Dnmsnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Punch-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof theihvention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to-make and use the same.
he invention aims for safety in the op,- eration of punch presses and analogous machines and to prevent injury to the operator or attendant by the premature operation of the machine.
In accordance with the invention a guard is provided and operatively connected with the movable part of the machine to be actuated thereby when the machine is in operation to push the hand of the attendant out of the way and avoid injury thereto, should the hand not be withdrawn because of premature movement of the machine, inadvertence or from other cause.

While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the'invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet difierent conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

The attachment comprises a bracket which includes arms 3 and a cross piece 4- The cross piece has a longitudinal slot 5. In safety means of the character specified, a slotted cross piece, a headed pivot adjustable in theslot of the cross piece, a flanged sleeve nut on the pivot having the cross piece clamped between. the pivot head and the nut flange, a gear wheel loose on .the nut, a rack bar in mesh withthe gear wheel, a yoke loose on the nut and having interlocking engagement with the gear wheel, a sweep carried by the yoke and a guide loosely mounted on said sleeve nut and in engagement with the rack bar to maintain the same in proper working position.
3. In safety means of the. character speci= fied, a bracket comprising a slotted cross piece, a pivot member adjustable in the slots of the cross piece, a gear wheel on the pivot member, a sweep operatively connected with the gear wheel, a rack bar in meshing engagement with the gear wheel, and guide means mounted on said pivot member to direct the rack bar in its movement and maintain it in proper working position.
4. Safety means of the character specified comprising a slotted bracket, a pivot member adjustable in the slots of the bracket, a gear wheel mounted on the pivot member, a cross head loose on the pivot member and having interlocking engagement with the gear wheel, a sweep having adjustable connection with .the cross head, a rack bar in engagement with the gear wheel, and a guide mounted on said pivot member and in engagement with the rack bar for directing the same in its movement and retaining it in proper working position.
