OIL-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 16, 1921.
Application filed August 13, 1919. Serial No. 317,158.
To all 'whom it may camera Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM PEP- rnns, of the city of Calgary, in the Province of Alberta and the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to improvements in oil cans, the object of which is to provide the means of preventing the flow of oil from a container through the spout by means of a double base provided with orifices in both portions, which said orifices are of such shape and size that they may be made coincident to allow the passage of oil from the container to the spout.
I accomplish this by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of the joint between the container and the spout. Fig. 2 is a view looking down from above, showing the slots in which the end of the spring engages and Fig. 3 is a view lookin up from below showing the orifices throug which the oil passes from the container to the spout, and in dotted lines, the relation of the orifices when the oil flow is cut off. Figs. 4:, 5 and 6 are similar views of a springless device, using similar elements for controlling the flow of oil.
Referring to the drawings in detail, in which similar numbers refer to similar parts- Oil is placed in the container 2, which container is provided with an internally threaded neck surmounted by a flange. Into this threaded neck an externally threaded spout base 8 is screwed. This spout base 8 may be of various forms. two designs of which :1 shown in the drawings and is provided with orifices 13 through which the oil may pass from the container 2 into the spout 1. A. flange is formed on the said base 8, and the edges of this flange are turned up so as to form a short cylindrical body, and the upper edge of the cylinder is partially closed by turning inwardly the upper edge of the base 8, as shown in detail in Figs. 1 and 4. The spout l is rigidly secured to a cut-off plate 3, similar in shape to the spout base 8. This cut-off plate 3 is placed within the base 8, and is provided with a flange which rests on the lower end of the cylindrical portion of the said base 8. A coil spring 5 is placed within the cylinder, thus formed, one end6 of which is secured to the flange of the cut-off plate 3 and the other end proects through a hole in the upper end of the cylindrical body of the base 8. A cover plate 4 is secured around the neck of the spout (l), and is provided with two holes 7 and 12 within either of which the end of the coil spring 5 engages to hold the spout in the desired position. The cut-off plate 3 secured to the lower end of the spout has orifices 14, of similar size shape and number to those in base 8, and the orifices in these two members are made coincident by a quarter of a revolution of the-spout (1). In the springless model the cut-off plate 3 has a cylindrical body with no top which fits within the cylindrical body of the base 8, a projection 10, is formed on the upper edge of the cylindrical body of the base 8, which engages in a slot 11 in the cover plate 4, so as to limit the motion, and the cover plate 4 is turned down and inwardly around the cylindrical body of the base 8 as shown in detail in Fig. 4:.
It may be found necessary in the practical application of this device to slightly modify the details of construction and I reserve the right to make such modifications within the limits of this patent.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an oil can, the combination of a spout having its lower end closed except for orifices, which said spout is mounted in a base provided with orifices similar in size and number to those in the lower end of the spout, the said spout having limited rotary motion within the said base, so that the orifices may be made to correspond with those in the said base, a cylindrical jacket around the spout formed by turning up the base, a coil spring within the said hollow jacket one end of which spring is secured to the spout and the other end passing through an orifice in the upper end of the cylindrical body of the base and engaging in holes in a covering member secured around the spout of the oil can to operate the spout for automatically cutting ofl the flow of oil from the container, and means for securing the base to the oil container, all substantially as described. a
