' App1lcation filed February 18, 1920. Serial No. 359,500.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. SAUER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of ochester, in the county of Monroe and tate of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Lifting Jacks, of which the following is a specification. v v
The present invention relates to'lifting jacks, and an object thereofis to provide a lifting jack which has strength and durability and at. the same time a maximum amount of power Another object of the of the invention is to provide a. lifting jack whichmay be operated from the'rear thereof To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novelvfeatures being pointed out in the appended claims.
In, the drawings in elevated position;
Fig. 2 is a central Vertical section of such jack in the position shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the jack in lowered position; v t V Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view of the connection between the 'base and the lower links of one of the toggles Fig; 5 is a fragmentary detail view of a.
knuckle of a toggle of the rough adjusting Fig. 6 is-a detail view of the connection between the lifting member and one of its to gles;
igs. 7 and 8 are detail vlews of the connection between two of the weighted'pawls;
' Figs. 9 and 10 are detail views of the operating' member for the jack; and
Fig. 11 is adetail view of the ratchet.-
In the illustrated embodiment of the in- ,vention there is-provided a lifting bar formed in this instance of two. pieces of. angle iron 1 connected together by tie pieces 1', each having oneof its flanges disposed outwardly and horizontallyand supporting a casting 2 preferably formed with intersecttogether by tie pieces 7.
vrnember may be provided with a mg a squared socket in which a wrench may mg ll-shaped notches 3 and-4, the casting 2 being preferably detachably secured at 5 to the flangesby bolts, dowel. pins or other means. This bar is, in this instance, adjustably supported on a supporting framecompr1s1ng preferably two plates 6 connected Patented oct. 11, rear..-
v The adjusting meansfor moving the lifting member relatively frame in the illustrated embodiment compr ses a-pa-ir of togglesL, each toggle being formed of two pairs of links, the lower links 8 ;of each toggle being pivotally mounted on pivotirods -9 connecting-theplates 6, while to the supportingthe upper links 10 of each toggle are pivotally} mountedon pivot rods '11 connecting the angle irons l and held thereon by nuts 11. The links 8 and-10 of each toggle are preferablypivotally connected to aknuckle fin 12 on which the links are held by nuts 13. ovement of the toggles may beeifected by an adjusting shaft 14, which may have right and lefthand threaded portions 15 and 16 engaging in screw threaded openings formed 1n the knuckle pins and'rotation'of this screw in one direction breaks the toggles by moving them toward each other, thus lowering 'the lifting bar,
. while movement of the screw in the other Figure 1 is an end view section of the jack direction expands the toggles and elevates the lifting bar. Oneend Of theadjusting head 17chavbe fitted in line with the adjusting'member.
To the end that the wrench may be used at right angles to the adjusting member, a socket member 18 may be provided having sockets in opposite faces thereof, and rotatable" in bearings. 19 about an axisat right angles to the axis of the adjusting member 14:. This socket member is, 1n this instance, formed with a worm face 20 which cooperates with a worm face 21 on the socketed head 17 of the adjusting member 1a; The
12 of the two toggles,
-spacer '35 is also provided on the pivot 'rod 33"between the two pairs of links 26,.and-
In order to sebure the intermediate frame 36 are provided, said pawls being pivoted at i 37 on lugs 38 which-are projected inwardly from the links 26, each [pawl being pivoted to-both members of each pair of links 26 and 'opera ting between such members so as to oooperate withr'atchet teeth 39 formed on the spacers 34, such spacers 34 being keyed to the pivot pins 33 and said pivot pins in turn being keyed-to the links 30. Each pawl is provided with a weight 40, which normally tends to hold such pawl'in cooperation with. its ratchet-39 so that, as the intermediate frame formed by the ;pl ate 6 is raised, the
pawl will automaticallylock the intermedi-.
'ate framein its raised position. Release of the pawls may be secured by chains 41 which.
are connected at 42 to a tie-piece 7,b etween the plates '6 and which have their othenends connected with yokes 43 and 43?, each of said yokes connecting two of the weights 40.
I I 'Thevopposite weights 40 are offset so that they may lie one beside the other when the jack is folded. Link 44 may be provided on the connections 41 for attachment'to' books 45 arranged on the inner faces of the strips I 6 to'hold said weights in positions where the pawls ..36 will the ratchets 39."
The operation-of the screw 14 may be efbe out .of cooperation with of four fected by an operating tool comprising, in 'thi instance, an extensible stemyformed of a plurality of telescoping sections 46, connection between the sections'being provided by forming longitudinal {slots 47 and inwardly turned lugs 48 on some of the sections, the lugs extendinginto said slgts and permitting the relative longitudinal movevment of the sections, while preventing rela- In the use of the jack, the latter is firstop'erated to bring the lifting bar or member as closeas possible to the intermediate support formed by the plates 6, while the intermediate support is brought as closely as possible to the base 24. The ack is placed beneath the part torbe elevated, and the intermediate support formed by the plate 6 is raised until the lifting bar engages with the part to be elevated, at which time the pawls 36 will lock the rough adjusting mechanism in: its adjusting osition. The operating tool illustrated in *igs. 9 and 10 isv then connected to the socket member 18 permitting the or to the socket member 17, depending on which is most conveniently reached, and the screw 14 is turned to elevate the lifting bar and the part engaged thereby until the desired elevation has been reached. In lowering the jack, the screw 14 may be turned or the jack may be lowered quickly by disengaging the pawls 36 with the ratchets 39.
From the'foregoing it will be seen that \there has been provided a liftin jack formed with a rdugh adjustiiig mec anism and a power adjustment. The rough ad-- justment may be quickly obtained, while the power adjustment gives great power. Both the adjusting mechanisms are sim la in operatlon and have great durability and strength. Provision is made by which the "jaizk may be operated from any 'side.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure byLettersPatent 'is: Q
