EXPANSIBLE SEPUC TANK.
APPLICATION mzn'MAR. 14'. 1921.

l EXPANSIBLE smvrrc marx.
Specification of Letters Patent. `Patnted- Aug', 30, 1921.
Application filed March 14, 1921. Serial No. 451,995.
lTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX R. HYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county ofMarion and State of Indiana' have invented a new and useful Expan'sible Septic Tank, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a series of concrete slabs of such character that they may be readily handled manually and assembled by comparatively unskilled workmen into a septic tank of any desired capacity and shape in accordance with the needs and available area of any particular location.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective'view of a three-compartment 'rei ceiving chamber of a septic tank formed by my improved sections or slabs; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, on a smaller scale.
In the drawings 1() indicates a slab, pref'- erably of concrete suitably reinforced, used as bottoms, tops and imperforate sides, to form a compartment. Slab 10 is preferably formed, as indicated, with a continuous rabbet 11 around its sides so proportioned that six of said slabs may be brought together in box form and sealed by a suitable cement at the joints.
I also provide special end slabs 12 perforated at 13 to receive a standard elbow 14 to slrve as inlet and outlet for the completed tan Perforated partition slabs 15 are provided to separate the system into the successive chambers which are necessary to obtain the clarifying and sewage disposal action which is well known. In order to obtain desired capacity in the several chambers of the system I provide the peculiar two-.part pary tition slab composed of the two identical parts orslab pieces 15-15 which are cut away at one corner, The precise manner of form ot' the cut away portion being immaterial so long as there is provided a sufficient footing width at the narrow part, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1, the arrangement .hundred and twenty being such that two slab sections 15, when put together in any arrangement, will provide a full and adequate support for the top slabs 10. The construction of these central slab members 15 is such that by varying the arrangement, as indicated in Fig. 1, a serpentine flow of liquids may be obtained from one part of a chamber to-another. The cut-away portion or corner of the slab section 15 has a height less than the -normal working depth ofthe liquid in the tanks so that the film 16 of microrganism will be unbroken by the flow of liquid from one.
part of the chamber to another.
It will be noted that the various slabs 10, 12, and 15--15 are interchangeable so that all sorts of relative arrangements of successive small chambers, communicating with each other along the bottom, through the opening formed by the cut away portions of slabs 15, or communicating through the perforations 13, may be provided depending upon the shape and area of the ground which may be available for placing of the system. The slabs are made of such size and weight that they may be readily handled by two workmen who without any great skill, may readily produce from the standard slab elements, any desired septic 10.
Iclaini as my invention:
1. A septic tank formed from an interchangeable series of slab elements comprising separate top, bottom and side elements, each'of said elements having a rabbet formed along each edge of one face andof substantially one half the thickness of the slab, and a two part partition, one corner of each part being absent, substantially as shown and described.
2. A two part partition for septic tanks cooperatively formed by two slab elements,
each of which has one corner absent substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 5th day of March, A. D. one thousand nine one.
MAX R. HYMAN.
