WILLIAM DERNELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 DERNELL POTATO PRODUCTS CO., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
APPARATUS FOR DIPPING- VEGETABLES.
' Application mea July 2s To all whom. t may-concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DERNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State vof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Dipping Vegetables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus for dipping vegetables'and refers more particularly to the dipping of potato chips in heated oil.
The important object of the invention is to furnish a simple, efficient and labor-saving apparatus for lowering vegetables such as potato chips into heated oil, raising them when dipping is completed and providing a means to swlng them clear of the dipping kettle so that they can be lowered into a drier, not shown, or removed from the apparatus while it is swung from its position over .the heated-oil. By using a crossarm with two carriers, one can be dipped while the other is lowered into a drier, not shown, on the opposite side of the supporting column.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical cross sectional view of the apparatus, dotted lines indicating a raised portion of part thereof.
Fig. 2 is a side View of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the dotted lines indicating a raised position of the parts.
Referring to the drawings, a metal supporting column 1 with the oven legs 2 are olted to any suitable table, bench or standard 3. Within the supporting column 1 slides a vertical shaft 4 having a cross-arm 5 with a hook at either end rotatably mounted at its top, while at the bottom of this vertical shaft 4 is fastened a block @which moves with the shaft sliding in the slot 7 in the supporting column 1. The vertical shaft 4 is prevented from lateral movement by supporting bearings at the top and middle of the column 1, which allows the shaft to be rotated yor raised and lowered in a vertical position only.
A buffer spring 8 is interposed'between Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 9ct. 25, 1921.
1919. Serial N0. 313,722.
TheV cross arm 5 being mounted on the vertical shaft, when the carriers are in a raised position, they may be swung about at will. These carriers 9 may be constructed of any suitable material preferably perforated metal or Wire mesh, which allows the oil to drain therefrom. They are supported and held in position bytwo metallic bands which are bent to form V-shaped legs for the carrier at the bottom and crossed above the carrier Where an eye-bolt is secured, furnishing a means by which the carrier may be hooked upon the cross-arm 5. A carrier' being hooked on either end of the cross-arm, besides furnishing double action to the apparatus, gives a balancing effect to the cross arm and makes it easier of operation.
To the block 6 is attached the lower end of the lever' arm 12, the upper end being fastened to the crank lever 13 near the handle 14. The crank lever 13 is pivoted at 15 in a bearing in the supporting column 1. At the opposite end of the crank lever from the handle at 18 is attached a counterbalance Spring 16, which is anchored to the oven lstandard at 17, and assists in turning crank lever when carriers are to be raised and also assists in preventing them to lower too suddenly in dipping.
In Fig. 2, the apparatus is shown in a ralsed and lowered position.
By turning the handle 14 in a counterclockwise manner, from a lowered position,
`the crank lever assisted by the counterbalance spring 16 which is under tension, pulls up the lever arm 12 which being connected to the vertical shaft 4 raises the shaft together with the cross arm to the dotted line v position as shown. The lever arm 12 has a A ball bearing 2O is interposed under the- `cross arm to reduce friction in operation.
I claim'as my invention:
1.-An apparatus of the class described, the combination with a container for heated liquid, of a carrier for material to be treated therein, a central supporting member, of a shaft slidably fitted in the supporting member, a cross arm rotatably mounted on the shaft to support thel carrier, of a lever arm connectedy to the lower endv of the sliding shaft, and a crank lever and counterbalancing spring. mechanism connected to the lever arm, whereby the shaft is caused to slide in the supporting member, causing the carrier to be lowered into the liquid and raised therefrom.
2. An apparatus of the class described, the combination with a container for heated liquid, of a detachable carrier for material to be treated therein, a central supporting member, of a shaft slidably itted'in the supporting member, a cross arm arrangement rotatably mounted on the shaft supporting the carrier, of a lever arm connected to the lower end of the shaft and a crank lever fitted with a handle and a counterbalancing spring connected with ,the lever arm whereby the `shaft is caused. to'slide in the central Supporting member causing the cross arm carrier to be raised orlowered.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combinationvwith a container -for heated liquid, of a carrier for material to be treated, a central supporting shaft member, a shaft slidably mounted therein, an arm rotatably ,mounted on the shaft to support the carrier, leverage mechanism connected tol said sliding shaft, counterbalancing mechanism associated with said leverage mechanism, the arrangement being such that the shaft maybe caused to slide in the supporting member and causing the carrier to be lowered into the container and raised therefrom or rotated out of position above the container.
4. In an apparatus for treating vegetables,
the combination with a container for heated liquid, of carriers adapted to be lowered' into and raised out of said container, a rotatable supporting member, means for vertically reciprocating the carrier relative to the supporting member and including a supporting arm leverage mechanism and counter-balancing spring members. l
5. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a container for heated, liquid, of duplicate carriers for material to be treated, a central support member having a rotatable slidable shaft mounted therewith, transverse arms attached to said rotatable shaft, leverage mechanism for -raising and lowering the carriers into and out ofthe liquid container, the rotatable shaft being operable to interchange the position ofsaid carriers wheny in a raised position. v
6. In an apparatus for treating vegetables, the combination with a containery for heated liquid, of a rotatable cross arm arrangement pivoted on a slidable vertical shaft member and out of the container and rotatable to interchange the position of the carriers.
operable to lower and raisethe carriers in Y 7. In an apparatus for treating vegetables,
the combination with a container for heated" liquid, of receptacles for holding the vegetables carried vby cross arms pivoted on a slidable vertical shaft, leverage mechanism for operating said shaft vertically to lower and raise the receptacles in and out of the liquid containers, said receptacles interchangeable with the -rotation of the shaft.
