ATTACHER FUR BUTTON FASTENERS.

ATTACHER FOR BUTTON-FASTENERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed December 19, 19.19. Serial No. 346,005.
To all whom t m ay concern Be it known that I, HARRY H. DANIELs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Winthrop, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth 0f' Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Attachers for Button-Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing` like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to means for attaching and clamping buttons and the like to a material piece or body to which they are to be secured. While having other and more general fields of usefulness the invention is well adapted and designed for securing a fastener button to a iexible sheet such as an automobile curtain or the like, a particular form of such a fastener button being shown and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 346,004, filed December 19, 1919. A principal object of the invention is to provide a simple andv inexpensive y-et highly efficient and reliable means of securing and clamping a button or the like to a curtain orA other member. A further object is to provide an attaching device that permits the button to be instantly and most conveniently clamped in assembled relation with the curtain, the improved means provided being of a character to strongly clamp and hold the buttonin place by a frictional engagement over a substantial area of the curtain and without requiring any penetrating prongs or the like which would be apt to tear or mutilate the curtain. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a button base embodying the invention and shown applied to a curtain or the like;
Fig. 2 is a diametrical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the top portion of the body being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a similar diametrical sectionon line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4.- is an enlarged diametrical section showing an illustrative form of a complete fastener button and socket therefor, with the button base clamped to the curtain by the improved device of my invention.
10 indicates a ring disk adapted to be applied to the under side of a curtain C, or like material piece. This ring may be equipped with penetrating points 10a to prevent relative turning thereof with respect. to the curtain. The central portion of this ring is formed with a flange collar 11 that is adapted to be passed through'a hole therefor in the curtain and to project some little distance from the upper side thereof. 12 indicates the button base which in accordance with my invention consists in a ring 12a having a series, shown as four, of sprlno arms 12a projecting radially inward therefrom and terminating at equal and predetermined distances from the center of the ring, which distance is very slightly greater than the external diameter of the flange collar 11. The inner extremities of these prongs are preferably curved so as to fit as closely as may be the circular section of the collar 11, it being of course understood that this circular section is a merely illustrative and preferred form. The ring 12 may also be provided intermediate the prongs 12a with turned-down points 12b adapted to penetrate slightly into the material as the ring is pressed into place, these points being merely to prevent the ring from turning and the use thereof being, like the use of the points 10a, optional. In other words in cases where it is desired to avoid the use of any penetrating points whatever, the device may be assembled and clamped to the cur tain as now to be explained, without such penetrating points. In assembling the device in place the ring 12 is applied to the curtain opposite the ring disk 10 and the collar 11 is forcibly pressed through the opening between the inner ends of the prongs 12, springing and bending these prongs slightly outward and upward. The ring 12 and the ring disk 10 are thus pressed from opposite sides of the material to closely and tightly clamp the same and the prongs 12a pressing closely against the collar 11 will prevent any relative loosening or giving backward of the button base 12. The button borne by the base 12 may be of any preferred character, but as herein shown this consists in a housing 13 in which is fitted a slidable stud 14 having a projecting head 15 and a flange 16 limiting the outward movement of said head. This housing may be secured to the base 12 in suitable manner, as by having a plurality of prongs 13a .depending therefrom passed through holes'therefor in the base andturned inward as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A compression spring 17 fitted on the `stud presses against the flange 16 to normally hold the stud at an outward limit of movement, this spring reacting against a flange collar 18. secured to the disk 10. The inner end of the stud 14 is adapted to be pressed into a self-clamping socket composed of a shallow housing 19 in which is fixed a ring 2O 'having inwardly projecting, radial prongs 20a which are adapted to engage the stud and lock the same against removal by a binding action similar to `that already described with respect to the prongs 12a. These prongs 20a may however be pressed out of binding engagement with the stud to release the button at will by engagement of the flange collar 18 therewith,this being accomplish-ed by pressing inward 0n the body or housing 13 of the button, these features being however more fully described and claimed in my said copending application. I am awareV that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing-from the spiritor essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described myV invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.V An attacher for a button base, comprising clamping members for engaging opposite sides of a materialpiece,v one thereof having ar projection through said material piece, and the other thereof having means permitting said projection to be passed freely therethrough to operative position and' adapted for automatic self-binding engagement with said projection as said members are pressed into assembled relation.
2. An attacher for a button base, comprising clamping members for engaging opposide sides of a material piece, one thereof havingA a projection through said material piece, and the other thereof having a movable part permitting said projection to be passed freely therethrough to operative position and self-engageable for wedging action withsaid projection as said members are placed into assembled relation, to hold them from disengagement.
3. An attacher for a button base or the like, comprising clamping'members ,for engaging opposite sides of a material piece, one thereof having'a projection through said piece.v and the other thereof having a plurality of inwardly extending prongs arranged to permit said projection to be pressed freely therethrough to its operative position and adaptedto engage said projection as it is pressed therethrough for auto-V matic self-clamping action with respect thereto to prevent disengagement of said members. Y
V4. An attacher fora button base, comprising clamping rings for engaging opposite sides of a curtain or the like, Vone thereof having a projection through said curtain, and the other having a plurality of spaced apart spring prongs extending radially in, ward therefrom, and adapted to have said projection pressed between the' extremities thereof to spring said prongs outward and exert a self-binding clamping action with respect to said projection to hold said members interengaged.
5. An attacher for a button base or the like, comprising clamping rings for engaging opposite sides of a curtain or the like,
one thereof having a flange collar Vprojecting through the curtain, and the other thereof having radially extending spring prongs adapted to receive said collar between them and be pressed outward thereby so `as to exert a self-binding clamp thereon, and a button housing mounted on 'they last named member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
