Be it known that I HARRY T. E MERY,.fl states, and resident of tors, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a furnace or stove.
The ashes shaken through .the grate bars of a furnace or stove, by reason of imperfect combustion, normally contain a large amount of unburnt cinders, which if separated from the ashes themselves, may be thrown back into the furnace and provide suitable fuel therefor. The principal object of the present invention is to provide simple means for separating such cinders from the ashes, and whereby the operation may be performed inside the ash pit of the furnace or stove, thus preventing the dust and dirt from beingdistributed about the cellaror other furnace room.
A further object of the invention is to" provide means whereby the sifting operation is performed coincidentally with the agitation of the grate bars of the furnacefor shaking down the ashes.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in connection with a separator of the character mentioned, an ash pan whereby the ashes may be conveniently removed from the ash pit of a furnace or stove.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description thereof.

- A circular hopper 5 is arranged to rest on lugs 6 in the pan 1. The hopper 5 is provided with a perforated separator plate '7, which is loosely mounted for rotary motion inthe hopper, being retained in position Secured to the perforated plate 7 on the under side is a shaker bar'9, by meansof which the plate is rotated in the hopper, Mounted in the hopfor agitating the contents of the hopper when the plate 7 is moved. The shaker bar 9 is bent as shown at 11 so as to clear the bottom of the hopper, and the outer end of the bar is provided with a fiat member 12, which is arranged, if desired, to receive a handle 13, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The hopper 5 flares upwardly so as to be of equal dimensions with the grate bars of the furnace, and is provided with hinged side walls 14, which may be turned inwardly, as
*shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the hopper may be inserted and removed through the ash pit door of a furnace. The lower extremities of the walls 14 are hinged upon the wire which forms the bottom rim ofthe hopper as shown in Fig. 4.
Where the furnace is provided with grate bars agitated by'rotation, the flat portion of the shaker bar 9 of the hopper may be connected with the grate shaker bar 15, by means of a bifurcated link 16, shown in detail in Fig. 3, which is provided with a head 17 arranged to be clamped to the grate bar 15. The link 16 is pivotally secured to the head 17, and the bifurcations thereof are adapted to fit against the sides of the end 12 of the shaker bar9. Operation of the bar 15 will thus obviously cause similar action of the bar 9, separating and sifting the ashes as they are received by the hopper. The pivotal mounting of the link permits the ready disengagement thereof from the shaker bar 9.
From the foregoing description the nature and operation of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. By the use of the device it will be seen that the ashes may be sifted within the ash pit of v the furnace or stove, thereby preventing the distribution of dust and dirt about the premises as well as preventing the operators person and garments from becoming soiled.
