VISE.
-Application filed July 1, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SrANrsLAw J. Kon- Kosz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, Vin the county of Schenectady, State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to vises such for example, as are used by tool-makers and has for its primary object to provide an improved structure and arrangement in a vise whereby the same is universally adjustable and at the same time is compact and Well supported.
A further object of my invent-ion is to provide a universally adjustable vise which can be adjusted with great accuracy and can be clamped in any adjusted position.
. For a .consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the accompanying specification and the claims appended thereto.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a vise embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof; Fig. Sis an end view partly in section; Fig. 4t is a section taken on line 1 -1, Fig. .3; Fig. 5 is a detail view taken on line 5 5, Fig. 3 and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view, taken on line 6 6, Fig. 4.
The visercomprises four parts or members designated on the drawing, A, B, C and D. The two parts or members A and B are adjustably connected together by an arcuate dovetailed connection to form what may be termed the upper half of the vise, the dovetailed connection being such as to permit members A and Bv to be adjusted in a vertical plane relatively to each other. The two parts or members C and D are similarly connected together by an arcuate dovetailed connection to form what may be termed the lower half of the vise, members U and D y likewise being adjustable relatively to eac-h other in a vertical plane. which plane may be at an angle to the plane in which members A and B are adjustable. The upper and lower halves of the vise are then connected together in a horizontal plane in such manner that they may be turned in such plane relatively to each other. By this arrangement, as will appear more clearly hereinafter, the jaws of the vise which are carried by member A may be adjusted to any desired Specification of Letters Patent.

angle relatively to member D which is the part ofthe vise which is fixed to the work bench or other support.
The member A comprises a block in the form of a longitudinal section of a cylinder having a fiat top surface 10 and rounded side surface 11. In the ends of member A are undercut grooves 12 which form part of the dovetail connection with member B. vIn the upper surface 10 of member A is a longitudinally extending inverted T-shaped slot 13 at the center of which is a cross piece 14. Located in slot 13 is a rod 15 which is supported at its central portion in cross piece 14 and is provided with right hand and left hand threads on which screw T-shaped nuts 16 which lit slots 13 and are fastened to the jaws 18 of the vise by bolts 19. Vise jaws 18 are of the width of surface 10 and slide on such surface. 0n one end of rod 15 is a head 15a shaped to receive a tool for turning the rod and, as is obvious, by turning rod 15, jaws 18 of the vise may be moved toward and away from each other, nuts 16 traveling back and forth on the threads of rod 15 and moving jaws 18 with them. Jaws 18 are .provided adjacent their ends with tongues 20 which are located in longitudinally extending grooves 21 in the surface 10 of member A thereby providing guides for jaws 18 and also a means to prevent them from turning.
The member B comprises a block having a concave top' surface to form a cradle in which member A rests and a flat bottom surface. The curvature of the top surface of member B is indicated by line b in Fig. 3 and the upper side edge of member B is indicated by line b in Fig. 1. The side surfaces of member B may be sloping as shown in -F ig. 3. At the two ends of member B are flanges 22 and 23 which are undercut to form tongues 24 and 25 which fit into grooves 12. Flange 22 is preferably formed integral with the body part of member B while flange 23 is carried by an end plate 26 which is fastened to the body part of member B by bolts 27. As shown in Fig. 5 the arrangement is such that when bolts 27 are screwed up to clamp tongues 24 and 25 into grooves 12, a slight clearance is left between end plate 26 and the body part of member B as indicated at 28. By this arrangement it is assured that members A and B can be firmly clamped together. To adjust members A and B angularly relatively to each other, bolts 27 are l'irst loosened after which member A` 1s rocked on member BV through the desired angle and then clamped together again by tightening bolts 27.
The members C and D are of the same general contour. as are members A and'B respectively and are fastened .together in the same general manner. Member C has a flat tcp surface 30 and convex side surface 31 and is provided at its two ends with undercut grooves 32. Member D has a concave top surface which forms a cradle in which member vC rests and on which it can be turned through an arc of a circle. The upper edge of the side wall of member D is indicated by the line Z in Fig. 3. Its bottom surface is fiat adapting it to rest on a bench or other support and it is' provided on its ends withears 33 and at its sides with suitable recesses 34 to receive bolts for fastening it to a bench. Member D is provided with flanges 35 and 36 which are undercut to provide tongues 37 and 38 for engagement in grooves 32. Flange 35 is formed integral with the body portion of member D while fiange'36 iscarried by an end plate 39 which is fastened tothe body portion of member D by bolts 40. By tightening bolts 40 the members C and D can be clamped Y firmly together and they may be adjusted relatively to each other in the same manner as members A and B.
The bottom flat surface of member B rests on the upper fiat surface of member C and ythe two are fastened together in such manner as to permit of their adjustment relatively to each other in a horizontal plane. To this end the member C is provided with an annular recess 42 in which is fastened a ring 43- having van undercut inner edge as indicated at 44, Fig. l. Bing 43 is fastened inplace by suitable studs 45 as shown in Fig.
6, such studs Vbeing inserted from below through slots 46 in the sides of member C, the heads of studs 45 being located in such slots. Depending from the bottom of member B is a projection 47 which is located in recess 42 andheld therein by ring 43, the beveled edge 44 of which its over a complementar-y beveled edge on projection 47.
Whe-n studs 45 are. loosened it will be clear that the upperhalf of vise comprising members A and Bmay be turned in a horizontal plane relatively to the lower half of the vise comprisingmembers C and D, and after being adjusted the'two halves may be firmly clamped together by tightening studs 45 thus pulling ring 43 down into firm engagement with the beveled edge of projection 47.
In connection with a vise as above described, particularly when intended for accurate work, it is usually desirable to provide` suitable scales for indicating the adjustments of the respective members relatively to each other, and in the drawing a scale 50 laid out in degrees and minutes is provided forV indicating the adjustment between members C and D,`a'nd a similar scale, (not shown) may be provided between members B and C. In the case of members A and B I provide member A with teeth 52 which extend around its outer curved surface and with which meshes a worm 53 on one end of a rod 54. By turning rod 54 member A will be adjusted relatively to member B. Rod 54 is located in an opening in projection 47, (Fig. 4) and has a knob 55 on its outer end by Ymeans of which the rod is turned. On knob 55 is marked a scale to show seconds of adjustmentk and between members A and B is a scale 56 which shows minutes and degrees of angular adjustments. Members A and B can be adjusted relatively to each other therefore as to degrees, minutes and B and between members C and D lie at right angles to each other. The face of the vise which is the surface 10 of member A is then horizontal. A piece upon which work is to be performed may be clamped between jaws 18 and it may be then adjusted and clamped at the desired angle by adjusting members A, B, C and D relatively to each other and clamping them in such adjusted positions. Y
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described vthe principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown isonly illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means. r
