Be it known that I, HENRY A. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwood, in the county of Rawlins and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Dumps for Grain- Elevators and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in dumps for grain elevators and the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means coacting with the dump to separate from the grain as the same is discharged within the dump any articles or material which would have a tendency to affect the operation of the elevator proper or to injure the mechanism thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved means whereby the entrance or receiving end of the dump is provided with a separating or screening element through which grain is adapted to readily pass and which element or screen serves to separate from the grain any articles of a material size which may be discharged into the dump as from a vehicle.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved dump whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, D denotes a dump of a conventional character for use in connection with a grain elevator or the like and which dump has disposed thereabove a flooring F providing a driveway and which flooring is supported in desired position by the joists l. The driveway or flooring F above the central portion of the dump or at a point otherwise preferred is provided with an opening 2 adapted to be normally closed by the door 3 of a conventional character.
Disposed within the dump D and at substantially the center of the opening 2 is an upstanding dividing wall 4. Hingedly connected with the upper edge of the wall 4 is the dividing door 5 which is adapted to be swung to a position to either side of said wall 4 as the requirements of practice may prefer, the upper portion of said door 5 having contact with the ends of the joists l to maintain the same in desired position.
Bridging the upper edge of the dividing wall 4 are the spaced straps or members 6, the opposite end portions of each of said members being provided with the upwardly facing hooks 7 and 7'. The hook 7 is removable or detachable from the member or strap 6 in order that the application of the memben or strap into applied or working position may be facilitated.
G denotes a grid or'grate comprising a frame 8 with opposed members of said frame connected by the spaced bars 9, adjacent bars being in close proximity one to the other. A grid or grate G is arranged at each side of the dividing wall 4 and the lower portion of the frame is supported by the hook member 7 or 7 while the opposite or upper end portion of said gridor grate G has contact with the ends of the joists 1 at the same side of the wall 4.
By this means a grid or grate G intersects the space at each side of the wall 4 so that as the grain is discharged within the dump, as from a vehicle, through the opening 2, the grain will readily pass through a grid or grate G but said grid or grate will separate from the falling grain any articles which may have been placed upon the load and not removed, such as a coat, shovel, plowshare, or other article which the driver of the vehicle may have placed on top of his v the desired installation, the end portions ofv load and neglected to remove before discharging the load into the dump D. The grid or grate G also serves to separate from the falling grain any ears or the like which may be contained in the load.
This separating of the materially large articles from the grainas falling within the dump is of material advantage as the obstruction or hindrance to the operation of the elevator with possible resultant injury to the mechanism by such materially large articles is prevented and the recovery of the desired articles materially facilitated.

For this reason. means must be employed for positively supporting the upper portion of the grid G. is is particularly illustrated in Fig. 4i, this positive supporting means comprises one or more lag screws 10 engaged within the inclined faces of the joists 1 and which have their outer end portions terminating in the upstanding extensions 11. G is in applied position, an end cross bar 12 thereof is engaged over the one or more lag screws 10 as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 4;, the upstanding extension 11 of the lag screw preventing said bar 12 from being accidentally disengaged therefrom.
' The grid G as herein disclosed comprises in addition to the cross bar 12, a second cross bar l t to which are permanently secured the extremities of the bars 9 The bar 12 has disposed therethrough the shanks 15, each provided with a hook extremity 16 to engage a bar 9*. Coacting with each of the shanks 15 is a clamping nut 17. By this arrangement, the bar 12 may be adjusted lengthwise of the bar 9 in accordance with the length of the dump openings. After the bar 12 has been properly adjusted to effect the bars 9- extending beyond the bar 12 are cut off.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a dump for grain elevators and the like constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it be assembled and operated, and it will also be hen the grid obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to'be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the sev eral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1 claim:
1. In combination with a grain dump having a top opening, a dividing wall within the dump terminating below the top thereof, oppositely directed hook members carried by the upper portion of the dividing wall, and grid members bridging the space between the upper portion of the dividing wall and the ends of the top opening of the dump, the lower marginal portions of the grid members being engaged with the hook members.
2. In combination with a grain dump having a top opening, a dividing wall within the dump terminating below the top thereof, spaced members bridging the upper portion of the dividing wall, the opposite end portions of said members being provided with upwardly facing hook members, and grid members bridging the space between the upper portion of the dividing wall and the ends of the top opening of the dump, the lower marginal portions of the grid members being engaged with the hook members.
In combination with a grain dump having a top opening. a dividing wall within the dump terminating below the top thereof, oppositely directed hook members carried by the upper portion of the dividing wall, grid members bridging the space between the upper portion of the dividing wall and the ends of the top opening of the dump, the lower marginal portions of the grid members being engaged with the hook members, and means at the top opening coacting with the grid members for positively holding said portionof the grid members in applied position. 7 I
