Tov all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR FISCHER, a
citizen of the German Empire residing at Berlin-Wilmersdorf, in the Kingdom of Prussia Germany, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in Typewritin -Machines; and I do hereby declare the i0 lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
" and throw' My invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines, and more particularly in typewriting machines in which the type carrier consists of a rotary type wheel having the types arranged about its circumference, and in'which kc controlledelectromagnets are provided or rotating the type wheel with one of the types in printing position and throwing the same against the platen, and also if desired for shifting the carriage for letter spacing. For this purpose -by depressing the key levers electric contacts are made by means of which the circuits including the electroma nets for rotating and throwing the type w eel are closed. One of the objects of the improvements is to so construct the key lever mechanism and the electric rotating and throwing means, that the machine can be operated at high speed. A further object of the improvements is to regulate the rotary and throwing movements of the type wheel in such a way,
that the characters printed by the type wheel are not blurred and are perfectly clear. With these and other objects in view my invention consists in so constructing the key lever mechanism and the electrical rotating means, that all the operations of the machine, which in machines of ordinary construction are performed by the downward and upward strokes of the key levers, are performed by the downward stroke of the key levers, so that it 1s not necessary to release a depressed key lever before another one is depressed. Furthermore my invention consists in so constructing the contact making devices for the rotating and throwing electromagnets, that by depressing a key lever the rotating and throwing electromagnets are successivelythrown mto operation, while they are simultaneously thrown out of operation.
By thus constructing the typewriting machine the operation is made convenient, the fingers, which in machines of ordinary construction are moved from one key 'to the other. one, can rest on the keys. In the operation of the machine the weight of the hand isalternately shifted from one finger to another one, and instead of moving the hand'from one key to the other one in my improved machine only slight movements are necessary which are performed exclu-- sively by the fingers, and which can be performed at greater speed and with less strain, and which are performed with great accuracyeven if the writers eye is not directed to the keys, because the fingers are always placed on the same keys.
In constructing a typewriting machine of this kind it is necessary that the electromagnets remain energized until the type wheel has struck the platen. If the energizing circuit were interrupted before this moment, the type wheel would begin its rotary return movement prior to printing the desired character, or the type wheel would not come into contact with the platen, and in any case printin would not be performed with sufficient orce. However, when the type wheel strikes against the platen all the movable parts come to rest, so that the contacts can not be opened any more, because for doing this the contact breaking parts must be in motion.
' In my improved machine this difiiculty is overcome by providin intermediate members which transmit t e movement of the keys. to the contacts, and which are diSconnected from the key levers by elements controlled by the electromagnets while the keys are movin ,downward or are being depressed. ereby the contacts are moved into circuit breaking positions independently of the key levers, and the type wheel throwing or printing electromagnet is thrown into operation by closing two contacts disposed in series. One of the contacts is closed by depressing the keys and together throwing the type wheel, and also the means provided for shifting the carriage for letter spacing and the ribbon feed mechanism are returned into inoperative or normal positions immediately after printing and even if the key lever is still in depressed position. Thereby the printing electromagnet returns into initial position without any delay, the
speed of wrlting is increased, and the character which has been printed can not be blurred, which would be the case if the type wheel were rotated backward and into initial position before it is rocked away from the platen. My improved machine consumes little electric energy, because only short current impulses are necessary for operating the same.
My invention also relates to other 1mprovements all of which will hereafter be explained'in detail and partlcularly po1nted out in the appended claims.
While in describing the invention reference Will be made to a particular embodiment thereof, I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawiings, and that various features thereof may be embodied in machines of difierent types.

Fig. 17, is a planview of the parts shown in Fig. 16, and
Fig. 18, is a diagram showing the electrical connections of the machine.
Referring to the example illustrated in the drawings, my improved machine consists of a base plate 1, a medial plate '2, and a top plate 3. The top plate and the base plate are connected with each other by pillars 4. Above the top platethe carriage is mounted on suitable guide rails, and on the carriage the platen 5 is mounted in an} knownor preferred way.
The type carrier is provided by a type wheel 6 on which three sets of types are provided, and which is removably mounted on a shaft 7. Ordinarily the types ofthe'upper set are in printing position. I If it is desired toprint a sign from a type of the medial or lower set, the type'wheel is shifted. For this purpose the shaft 7 is longitudinally shiftable within a sleeve 8, rotation of the shaft relatively to the sleeve being prevented by means of a collar 11 secured to the shaft and provided with a lug 11 moving in a longitudinal slot 11 of the sleeve. Between the said collar and a bushing 10 secured to the upper end of the sleeve 8 a s" ring 9 is interposed which normally forces t e shaft 7 and the type wheel 6 downward and with the upper set of types in printing position relatively to the platen.
The shaft 7 is mounted on a rocker plate I 12 on which two pillars 13 and 14 .are mounted which are connected with each other at their upper ends by a plate 15. To the middle art of the said plate a disk 16 is secured w ich provides the upper race of a ball bearing the lower race of which is formed on the bushing 10. At its lower end the shaft 7 is formed with a reduced portion 17 which has rotary movement in a corresponding socket provided in a short bolt 18. The said bolt has longitudinal shifting movement within a sleeve 19 which is secured to the rocker plate 12 by means of a flange 20. Norfnallylongitudinal movement of the bolt '18 relatively to the sleeve 19 is prevented by means of the spring 9 acting through the shaft 7. Within a transverse bore made in the shaft 138. pin 21 is pro-- vided which projects with both ends throu h longitudinal slots 22 of the sleeve y depressing one of the shift key levers 25 or 26 the type wheel is shifted spectively in bearings 31, 32 and 33,34. The
rear ends of the key levers 25, 26 are located below pins 35, 36 secured to the rocking "frames 27 and 28 respectively. At their lower ends the links 29 and 30 are jointed to the inner arms of the frames 27 and 28 respectively, and at their upper ends they are jointed to the transverse pin 21.
The rocker plate 12 provides the armature of a printing or throwing electromagnet 37, or asshown in Figs. and 6, it is secured to the armature 38 of the said electromagnet.
The type wheel shaft 7 and the rocker plate. said pawl must be thrown into releasing are in the form of a bell crank lever which has a rocking support by means of ivots 39 and 40 mounted in bearings provi ed in i pillars 41 and 42.
- The downward stroke of the rocker plate 12 is limited by cushions 43 and 44 made from felt or some other suitable material (Figs. 5 and 6). In order that the move-- ment of therocker plate be as'noiseless as possible two further felt cushions 47 and 48 and two springs 49 and 50 are secured to the said plate. When the rocker plate is being attracted by the electromagnet 37, the springs 49 and 50 strike at first on the cushioning members 43 and 44, whereupon they are bent and get into engagement with the cushioning members 47 and 48 by means of which the strokeof the rocker plate is finally limited. In order that also the upward stroke of the rocker late be limited in a noiseless way, two inc inedsprings 51 and 52 are secured to the top face of the rocker plate, which springs are disposed in position for engagement by the cushioned inclined surfaces of adjustable stop members 53-and 54.
Before the ty e wheel strikes against the platen, and pre erably while the key levers are being depressed, the type wheel must be turned to the right or left at suchan angle, that the character or letter corresponding to the depressed key is in position exactly opposite to the printing point. This is eflected by the following mechanism: To the lower end of the sleeve 8 which incloses the type wheel shaft 7 a pinion 55 is secured which is in mesh with a toothed sector 57 having a rocking support on an axis 56. Rocking movement is imparted to the said sector by either one of two electromagnets 58 and 59 the armatu'res' 60 and 61 of which are connected by a flexible tension element such as a wire 62 and screws 64 and 65, the said tension element being also connected with the sector by the screw 63. vBy means of the electromagnet 58 left hand rockin movement is imparted to the type wheel ti w1re 62, and by thegelectromagnet 59 ri' ht hand movement is imparted thereto, an in each case both armaturesare rocked, because the are positivel connected with each other an with the toot ed sector. For returning the sectorinto medial position a spring 66 is coiled around the axis 56 whichbears with both ends'on a pin 67 secured to the rocker plate 12. To the sector a pin 68 is secured which is likewise located between the ends of the spring 66. In-order that the; type wheel be not rocked beyond its medial position after printing, the sleeve 8 is formed below the pinion 55 withv a collar 69 which is formed with a notch adapted to be engaged by a pawl 70. The
position each time before one of the armatures 60 or 61 can rock the sector 57. and the type wheel 6. The mechanism provided for this purpose will. be described hereinafter.
The rotary movement of the type wheel to the right or to the left for setting one of the types in printing position must be interrupted as soon as the type to be printed is in. printing position. In my improved machine this is done by means of a pair of sto arms 71 secured to the type wheel shaft and adapted to strike against a pin which is operated by the key lever being depressed and shifted thereby into the path of one of the stop members. It will; be
understood, that each of the key levers operates a pin of its own, and all the pins aremountedon a circle which is concentric to the type wheel shaft. Therefore each pin is ada ted to arrest the type Wheel with a particul artype of each set in rinting position. The construction of tlie stop mechanism so far described is known in machines which are provided with a type improved machine in orderl to adapt the same to a machine in which the types are provided on atype wheel having rotary movements in both directions. In a machine rough the intermediary. of thecarrying sector, and it. is modified in my 7 of this class the known mechanism can not be provided, because it would be necessary to arrange the stop members on a complete circle, in which case it would be difiicult .to connect. the same with the key levers. Therefore I have modified the construction as follows:
To the sleeve 8 which incloses the type wheel shaft7 two arms 71 are secured which coiiperate with radially disposed setting members 72 and 73. The said setting members have rocking supports on a semi-circular rod 74, and their number is equal to the number of the types provided in each set onthe type wheel and to the number of key levers corresponding thereto. When the type wheel is turned to the left the left hand arm 71 strikes against the first, third, fifth, seventh, etc. setting member 72, and when the type wheel is turned to the right the right hand arm 71 strikes against the second, fourth, sixth, etc., setting member 72. In the machine shown in the drawings the key levers of the lower series are connected with the first, third, fifth, etc., setting member, and the key levers of the upper series are connected with the second, fourth, sixth, etc., setting member. l
The connection between the key levers and the setting members is shown'in Figs. 1 and 2. As shown in the said figures, the key levers 76 are mounted on bifurcated pillars 77, and at their rear ends they are provided with sockets 79 which are engaged by the lower ends of vertical rods 78 engaging with their upper ends disks 82 of radially mounted bell crank levers 80, having rocking supports on a common' semi-circular rod 81. The vertical arms of the said bell crank levers are bifurcated and between the bifurcated portions arms 83 and springs 83 acting thereon are mounted. When depressing a key lever, the corresponding arm 83 is moved toward the shaft of the type wheel, and it rocks the cotiperating setting member 72 or 73 about its fulcrum provided by the rod 74 and into position for stopping engagement with one of the stop arms 71. In Fig. 1 the stop arm 71 is shown in rocked position.
The horizontal arms of the setting membars 72 and 73 bear on pairs of rings 84, 85 and 86, 87, as is shown in Figs. 1, 9, 10, 11, and 12. When depressing a key and rocking the corresponding setting member 72 or 73, either the rings 84, 85 or the rings 86, 87 are forced downward. The said rings are guided within each other and within a stationary ring 88 which incloses the movable rings and rises from the base plate 2. They are formed with projections so as to provide longitudinal strips 84, 85', 86,, and 87 between which bails 89, 90, 91, and 92 are jointed. The said bails have rocking supports on a common shaft 93 mounted in brackets 94 and 95, and they provide guides for the rings 84, 85,86, and 87. The stri s 84, 85', 86', and 87 are notched at their ower ends in such a way, that the two outer rings 84 and 85 both act on contact levers 96 and 97, while the inner rings 86 and 87 act on con tact levers 98 and 99. The levers 96, 97 98, and 99 have rocking supports in brackets 100, 101, 102, and 103, and they are actedupon by springs 104, 105, 106, and 107, which tend to lift the rings 84, 85, 86, and 87 into engagement with the horizontal arms of the setting members 72 and 73. The levers 96, 97 98 and 99 have contact springs 108, 109, 110, and 111 secured thereto which are 10- nets 37, which includes the springs 108 and 110, is closed later, as will now be described.
The armatures 60 and 61 of the rotating electromagnets are equipped with contact making arms 116 and 117 respectively, to which the contact screws 112 and 114-are secured. If one of the armatures 60 or 61 is rocked, the corresponding contact screw 114 or 112 is likewise rocked and moved downward and toward the coiiperating con tact spring 110 or 108 which is located below the same.
Simultaneously therewith or slightly before, the contact spring 108 or 110'is moved upward and toward the cotiperating contact screw. Therefore the circuits of the printing electromagnets which are controlled by the contacts 112, 108 and 114, 110 respectively are closed after the circuits of the rotating electromagnets which are controlled by the contacts 109, 113 and 111, 115 are made. i The object of the construction of the con tact making devices cooperating with the printing electromagnets is the following: As has been explained above, in viewof the rapid operation of the machine it is desirable, that the type wheel rotating movement and the printigg movement be performed as far as possible simultaneously, the rotary movement however being completed before the type wheel strikes against the platen. If the angle at which. the type wheel is to be turned is but small, printing may be performed more rapidly, than in such cases where the said angle is comparatively large. By constructing the contact making devices in such a way, -that the contacts for the printing electromagnet are made by the rocking movements of the armatures of the rotating electromagnets, printing can not be premature. As the rotating electromagnet is already moving when the printing electromagnet is being energized, it arrives at the end of its movement before the printing electromagnet has completed the printing operation. Under any circumstances the contact for the printing electromaget must be made so late, that the type wheel can complete its rotation before printing is completed, and for this purpose the contact making devices must be set according to the maximum angle at which the type wheel can be turned. However in such cases in which the rotation is completed comparatively early, the circuit of the printing electromagnet is closed unnecessarily late, so that in such cases the velocity of printing is unnecessarily small, though apart from this consideration, it would be possible to print so much the sooner, the smaller the angle of rotation of the type wheel is. To avoid this disadvantage, my machine is constructed as follows: As has been described above, by each operation of the setting members 72 and 73 two of the rings 84, 85 and 86, 87 are depressed. As is best shown in Figs. 13 and 14 one of the said rings is-made at its top in the form of a half screw-thread. Therefore it is forced downward by the setting members 72 and 73 a distance which is different in all the setting members, and which corresponds to the angle of rotation of the type wheel. As the movement of the ring is transmitted to the cooperating contact spring 108 or 109, the said spring is moved toward the cooperating contact screw a greater or less distance. Furthermore the strokes of the contact screws are different, because the stroke of the armature of the rotating electromagnet varies according to the angle at which the type wheel is turned. The parts are so arranged, that where the stroke of the rotating armature is small the stroke of the contact spring is increased accordingly, and vice versa. Therefore, when the type wheel is turned at a small angle, the contacts of the circuit including the printing electromagnet are closed so much the earlier.
The rings 84, 85, 86, and 87 are adapted to rock a crank 118 downward. The said crank is provided with an upright arm 118' the upper end of which is engaged in a slot made in the type wheel locking pawl 70. Therefore whenever a key is depressed, the pawl 70 which normally locks the type wheel against rotation is rocked into releasing position, so that the type wheel can be rotated. The crank 118 has a rocking support in bearings 135 and 136, and it is normally held by a spring 119 in contact with an adjustable cushion 120. and is returned by the said spring into its position of rest, as soon as the rings which have rocked the crank have returned into their normal positions. Thereby also the pawl 70 is returned into initial position and, after the type wheel has re turned into normal position. into locking engagement with the type wheel shaft. The cushion 120 can be set by being mounted on a screw bolt 120'. Thereby the end position of the arm 118' and the pawl 7 0 can be set in such a way, that the said pawl can not fall with its locking nose on the bottom of the notch made in the collar 69 nor slide on the said collar. Thereby the pawl gets into lock: ing engagement without any noise, and when the type wheel is returning into initial position, friction of the type wheel shaft is prevented.
When depressing a key, the rocker plate 12 strikes on a setting ring 121 secured to a rod 122, so as to shift the said rod downward. The rod is jointed at its upper end to an arm 123 and at its lower end to a rockmg lever 124. By the downward movement of the arm 123 a letter spacing mechanism 126 of any known or preferred construction s thrown into operatlon, which mechanism 1s operatlvely connected with a spur gearing 125. Simultaneously, through the intermediary of setting rings 127 and 128 a bail 131 is rocked which has a rockin support on plvots 129 and 130, and which is located with 1ts curved part adjacent to the fingers 83 of the arms 83. By the said bail the arm 83 whlch before was shifted forward by the key being depressed and into posit1on wlth its finger above the bail 131 is thrown into releasing position, so that the sett ng member 72 or 73 can be returned by 1ts spring 132 into inoperative position. Thereby the rings 84, 85, 86, and 87 and the contact springs controlled thereby are likewise returned into inoperative positions, together with all the parts controlled by the electromagnets. It will readily be understood, that this returning operation is entlrely independent of the key which may still be in depressed position. In the same way the letter spacing mechanism 126 advances the carriage, even if the key is still in depressed position.
As after throwing the arm 83 into releasing position the setting member 72 or 73 must first be returned into normal position by the spring 132, and the contact springs whlch by their operation were bent remain a short time in contact with their terminals until they have assumed their straight form, and as on the other hand the type wheel is already moving toward the platen, when the arm 83 is being thrown into releasing position the letter is necessarily printed before the current is actually interrupted. If the current were interrupted before printing is completed, the type wheel would be rotated backward before reaching the platen, and
printing would not be effected with sufficient force. But what would be most objectionable is that the correct character would not be printed on the paper, because the type wheel would already have been turned into initial position or into an intermediate position. In my improved machine the breaking of the circuits is initiated during the printing operation, and it is retarded by the intermediate members 72, 73, or 84', 85, 86, 87, 108, 109,- 110, and 111, which begin their return movements when the arm 83 is being released. Thereby the moment at which the circuit is broken is made independent of the moment at which printing takes place. Of course, the current -result aimed at .by me, and which consists in breaking the circuit immediately after printing but under no circumstances before printing. Therefore in my improved machine I am enabled to depress several of the keys and yet to operate other keys. After releasing the keys, the arms 83 are at once returned by their springs 84 into operative positions.
The space key has been indicated by the numeral 133. It is provided on a key lever 134. When depressing the space key 134 the lever 124 which is operatively connected with the spacing mechanism 126 is actuated and the carriage advanced one space. i
The horizontal arms of the setting members 72, 73 which are located above the rings 84, 85, 86, and 87 are bent laterally toward each other and in such a way, that the longer arm of the setting members 73 are located above the shorter arms of the setting members 72, so that the ends of adjacent arms are disposed within the same radial plane. Thereby one half of the space which would otherwise be necessary for disposing the ends of the arms is'spared, which is a considerable advantage in constructing the machine. Thereby the machine requires less space, and the size of the movable parts is reduced, so that they are more easily moved, and by reducing the masses of the movable parts their speed and therefore the speed of the machine are increased.
In order that the type wheel may readily be mounted on or dismounted from the type wheel shaft, I prefer to construct the same in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 15. To the upper end of the type wheel shaft 7 a sleeve 137 is secured, which is made integral with a' transverse block 138 which is provided atv one-of its ends with an upright pin 140. Above the block 138 a spring 139 is coiled around the sleeve 137. The part of the sleeve which is located above the plate is adapted to receive the type wheel which for this purpose is formed with a central sleeve 6'. The upper part. of the sleeve 137 is provided with two longitudinal slits 6 which are diametrically opposite to each other, and within the said part of the sleeve a U-shaped spring 141 is embedded which is made at the upper ends of its shanks in the form of locking pawls 142 which are pointed at their-top ends. Both locking pawls are located symmetrically of the axis of the sleeve, and they project laterally of the slits 6 Above the locking pawls a push button 143 is located within the sleeve which projects upward and beyond the upper margin of the sleeve and is formed at its bottom end with a notch 144 engaged by the upper points of the locking pawls. The locklng pawls have the tendency to spring outward, and the beveled faces on which the button 143 bears force yield at first backward and into the sleeve their spring action, and the spring 139 is pressed together, but finally the pawls spring backward so as to engage above the upper; surface of the type wheel, whereupon the type wheel can be released and is forced by the spring 139 against the locking pawls.
If it is desired to take the type wheel away from the shaft 7, the button 143 is slightly depressed. Thereby the pawls are forced into the sleeve by reason of the beveled faces, so that the type wheel is released and forced upward by the spring 139, whereupon it can easily be removed.
Instead of the locking pawls shown in the drawing a spring member having a single locking pawl may be provided, or if desired more than two locking spring members may be employed. Furthermore instead of mounting the locking pawls on rocking spring arms, they may be disposed in any suitable Way, provided they are adapted to yield by spring action.
spacing mechanism 126 whenever the rod 122 is pulled downward either by the armature of the printing electromagnet or by depressing the key 133. It is necessary to limit the movement of the carriage at both ends in order to fix the margin and the endof the line. In my-machine two slide members 145 and 146 are provided for this purpose, which are mounted on a rack 147 connected with the carriage and provided with scalemarks. For setting the left hand margin or the beginning of the line the slide 145 is used, which is" provided at its bottom side with a ncse 148, cooperating with a pin 149 projecting through the top plate of the frame and adapted to be engaged at its left side by the nose 148. Also the slide 146 cooperates with the pin 149, and it is arranged in position for stopping the paper carriage on its movement to the left. For this purpose the construction is such, that the circuit which connects the electromagnets and the terminals thereof is interrupted when the slide 146 strikes against the pin 149. The pin 149 is disposed on a bell crank lever 150 which is disposed below the top plate 3 and carries on its downwardly projecting arm a pressure roller 151. The pressure roller bears 011- a on sp ing 152 h ch is secured to a pillar 153 rising from the lower base plate 1 and insulated therefrom. The lower'end of the contact spring is dis osed between two contact screws 154 an 155 which are secured to and insulated from a bracket 156 mounted on the pillar 153, and which are electrically connected with each other.-
Normally the spring 152 bears on the contact screw 154 so that the circuit is closed. When the slide 146 strikes with its left hand lower edge 146 on a beveled face 149 formed on the right hand side of the pin 149, the pin is forced downward so as to rock the lever 150. Thereby the pressure roller 151 forces the contact spring 152 away from the contact screw 154 to such an extent, that it is held at a distance bet-ween both contact screws 154 and 155. Now the circuit is interrupted, so that the carriage can not be moved, nor the type wheel rotated nor thrown against the platen, when other key levers are depressed.
Now it frequently happens, that at the end of a line a few letters must be printed in order to complete a syllable. In order that this can be done in my improved machine, the contact screw 155 is provided. The bell crank lever 150 is mounted on a rock shaft 157 which extends'to 'the front and upper part of the machine casing, where it is equipped with a crank 158. If the shaft is rocked by means of the crank beyond its intermediate position between contact screws 154 and 155 the contact spring engages the contact screw 155. Thereby the circuit which beforewas interrupted by the pin 149 being depressed by the slide 146 is again closed. When returning the slide the pin 149 is again released, and the contact spring returns into normal position and into engagement with the contact screw 154.
Furthermore, by returning the crank 158 the stop pin 149 can be retracted and the carriage shifted so far to the right, that the left hand slide 145 moves above the pin. Thereupon the left hand margin can be printed upon. When thus writing on the margin the slide 145 is moved with the carriage to the left and toward the pin 149, which has returned into advanced position, and when it strikes with its left hand lower part on the pin 149, the circuit is broken, so that the remarks made on the margin are not continued beyond the left hand marginal line of the ordinary line. When shifting the carriage and the slide 145 to the left the nose 148 slides with its beveled left hand-face.
over the pin, whereupon the slide and the carriage are in their normal positions.
The electrical connection between the rotating electromagnets 58, 59, the printing electromagnets 37 and the individual contacts is shown in a diagrammatical way in Fig. 18. As appears from the description be blurred by the type wheel starting its return'rotary movement prior to the return movement away from the platen, for which purpose the rotating electromagnet is deenergized simultaneously with the printing electromagnet, so that no force acts on the type wheel during its return movement which could stop any of its movements. For this purpose at the side of the contact screws 113 and 115 contact screws 113 and 115' respectively are provided, which are connected with each other by a conductor X and cotiperate with the contact springs matted 111;
For connecting the machine with the source of electric energy two terminals are provided on an insulating block 159 to which conductors I and V are connected. The conductor I includes the contact spring 152 mounted on the pillar 153 and leads to a connecting block 160, to which further conductors II, VI, and XI are connected, which conductors are constantly connected with one another, and with the conductor I. According as the rotating electromagnet 58 or the rotating electromagnet 59 is to be thrown into operation by the key being depressed; the following circuits are made:
When, depressing av key which controls the rotating electromagnet 58, at first the contact spring 111 is lifted which, moves the contact 115 and 115 into position for closing the circuits controlled thereby. Thereby the following circuit is closed: from the terminal, over'I, 160, II, 58, III, 115, 111, IV, V, and back to the terminal. The armature of the electromags net 58 which is being attracted rocks the lever 116 with its contact screw 114 toward the contact spring 110. Thereby a circuit is closed from the terminal, over I, 160, VI, 110, 114, 116, VII, VIII,printin'g electromagnet 37, IX, 115, 111, IV, V, and back to the terminal, so that also the printing electromagnet is energized. As both circuits include the contact spring 111, they are simultaneously broken by the said contact spring. Similar conneqtions are made in case a key is being depressed which.
spring 109 closes a circuit at the contacts 113 and 113. Thereupon the current asses from the terminal, over I, 160, 59, XII, 113, 109, V, and to the terminal. As the armature of the electromagnet 59 is being attracted, the contact 108, 112, is closed, whereupon a second circuit is made as follows: from terminal,.over I, 160, VI, XIII, 108, 112, 117, VIII, printing electromagnet 37, IX, X, 113', 109, V, and back to the terminal. Thereby also the printing electromagnet is thrown into operation, and if thereafter the contact spring 109 is retracted from the contact screws 113, 113, the printing and rotating electromagnets are simultaneously, denergized. Thereby the return movement of the type wheel into position of rest is accelerated, and the speed of writing increased, and the letter which has been printed can not be blurred by the type wheel beginning its return rotary movement before being moved out of contact with the paper.
In the claims the contacts 113' and 115' are referred to as main circuit making and breaking means for the'electrical throwing means, and the contacts 112 and 114 are described as additional circuit making and breaking means. The main circuit making and breaking means or contacts 113 and 115' are controlled by the same operating members 109 and 111 respectively as the circuit making and breaking means 113 and 115 which control the electrical turning means for the type carrier, so that the electrical turning and throwing means are simultaneously made inoperative, and the rotary return movement of the type carrier into initial position is not started before the return movement of the type carrier away from the platen has been started.
