WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Application filed March 3, 1921. Serial No. 449,359.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM E. DENIS, a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashingrMachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in washing machines and refers particularly to a portable construction adapted for application to stationary tubs, the main object being the provision of a simple, durable and cheap machine which can be instantly applied and adjusted to the tub and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical from ever point of View.
I ith this object in view my invention consists in the combination With a stationary tub or receptacle of a portable washing machine mechanism adapted to be fitted and adjusted to said receptacle and to operate in connection therewith.
The invention further consists of a portable washing machine embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as shown, described and particularly pointed out in the claims, it being understood that I reserve the right to make any changes or alterations in the construction of my mechanism as fallwithinthe spirit or scope of the claims. I i
In order that the construction in detail and the manner of using my machine may be more clearly understood and the many features of merit which the invention possesses be fully appreciated, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a washing machine constructed according to my invention and to which drawings I invite attention.
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of my portable washing mechanism applied to the receptacle, whose end walls are shown in section.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the machine applied to the tub or receptacle whose walls are shown in section.
Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of the washing machine, the tub being in section and dotted lines showing the position the agitator or head assumes when operated.
Figs, 4: and 5 represent detail views showing the .manner of constructing the agitator or head to provide the cups or chambers therein, and I Fig. 6 represents an elevation of the bandle member of my washing machine.
Referring by numeralto the drawing in which similar numerals are employedto indicate the same parts in all the views;
The numeral 1 desi nates the stationary tub or receptacle found in houses or dwell: ings and which my machine is particularly adapted to, although the machine may be used in any situation where it would per form its functions in a practical and e-flicient manner. v
The machine as a whole is the embodiment of simplicity and consists of the agitator or head, which comprises the central partitions 2, the end walls 3, and the front and rear walls l, the central. partition being elongated and the end walls being slightly inclined as at 5, to provide the conical cups or chambers 6, such cups being closed by the metal plate or sheet 7, whichis fitted in slot 8 of the head or agitator; as most clearly shown in Figs. l and 5, which construction divides the agitator or head into a series of closed chambers or cups which act upon the clothes in a. manner to press or squeeze the dirt therefrom by forcing the water through the fabric without injury or. damage thereto.
To the central portion of the agitator upon the central partition thereof is secured the plate 9, which is formed with the pair of ears 10, between which is fitted the lower end 11 of the handle 12, a slot 13 being provided in said handle for the passage of the securing bolts 14:, while yokes 15 are provided for suspending the agitator and connecting means 16 are also provided for the agitator, the entire structure being supported and retained in proper adjustment in a receptacle by means of the two-part rod 17 formed with inner threaded ends 18, to be engaged by turn-buckle 19, to jam or force the heads 19' against the walls of the receptacle, the ends of said two-part rod 17 being formed with balls 20, which engage socket 21 in said heads.
The operation of my washing machine will be readily understood from the drawing taken in connection with the descriptiol and it Will be observed that the machine is placed in the receptacle at the desired place and is locked and retained therein by the adjusting rod and that in .such retained position With the clothesand Water in the receptacle, that the rocking of the handle Will reciprocate the agitator and compresses, and draws the Water through the fabric alternately With each sweep of the handle and quickly elfect a thorough cleansing of the clothes Without inflicting any damage to the fabric.
It is evident that I provide a simple, cheap and thoroughly practical machine Which can be easily applied and operated and'which Will perform its functions in a rapid and perfect manner.
I claim:
g 1. In combination with a receptacle or tub, a Washing machine comprising an'agitating element and an adjustable means for mounting and clamping said element in the receptacle or tub, said mounting forming a support upon Which the agitating element is suspended and is capable of a rocking movement.
2. In combination With a tub or receptacle, a portable mounting supported in said tub, an agitating element rockingly supported from said mounting and consisting of a frame, and 'aseries of cups or chambers formed in said frame.
3. In combination with a tub or receptacle, a portable mounting supported in said tub, an agitating element rockingly supported from said mounting and consisting of a frame divided into sections and a plate fitting in said sections to form a series of chambers or cups.
4:. In combination With a tub, a support rigidly mounted against the inner Walls of said tub, andan agitator rockingly support ed and pendant from said support, said support consisting of tWo parts having their inner ends threaded, a turn buckle engaging said ends, and a pair of heads fitted upon the outer ends of said parts to clamp against the tub.
5. Inco1nbination With a tub, a two part adjustable support adapted to fit Within said tub and an agitator supported and pendant from said support to have a rocking movement upon said support, said support consisting of two parts having their inner ends threaded, a turn buckle engaging said ends, and a pair of heads fitted upon the outer ends of said parts to clamp against the tub.
6. A portable Washing .machine mechanism of the character described, consisting of a pair of heads for clamping against the Walls of a receptacle and formed with sockets, a pair of rods each having its outer end formed With a ball and fitting in the sockets of the heads, and having their inner ends threaded, a turn buckle engaging said threaded ends for adjusting said rods and an agitator mounted for rocking movement upon said rods. 1
7. A portable Washing machinemechanism of the character described, consisting of a pair of heads for clamping against the Walls of a receptacle and formed With sockets, a pair of rods each having its outer end formed with a ball and fitting in the sockets ofthe heads, and having their inner ends threaded, a turn buckle engaging said threaded ends foradjusting said rods, loops supported upon said rods, an agitator composed of open chambers and connected to said loops, and a handle for rocking said agitator upon said rods.
8. In a portable Washing machine mechanism, the combination with a receptacle, an adjustable support adapted to engage the receptacle, brackets pendant from said support, and an agitator connected With said brackets and having a series of openchambers.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
