Be it known that I, CHARLES Srnzo, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York,y have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typebar-Actions, of which the following is a speciication.
, This invention relates to a typebar action for typewriting machines, and particularly to a construction wherein the operative parts are closely nested to produce a compactA arrangement occupying the minimum of space.
The invention has for an obj ect to provide a novel and improved construction and arrangement of the key leven-type barand intermediate connecting sublever, with Vthe pivot of the sublever disposed in arplane beneath the pivotrof the key lever so as to permit the dispositionof the typebar immediately above said key lever. Y
Another `and further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of key lever' having a depressed portion at its upper surface to receive the typebar, and means for connection with a sublever pivoted in a plane beneath the pivot of the key lever. c
'Other and further yobjects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.v

VThe numeral 1() designates the frame of a typewriting machine which may be of any desired character' or configuration and is provided withthe usual feet 11 by which it V1s raised above the support upon which the machine rests. YThe rear wall 12 is provided at its lower portion with a' plate 13 spaced therefrom and extending; downward parallel to the wall to provide at its free edge 14 a pivotal bearing or fulcrum for the inner z ,the machine, and has anlupwardly inclined Vportlon 19 extending rearwardly therefrom and terminating ina shoulder 20 connecting :with an inclined depressed portion 21 forming a space to receive the typebar when at rest. When in this position the head 22 of the tyepbar is in substantially the same horizontal plane as the finger piece of the key lever.
VThe depressed portion 21 of the key leverV is provided at its inner end with a raised shoulder 23 from which a horizontal portion 4 24 extends to an elevated spring seat 25. At

plate 13. Disposed within the seat 25k and surrounding the lug 28 therein, is the lifting spring 29 which rests at its opposite end upona fixedpsupport 3() and surrounds a lug 31 extending upward therefrom. These parts are duplicated for each of theseveral key levers.
The sublevers 16 are pivotally mounted in a cross bar 32 extending between the opposite sides of the machine frame beneath the plane of the key lever lpivots and intermediate the length of said key levers. This cross bar is provided with a series of vertik cal slots 33 to receive the several sub levers and also with a longitudinal groove 34 within which the pivoting rod 35 vfor the Sub levers extending across the machine is disposed. The sublevers' are of a substantially bellcrank type and comprise a pivoting portion 36 from which a horizontal slotted connecting arm 37 extends and is connected to the key lever at a point below the pivot thereof by any desired means, such as a -pin' 38 extendinglaterally from the key lever. This provides a pin and slot connection between the vsub lever and key lever,
giving a sliding pivotal connection at that point which provides an increased leverage during the downward stroke of the key.
Extending upward from the pivotal portion 36 of the sublever is a connecting arm 39, which may be of any desired length and disposed at the proper angle necessary to provide connection with the type bars in the ascending arc of the sector 43. This arm 39 is provided at its upper end with the' vtta it, which is actuated by the Vportion 45 of the type bar to impart thereto a rearward sliding movement. The bail is'connected lto the escapement d'og's 47 by a swinging 'link 46 pivoted, thereto 'andfto the tail 48 depending from the dogs. rl`hese dogs are supported from. the carriageframe 49 in the usual manner and move therewith in the vertical shifting of the carriage to bring the platen 50 into position for either upper or lower case writing. The link connection permits the bail to maintain accurate and constant relation with the es capeme'nt mechanism in either shifted position 'of the carrinse The head 22 of the type bars 17 rests upon the usual support 51 when in inactive position, and in the present construction this support is disposed in the depressed nesting space above the key levers. i
The operation of the invention will be apparent 'from the foregoing description and it will be seen that the disposition vof the sub lever and its connection with the key lever and type bar provide for increasing leverage during the downward stroke of the key lever and an accelerated movement of the typeV bar in its travel Vtoward the platen, thus securing a closelynestedor compact construction the important advantages of this lcharacter of type bar action. It will be nted that these desirable results are secured byfdisposing' the pivot ef the s'ub lever in a plane below `the Apivot of the key lever, and are facilitated by providing the connection between these levers below the fulcrum ofthe key lever.'V
his invention also` presents a special novel 'construction ofl lkey lever providing for the nesting of the type bar immediately above its upper surface, and als with means fr mountingandconnecting the lifting spring which requires the least possible space to secure thel necessary action, and leaves the space above the key levers at the rear of the machine free for the disposition of other mechanism. This is an important contributory feature in the construction of a low, compact and light weighttypewriter.
-While the details of construction of a number` of the parts have been specifically described, still the invention is not confined thereto as defined by the followingv claims.
What I claim is l. A type bar action comprising a key lever pivoted adjacent the rear of the typewriter, a type bar pivotallyV mounted at' a point above said key lever, a bell crank lever swinging about a fixed pivot positioned below said key lever, a pin and slot connection between said key lever and one arm of said bell crank lever, and a pin and slot connection between the other arm of said bell crank leverand said type bar, whereby the` height of said type bar action is materially decreased.
2. A typebar action comprising a key lever pivoted adjacent the rear of va typewriter, a typebar pivotally mounted at a point above said key lever, and an angular lever swinging about a xed pivot positioned below said key lever and directly engaging said typebar and also said key lever intermediate the ends thereof, whereby the height of said typebar action is materi'allyreduced.
3. A typebar action comprising a key lever pivoted adjacent the rear of a typewriter, a typebar pivotally mounted at a point above said key lever, an angular lever swinging about a fixed pivot positioned below said key lever and directly engaging said typebar and also said key lever intermediate the'ends thereof, and a restoring spring for said key lever disposed above the pivot of said angular lever. A typebar action comprising a key lever pivoted adjacent the rear of 'a typewriter and having a raised spring seat, a typebar pivotally mounted at a point above 'said key lever, an angular lever swinging about a fixed pivot positioned below said key lever and directly engaging said typeb'ar and also said key lever intermediate the ends thereof, and a restoring. spring for said key lever disposed above the pivot of said angular lever and entering said seat.
5,. In a typebar action, apivoted key lever vprovided with a depressed portion intermediate its ends, va pivoted type bar arranged to be disposed within said portion when at rest, and a connecting sub lever pivoted beneath the key lever at the rear of said depressed portien adjacent the typebar pivot and directly connected to said key lever at the inner end Yof saiddepre'ssedportion.

7. A key lever having an upwardly inclined portion extending rearwardly from its key board end and terminating in a shoulder, a depressed portion extending rearward 'from said shoulder to a raised horizontal portion and provided with a sub lever connection at the inner end of the depressed portion, a raised spring seat formed 1n said horizontal portion, and a pivoting end extended from said seat.
8. In a type bar action, a pivoted key lever engaging said type bar, and a connectionk from said key lever to said second lever.
9. In a typebar action, a pivoted typebar, a sub lever pivoted below the'typebar and `directly engaging the same, and a key lever having its rear pivoted portion located above the sub lever fulcrum and its body provided with a lost motion connection with the sub lever and having its forward key supporting portion elevated for its stroke movement above the horizontal plane of the sub lever fulcrum.
