and middlings may be effected under conditions minimizing the cost as to the mechanism and labor, and to this end the invention consists of a construction, combination and relation of parts hereinafter specifically set forth, it being understood that changes in form and proportion may be resorted to, within the scope of the claims without departing from the principles involved.

Within a suitable casing, preferably rectangular in plan there is arranged a plurality of longitudinal series of compartments, of which two are shown in the drawing, separated by a longitudinal partition 10, said compartments being numbered 11, 12, 13 and 14 and separated from each other and from a tailing apron 15 by the transverse walls or partitions 16, 17, 18 and 19 which have their upper edges located below the upper edges of the side walls 20 and the longitudinal partition wall 10 at graduated distances. In other words, the transverse separating partitions between consecutivel compartments of each series constitute baflles or obstacles over which the material in one compartment flows into the next compartment and are of graduated heights, decreasing toward the outlet or tail end of the series. As a simple and economical construction of the framework constituting the casing with its partitions and compartments into which the interior of the casing is divided, the drawing shows the extremities of the partitions mortised into the walls of the casing and engaged by vertical bolts 21, a similar construction being contemplated in transverse walls.

Moreover, packing boxes 42 and 43 may be arranged respectively in the end wall of the casing and the transverse wall between the compartments 12 and 13 for the passage of said piston rods.
In practice it is preferable to construct each piston or plunger of a block 44 of wood or equivalent material faced with iron or other suitable metal plates 45 secured in place by cross bolts 46,

adjacent the longitudinal partition 10 and there is a tendency, to deflect the concentrates .towardvthe side walls so that they 'may be deposited in the-cups 24, the concentrate and middlings passlng through the screens beingdeflected toward the hutches 27 by the inclined hopper like floors 4E7. In each'succeeding compartment some of the concentrates and middlings left from the operation in the preceding compartment'are over the tailing apron practically all of the concentrates and middlings are removed.
The invention having been described, what vis claimed asnew and useful is: 1. An apparatus for the purposedescribed having a series of consecutively available concentrate and middlings compartments provided with separating screens disposed adjacent the tops of sald compartments and separated by transverse barriersof graduated heights, concentrate cups disposed at the upper edges of the barriers and above the planes of the screens, a feed launder and a tailing apron operatively disposed with reference to the concentrate and terminal middlings compartments, a bottom outlet hutch in ach compartment, and agitating means arranged between pairs of adjacent compartments in a plane substantiallyintermediate between the planes of the concentrate cups and the outlet hutches.
