Am or MAKING TYPE AND TYPE-HOLDERS.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
mantra Oct. ilil, i921.
Application filed March 9, 1921. SerialNo. 450,820.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, CARY A. NEYLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in Spokane county, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and Art of Mak- My present invention relates to improvements in the art of making type and type holders adapted especially for use in producing-dies for alphabets or fonts of small letters, and other comparatively small characters and designs, to be employed for im- 15 pressing the desired design in or on the surface of semi-solids, or on other articles.
The invention involves essentially a type holder or slotted block, a metal strip or rule conforming to the pattern of the slot in the block and providing the printing or impression face of the type or design, a filler piece for retaining the rule in the slotted block, and in other details of constructions and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The completed articleof the invention is adapted for use as a stencil die, and may be which, when placed in the press, is utilized for reproduc- In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention in which the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder with type therein, forming a stencil die made according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge, view of the stencil die, partly broken away in section to disclose the manner of securing the metal strip or rule forming the type within the holder.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing one end 'of the veneer block forming part of the holder and type.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing one end of the metal strip or rule employed in the formation of the type.
As an exemplification of my invention I have illustrated in the drawings the usual veneer block 1 made up of laminated wood, similar to the blocks which form the base for an i p nt g r g a aaed p n the upper face Or surface of the block is traced the design, letters or other characters for reproduction in the form of adie or stencil. The present invention relates to the production ofsmall or comparatively small designs or characters, although the capital letters of a font or alphabet are shown in the drawings. i
In preparing the type and holder, a slot 2 is out, sawed, or otherwise produced in the block 1 as indicated in Fig. 3 where the letter Z is illustrated, suitable and facile tools being employed for the purpose, and the outline traced on the surface of the block is followed in cutting out the letter or character. The slot extends entirely through the block with openings at both the upper and lower faces of the block, and the slot conforms to the pattern, whether a letter, design, character, border, or other figure to be reproduced. The outline of the type or characters is furnished by means of metal strips or rules 3 having sharpened cutting edges 4:, and these strips, preferably of soft iron orsteel that will readily be bent are placed within the slots out in the wood for the purpose. Each rule is a single piece of suflicient length to extend around the border of the slot in which it is to be used, and the metal strip is forced andbent into the slot with its outer face in contact with the walls of the slot, and the rule conforms to the outline of the slot, as for instance that required for the letter Z in Fig. 3.
After the rule has been bent and forced into position, a tiller 5 is provided, which may consist of lead wool, or similar material that is capable of being tamped or packed tightly and closely within the space between the walls of the rule forming the design, to
form a rigid compact brace for maintaining the rule in position for printing.
The rule is of sufiicient length to extend entirely around the walls of the slot and is of sufiicient width to extend through the slotted block with its lower edges 6 flush with the lower face of the block, and its cutting edge 7 projecting beyond the upper face of the block to form the type indicated as 7.
In the production of small characters or F ig. l are made by the utilization of the required form of slot and these slots are made in manner similar to the Z slot of Fig. 3.
It Will readily be apparent that the type and holder of Fig. 1 may comprise associated letters to form names, words, or other combinations, and the holder with its type therein may be locked in the usual printers form,
placed in the press, and stencils reproduced therefrom in usual manner.
Because of the comparatively small expense in time, labor, and material in manufacturing these dies, they may be frequently replaced and discarded without material loss. The dies may be produced in quantities with rapidity and accuracy, and the completed article utilized to perform its required functions With customary efliciency.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to Letters Patent isl. The combination in a (lie of a holder having a slot therein, a rule conforming to the walls of and in frictional contact with said holder in the slot, and a filling of: loose material packed in said slot within the rule between the upper and lower faces of said holder.
2. The combination in a die, of a holder having slots therein of various forms, a rule located in each slot, conforming thereto and in frictional contact with the walls of the slot, and a filling of lead wool packed in each said slot within its rule, between the upper and lower :i'aces of the holder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CARY A. NE YLAND.
