Description

A. A. BECK.
ATTACHMENT FOR PENCILS.
APPLICATION men 1AN.4.1921.

A TTOR/VEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ATTACHMENT FOR PENCILS.
Application filed January 4, 1921.
T (:71 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ARTHUR A. BECK. a citizen of the United States. and resident of Bemidji. in the county of Beltrami and State of Minnesota. have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Pencils. of which the following is a full. clear. and exact description.
This invention relates to pencils. pens. or other writing or drawing instruments. of this character. and has particular relation thereto for an attachment therefor. the same being more in the nature of an improvement over my invention, patented Mar. 15. 1921. No. 1.371.771. I
The invention contemplates the provision of an attachment. which constitutes the means for associating an eraser with the end of a pencil. pen or other writing or drawinginstrument, of an analogous character. said means being designed also to function as a clip for retaining the instrument in a pocket.
Another object of my invention is to provide. in combination with a tubular attachment having radially adjusted lugs. a slidable means for effecting a radial contraction or expansion of said lugs to grip or release the eraser.
Another object in view. is to provide means carried by the slidable actuating member. which functions to advance or feed the eraser from the tubular receptacle.
With these and other objects in view. some of which will appear hereafter, the invention consists in the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts. set forth in the following specification. pointed out in the appended claims. and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of pencil equipped with the attachment. and illustrating the same in its shifted position to lock the eraser in its adjusted po sition.
Fig. 2 is a similar view. illustrating the locking means and actuator therefor. shifted to releasing position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view therethrough. taken approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view illustrating the parts in locked position, and
Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating the parts in released position.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, designates a portion of a Specification of Letters Patent.

pencil. and 11 the tubular or cylindrical" body of the attachment, which is adapted to be telescopically received by the extremity of the pencil, and secured thereto in any suitable manner. The outer free end of the sleeve is provided with upstanding lugs 12 posed books 16. The eraser 17 is snugly received by the outer free end of the body 11, and 1s adjustable with relation thereto or removable therefrom.
The means for effecting the radial contraction or expansion of the split ring to move the gripping lugs 12 into, or out of the gripping engagement with the eraser. comprises a clip 18. which is longitudinally shiftable on the body 11, by means of the engagement of the rivet 19 passing through the body of the clip, and extending into the slot 20 in the body. The upper end of the clip is provided with a slot 21, having upper restricted portion 22. said slot gradually increasing in width toward its enlarged end 23. to provide means adapted to co-act with the books 16 for effecting the contraction or expansion of the split band 15, upon the shifting of the clip 18.
The inner head 24 of the rivet 19 underlies the eraser 17 and is designed to co-act therewith for advancing the same from the end of the body 11 upon the upward movement of the clip to release the gripping lugs 12. The lower extremity of the clip normally contacts with the side of the body 11. due to the inherent resiliency of the material from which it is constructed, and serves as a means for retaining the pencil in a pocket.
In use of the device. when it is desired to remove or adjust the eraser 17, the clip 18 is shifted upwardly permitting the hooked end 16 of the split band 15 to separate relatively. as the increased width of the slot 23 registers therewith. The eraser may then be withdrawn, and a new one substituted, or the same may be adjusted to present a new surface. hen the desired adjustment has been obtained. the clip is shifted downwardly, to dispose the restricted portion 22 of the slot 21 in engagement with the books 16. This will effectthe radial contraction of the split hand, and the gripping lugs 12, to bring the same into biting engagement with the eraser,
While the specification, claims and drawings describe and illustrate the device as an attachment for a pencil, it is to be understood that no limitation is necessarily made to such use, as the device is clearly applicable to pens, or other Writing or drawing instruments with which it is desirable to associate an eraser.
There has been illustrated and described asingle and preferred embodiment of the invention, but the right is reserved to cum bodiinents other than that illustrated here in, to the full extent of the general meaning by the terms in which the claims are expressed, and by'variations in the phrase ology of the same.
What I claim is: r
'1. Inan attachment for pencils, comprising a sleeve adapted to be secured to one extremity with a pencil, and provided at its opposite end with radially adjustable lugs extending therefrom, constituting means for retaining an eraser therein, the combination with means for effecting radial adjustment of said lugs comprising a split resilient band embracing said lugs, and a'longitudinally shiftable clip having a slot therein for receiving the terminals of said split band, said slot being of increasing width in one direction.
extremity with radially adjustable lugs, a
split ring co-acting with said lugs, hooks formed on the terminals of said split ring, a longitudinally shiftable clip carried by saidsleeve having a slot of increasing width adapted to engage said hooks, whereby upon shifting of the sleeve the split ring will be radially retracted or expanded for effecting the gripping or releasing of the lugs with respect to an eraser carried by'the sleeve.
3. In a device of the character described, a sleeve adapted to be secured at one extremity to a pencil, a plurality of resilient lugs projecting from its opposite extremity, a resilient-split ring slidably associated with saidlugs, hooks formed at the terminals of said split ring, a sli-dablc clip carried'by said sleeve having a slot therein, the edges of which are adpted to-'coact with the hooks, said slot being of gradually increasing width toward one end whereby upon movements thereof in'opposite directions, the'relative contraction and expansion of the ring and the lugs will be ellected for gripping an eraser received by said sleeve.
