GEARED TURBINE SYSTEFH.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. til, 1119211.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES ALenRNoN PARsoNs, STANLEY SMITH 000K, and Louis MORTIMER DoUoLAs, all subjects of the King of Great Britain, residents of Heaton Works, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the county of Northumberland, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Geared Turbine Systems, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to geared turbine systems in which one or more turbines transmit power through helical gear trains.
lit has already been proposed in specification Serial No. 260552 filed October 31, 1918, that the steam thrust of a turbine or turbines shall be carried by double helical gears which the turbine operates. in many cases, however, it is necessary to provide balancing pistons in the turbine in order to reduce the steam thrust to such an amount as can be carried by the gears.
lit has also been proposed to construct a geared turbine installation in which the turbine drives through single reduction gearing, part of the steam thrust being taken up by the gears and part by a pivoted thrust block which controls the longitudinal position of the turbine rotor. V
The object of the present invention is to construct the installation in such a manner that the necessity for balancing pistons is avoided.
The invention consists in a double reduction geared turbine installation in which the steam thrust of the turbine is partly taken up by a single helical pinion engaging with a single helical wheel and partly by a thrust block, the end thrust of the intermediate shaft being taken up by double helical pinions and gear wheels in which the two parts are constructed of diflerent widths or with helices inclined at different angles.
The invention further consists in the improved geared turbine installation hereinafter described.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows an arrangement in which double secondary helical wheels of different widths are employed.
Fig. 2 shows a modification of the arrangement in Fig. 1.
to balance wholly or partly the steam pressures, excess of end thrust being taken by the thrust blocks T, T, which are advantageously of the plvoted type. The pinions B, mesh with wheels C on the intermediate shafts l), and it will be seen that the forces on the teeth of the wheel C will produce an axial thrust on the intermediate shaft D. On the shaft D are secondary pinions E and E, which meshwith secondary wheels F and F mounted on the propeller shaft G. in order that the intermediate shaft 10' may be in equilibrium, the longitudinal force on the pinion E must be greater than that of the pinion E,, by the amount of longitudinal force contributed by the wheel C. The pinions ]E and wheel F are therefore made broader than the pinions E and wheel F, so that the pressures may be uniformly distributed on the teeth.
Variations may be made in the disposition of the turbines or other gearing. For instance, Fig. 2 shows an arrangement enibodying the same principles as Fig. 1, but in this case there are three turbines in series and both halvesof the secondary gears are shown on the side of the primary gears remote from the turbines.
In a further modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, which is illustrated in Fig. 5, the secondary pinions and wheels E, E, and F, F are made of equal breadth but have teeth out at different angles so that while the component forces in the longitudinal direction on the teeth of the pinions B may be greater than in that of the pinions E the components in the transverse direction, namely, the turning forces may be the same for both wheels F and F Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the C.
