WILLIAM R. CONGER, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOFAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,860, dated May 13, 1873; application led March 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM It. GONGEE, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Lounge, of which the following isa specification:
The invention consists in the improvement of sofa-bedsteads, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
A is the body of the lounge. B is the head.-
C represents the back, which is hinged to the frame of the seat, as represented at D D, so
that it will turn over and hang down. In this manner the lounge may be used in theV middle of the room as a double lounge whenever such use of it may be found necessary. The back is fastened up to the lounge in any substantial manner. By the mode shown in Fig. 3 a bolt, E, is fastened to the adjustable back, which engages with a socket, F, attached to the lounge. The bolt may be made to slide in and out, and be fastened by a set-screw, so that the back may be fastened in an inclined position. To the front side of the lounge I attach a similar adjustable side or shield, G, hinged to the lounge-frame and fastened inv the same manner. When the lounge is in ordinary use the shield is dropped down in j front, as seen in Fig. 2, so as to be entirely out of the way. When it is desired to use the lounge as a bed the front is turned up and fastened in any desired position, as before described. The head B ofthe lounge is'hinged to the frame, as seen at H, Fig. 1, and is adjusted as to height by means of the swivelscrew I. This screw passes through the swivelnut J, which is attached to the frame of the lounge, and is connected Ywith the swivel K, which is attached to the head. The screw is turned by means of a wrench applied at L', and as it works through the swivel-nut J the head is raised and adjusted to suit the occupant of the lounge. This arrangement renders the lounge exceedingly convenient for invalids who require frequent change of position, and does not interfere with the proper upholstering or detract from the vgenerally neat and tidy appearance of the'lounge.
This is a most convenient and desirable article for family use, and its advantages must be apparent to all.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tol secure by LettersPatent- 1. The combination of the adjustable back C, front G, and head B in a lounge, substantially as' shownand described. g 1 2. The swivel-screw I .and swivels J K, in
` combination with the adjustable head B, as
and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM R. GONGER.
