smaller angularly bent and flanged plates provided with reinforcing means and adapted to be secured on the ties and to overlap in turn said main plate and one another, secur ing means for said main plate.
3. A railway cattle guard comprising a main section composed of an apertured plate adapted to form two sides of an obtuse triangle-formed with a. flange at one end and beingl horizontally extended at the other end,
a pair of flanged plates of inverted V-shape supportedon ties onl opposite sides of said ymain section.
