Description

F. W. BERGER.
NECK YOKE FASTENER. APPLICATION HLED MAYZI I919- Patented 00%. M, W21.

wearer.- l p jAippl ication'filed May 21,
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Beit known that l, FRANK W. BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willow Lakes, in the county of can; and State. of South Dakota, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Neck- Yoke Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the general class of carriages and wagons, particularly to neck-yoke securing means, and has for its object the provision of such means whereby a neck-yoke may be quickly and easily con-' nected with or detached from the pole or tongue of a wagon or carriage or other vehicle or implement, such as reapers, binders, mowers, plows, rakes and the like.
An important object is the provision of neck-yoke securing means which will operate to hold the necleyolre more and more firmly in proportion to the pulling strain exerted thereon and on the pole or tongue but which will permit ready disengagement of the neck-yoke from the pole or tongue upon reverse or rearward movement of the neck-yoke.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and ad-' vantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in position upon a pole or tongue and engaged by a neck-yoke,
Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the device in releasing position,
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, and Fig. 4- is a detail cross-sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a pole or tongue and B designates a neck-yoke having an attaching ring C.
Secured upon the tongueis a metallic member including a portion 10 secured upon the top of the tongue and a portion 11 secured upon the under side of the tongue, these portions being connected by a curved bight 12 spaced from the end of the tongue. Intermediate its ends, the-portion 11 is profipecif eation of Letters 1919. serial no. 298,741. 1
vided with an extension 13 wardly fromthe tongue.
isposed beneath the tongue is a member 143 formed of somewhat resilient material which includes a portion 15*secured against the-underside of the tongue by U bolts 16 and which is reflexly bent to provide a portion 17 extending forwardly of and in spaced relation to the tongue beyond the extension 13. At its forward end the portion 1'2 is curved, as shown at 18, to extend upwardly into engagement with the tongue and has formed thereon a forwardly extending handle 19 spaced beneath the end portion of the tongue. Formed at the juncture of the handle 19 with the upwardly extending portion 18 is a rearwardly extending lip 20 which terminates adjacent the front of the extension 13 and which is curved to practically merge into the under side of the tongue. The resilience of the member 14 is such that-the lip 20 will be held against the tongue.
In the use of the device, the operator grasps the handle 19 and presses downwardly thereon whereupon the portion 17 of the member 14c will be sprung downwardly so that the lip 20 will be spaced from the tongue. The neck-yoke B is then attached to the tongue by slipping the ring C over the metallic member secured at the end of the extending downtongue until the ring passes between the tongue and the lip 20 and engages against the extension 13. The operator then releases the handle 19. When a forward pull is subsequently exerted upon the neck-yoke B the ring C will engage the lip 20 and be prevented thereby from being disconnected from the tongue. To detach the neck-yoke the handle 19 is moved downwardly and the ring C slipped off from the tongue.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided extremely simple and readily operable means whereby a neckyoke may be attached to or detached from a wagon tongue, the construction being such that the greater the forward pull upon the neck-yoke the greater will be the holding power of the means holding the neck-yoke.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construe tion, and arrangement of parts as will not Patented @ct. ii, ieai.
depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined claims.
i parallel Iclaim: c
In combination with a draft pole or tongue and neck-yoke, a neck-yoke fastener comprising a metallic member secured upon the end of the pole or tongue and having a "downwardly extending projection spaced from the end thereof, a resilient member secured upon thepole or tongue and extending'along the underside thereof in spaced relation thereto and engaging against the end of-said projection, the forward end of said resilient member being curved upwardly and rearwardly to define of the neck-yoke when a forward pull is e erted and said projection being engaged by the ring when a rearward pull is exerted upon the neck-yoke.
, In testimony whereof I hereto afiix my signature.
FRANK W. BERGER.
