' S AIETY-RAZOR.
To all whom it may comern: Be it known that I, CARL L. Mnnz, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety razors and its has for a general object 'to produce a safety razor characterized bywimproved efficiency both as to cutting qualities, ease of manipulation, and facility in mounting and removing the razor blade. v 1 In "safety razors as heretofore used the i parts are so constructed that the cutting edge of the blade advances with adirect motion at right angles to itself during operation when the handle is held in the natural position for easy manipulation, extending in a plane vertical to the surface being acted u on. A further object is to provide a novel means for securing thecutting blade in place, which means is simple in construe g tion and facilitates application and removal of the blade, and alsois arranged without detachable parts liable to be lost. For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings,

eferring nowto the dra i y proved safety razor comprises a blade 'support in the form of a plate 10, which, transversely considered, presents backwardly bent marginal portions 10' and 10, giving the front face of the plate a} generally convexed contour, although the intermediate portion of the plate is preferably left flat. For convenience in description, in referrin to the 7 blade support the view shown in ig. 1 of the drawings will be referred to as the transverse edge view and that in Fig. 2 as the longitudinal edge view.
This plate 10 is adapted to be mounted on a handle 12 which is preferably in the form of a straight barof circular cross section and which may have the rear portion there- 1 of knurledas at 12', or otherwise forin'ed I to facilitate gripping in the hand of the user. The handle 12 is adapted for different angular positioning with respect to th plate 10, considerin the plate in transverse edge view, these a justments all occurring in a plane intersecting the plate at right angles as seen in longitudinal edgeview; in which plane the handle extends for a urpose to be later set-forth in greater detail To secure the handle 12 to the plate 10 the latter is formed between its ends with a backwardly bowed portion 13, leaving an '0 en sided socket in the. frontface of the -p ate in'which is located a filler block 11 whose rear face is curved to fit the part 13 and whose front face is flat and projects slightly beyond the face of the plate, providing the latter with a projection 14' adapted to engage the cutting blade. The latter is indicated at 15 and is provided with a rectangular opening 16 which fits snugly over the projection 14, while the corners of the plate 10 have forw-ardly bent lugs 17 against which the corners of the blade 15 rest. The block 14 may be secured in place by forming a boss 19 on the curved rear face thereof which is extended through a suitable opening in the member 13 and riveted over the edges of the latter. Formed in the segmental boss thus formed on the back of plate 10 are a series of angularly differentiated threaded sockets 20 which are adapted to re ceive the screw threaded end 12 of the handle 12 to secure the latter to the blade holder.
As previously referred to briefly, an important feature of the invention is the ar- I side with a straight cutting edge 23 which as seen in face view is inclined or diagonal with respect to the longitudinal median line of the plate 10. This longitudinal median line may be definied as one extending at right angles to the plane of adjustment of.
handle 12 and located approximately midway between the cutting edges of the blade. The guard for this cutting edge is formed by the back-turned marginal portion 10' of the plate 10 which projects slightly beyond the edge of the blade and is formed with serrations 24. With this arrangement, as will be understood, when the razor is applied to the face with the handle 12 extending,
and moving, in a plane at right angles to the surface to which the razor is applied one end of the edge 23 moves in advance of the other and the compound movement above referred to takes place, in contra-distinction to the straight advancing movement of the ordinary type of safety blade, resulting in an improved cutting action and decreasing the pull of the razor on the heard.
The opposite edge 25, of the blade 15 to that just described is convexed as seen in face view, the bent back portion 10 of the plate 10 forming a guard for this edge. This bent back portion is formed with notches or serrations 26 which preferably enlarge toward their inner ends as shown. With this convexed cutting edge, the compound action above referred to is obtained ,while at the -same time-applicationof the-razorto the concaved contours of the face is facilitated.
Referring now' to the means for securing the blade 15 upon the plate 10, and which with the latter, jointly constitute the blade holder, this means here comprises a cover 30 hinged at one end as at 31 to the plate- 10 and having a pair of tongues 32 struck inwardly therefrom and adapted to bear with a resilient pressure on the cutting blade 15, on opposite sides of the project-ion 14, these tongues pressing the blade against the lugs 17, the latter projecting slightly beyond the center portion of the plate so that the blade is slightly sprung when the tongues press therea-gainst. The free end -of'this cover is formed with an inturned member 33 which is formed with a slot 34 and proj ects across the end of the plate 10. Slidably carried on the back of the latter is a latchbar 35 which is adapted to be projected into the slot 34. This latch-bar 35 may be conveniently guided by a strap-element 36 struck backwardly from the plate 10 and may have a thumb-piece 37 on its inner end. To accommodate the hinge 31 the cutting blade 15 may have anotch 38 formed in one end thereof.
By providing the lugs 17 on the holder plate 10 the edge of the blade is kept spaced from the guard elements 24, 26 while at the same time the slight springing of the blade as the tongues 32 press thereon acts to keep it firmly in position.
As will be apparent from the above description I have provided a novel safety razor in which are embodied, in a simple construction, features whereby manipulation is facilitated and the cutting action improved.
As will be noted, in operation, the handle 12 may be given a stroke in a plane at right angles to the surface acted upon while the cutting. edge of the blade will be diagonal to its line of movement and a compound cutting action is effected, this diagonal disposition of the cutting edge causing both to advance in-toand to have a lateral movement across the part being shaved.
Having thus described my invention what g claim as new and desire to protect by Let- 1ers Patent of the United States is as folows:
1. In a safety-razor, a blade holder comprising a plate presenting opposed diagonal and convexed guard edges, a block set into said plate centrally thereof'and having its front face projecting slightly beyond the plate, said block and plate presenting a convexed rear portion having a series of angularly differentiated sockets adapted to receive a handle. i
2. In a safety razor, a blade holder comprising a plate presenting opposed diagonal and convexed guard edges, said plate presenting a flat portion intermediate the said edges, and backwardly bent marginal portions, said tral portion forming a socket, a filler block in said socket having its front face projecting slightly beyond thefront face of the plate, and angularly differentiated sockets opening through said bowed portion of the plate into said block to receive a handle.
3. In a safety razor, a holder plate, a block element secured in the center of said plate with its front-face projecting slightly beyond the plate and its rear face convexed, said rear face bein formed with a series of angularly differentiated sockets adapted to receive a handle, a blade having an opening complementary to said forwardly projecting face of the block, and a cover member engaging o-ver said blade.
4. In a safety razor, a holder plate, a block element secured in the center of said plate with its front face projecting slightly beyond the plate and its rear face convexed, said rear face being formed with a series of angularly differentiated sockets adapted to receive a handle, a blade having an opening complementary to said forwardly projecting face of the block, and a cover member engaging over said blade, said cover member having resilent tongues, plate having forwardly projecting lugs at the corners thereof against which the blade is pressed by the said tongues.
