.A ARON T. BUTLER, OF LINTON, INDIANA,
, FILE rno'rnc'ron AND SHEATH.
Application filed November 4, 1920. Serial No. 421,613.
Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File Protectors and Sheaths, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to improvements in file protectors and more particularly to a protector designed to keep the idle edge or side of the file free from dust, dirt and other foreign matter and which is readily removitible and changeable from side to side of the The main object of my invention is to provide means to protect the idle side of a file when the same is being used and at the same time permit the file to be quickly changed so that either side will be available for use by the operator.
, A. still further object of the invention is to provide an improved handle which in addition to facilitating manipulation of the file serves as a means to retain the protector in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sheath or holder for the reception of the file and protector.
Various other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.
In the drawings I Figure 1 is a view in top plan of the improved protector with the file in position.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation showing the file in place in connection with the protector and the handle arranged on the file.
Fig. 3 is a view in bottom plan showing the entire device assembled.
Referring particularly to Fig. 1, 10 designates the body of the protector which is formed of metal and which has its longi tudinal edges upturned to form flanges 11. The front end of the body portion 10 is also bent upwardly and turned inwardly as at 12 so as to form a socket for the reception of one end of the file. The portion 12may be soldered or otherwise secured to the adjacent portion of the flanges 11.
At its rear end the body portion 10 extends slightly beyond the point at which the flanges l1 terminate and the corners of the extended portion are bent upwardly to form lips 13 and an opening 14 therebetween for the reception of the shank of the file as will be hereinafter described. I
When the file-15 is in position its forward end lies in a socket formed by the inturned portion 12 and the adjacent portion of the flanges 11 while the lips 13 bear against the shoulders 16 at the other end of the file and the shank 17 lies in the opening 14.
The handle portion 17 may be formed of wood or other suitable or desirable material, and is provided with a central longitudinal opening or socket 18 for the reception'of the shank 17 of the file. Adjacent the mouth of the opening 18 the handle is provided with an extension 19 which when in place lies beneath the body portion 10 of the protector and firmly retains the same in position about the file 15. The extension is tapered toward the free end and the sides are slightly beveled as at 20 for the purpose that will presently appear.
The sheath 21 which receives the file and protector may be formed from a single sheet of material whose longitudinal edges are bent as at 22 and whose end portion is bent as at 23. The other end of the sheath remains open and adjacent this opening, the portions 22 are cut away as at 24 to form a substantially wedge shaped opening. Consequently, when the file and protector are in place within the sheath, the extension 19 of the handle 17 fits the wedge-shaped opening, the beveled edges 20 of the extension overlying and firmly retaining the adjacent edges of the portions 22 of the sheath. This arrangement provides for a complete and compact structure.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a file having a shank, a protector comprising a bodyportion' having its longitudinal edges upturned to form flanges, one end of said body portion being upturned and bent inwardly to form a socket, the other end of said body being provided with upstanding lips in spaced relation to each other, said body portion being adapted to receive said file, said shank projecting between said lips, a handle portion having an opening to receive said shank, and means on Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 20, 1921;
a of said file, a body portion adapted to receive said file and cover one side thereof,
longitudinal flanges formed at the longitudinal edges of said body portion of less height than the thickness of said file, a Socket formed at one end of said body portion to receive the adjacent end of said file,
upstanding lipsformed at the other end of said body portion and abutting the shoulders of Said file adjacent said shank, a handle portion having an opening 1 to receive saidshank, an extension on said bodyportion engaging'the outer face of said body portion, said extension tapering toward its free end and being beveled along :its longitudinal edges toward its inner face, and a removable sheath adapted to receive said file and said body portion and including means to cooperate'with the beveled edges of said extension substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
