Description

L. W. WRIGHT.
VEHICLE. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 18. 1919.
1,393,876. Patented Oct.- 13,1921.
[NI/ENTOR LUCY W. WRIGHT, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
VEHICLE.
Application filed October 18, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCY W. VVRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Elkhart, county of Elkhart, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vehicles and especially to package carrying vehicles, although not necessarily limited to the latter.
An object of my invention is the production of a device for carrying articles of various kinds, or packages of limited size, in which one hand of the operator may be employed for handling the vehicle. Another object is the provision of an improved form of removable container for a vehicle of the character described. Other objects of my invention are mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the vehicle; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in elevation of the foot or leg as indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a section taken through the frame and container taken on the line 4.4: of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like members throughout the several views on the drawing on which the numeral 1 indicates a frame or reach member which may be provided with a fork 2 at its forward end and within which fork a wheel 3 is mounted for rotation. The frame or reach 1 may consist of a single piece of metal, or other suitable material, formed with a depending saddle portion 4 intermediate the handle 5 and the portion 6, the latter being directly connected with the fork 2. The
reach member 1, exclusive of the fork 2, but including the saddle 4 and the handle 5, is disposed in the plane of the wheel 3.
The handle 5 preferably lies in a plane above the frame portion 6 and the saddle 4 to enable a pedestrian to readily grasp said handle for supporting the vehicle and pro pelling it from the operators side. The saddle portion of the frame 1 may include the two upright members 7 and 8 upon the lower end of the latter of which the spreading feet members 9 and 10 may be mounted, said feet members being adapted to support the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 331,569.
vehicle in an upright position when it is at rest.
The numeral 11 indicates a container or receptacle which may be open at its top to receive articles, or packages, or material of any kind, for carriage, and which may be made of metal or any other suitable material. The exterior of the container body may be provided with the guide channels 12 and 13 on opposite sides thereof by securing thereto two pairs of spaced upright angle irons 1 1 and 1.5 in opposed relation. When thus provided with the channels 12 and 13 the container 11 may be readily slid into the saddle 4 or removed therefrom by grasping the container handles 16, 16 disposed on opposite sides thereof, the saddle members 7 and 8 being engaged by the container channels 12 and 13 when so mounted thereon which prevents lateral displacement of said container, the container bottom resting upon the saddle bottom member. The channels 12 and 13 are preferably arranged in line with the center of gravity of the con tainer so as to support the same in balanced position in the saddle.
In operation, the container 11 being disposed below the plane of the handle 5 the former always hangs vertically in balance and is spaced above the ground or base upon which the operator may be traveling, the vehicle being easily supported and propelled by one hand of the operator.
I claim:
1. In a vehicle, the combination with a wheel, of a reach mounted on said wheel and having a depending saddle disposed in the plane of the wheel, a handle on said reach, and a container carried by said saddle.
2. In a vehicle, the combination with a wheel, of a reach mounted on said wheel and having a depending saddle disposed in the plane of the wheel, a handle on said reach, and a container removably mounted in said saddle.
3. In a vehicle, the combination with a wheel, of a reach mounted on said wheel and having a depending saddle disposed in the plane of the wheel, a handle on said reach, a container mounted in said saddle, and means on the container to support the same in balanced position in the saddle.
4. In a vehicle, the combination with a wheel,'of a reach mounted on said wheel and having a depending saddle disposed in the plane of the wheel, a handle on said reach, and a container having vertical channels to removably engage the side portions of said saddle.
5. In a vehicle, the combination with a heel, of a reach mounted on said wheel and having a depending saddle disposed in the plane of the wheel, a handle on said reach,
10 and a container having vertical channels to removably engage the side portions of said saddle, said channels being arranged in line with the center of gravity of the'container for supporting the same in balanced posi tion in the saddle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afiiXed my signature this 16th day of October, 1919.
LUCY w. WRIGHT.
