To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST D. CHARTERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temperature-RegulatingDevices for Incubators and Brooders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in temperature regulating devices for incubators and broodersin which the temperature within and outside the incubator or brooder to which it is attached, work together in regulatingthe heat applied to their inner chambers or compartments and its 0bj ects are:
First, to provide a temperature regulating device for incubators and brooders that will automatically control the temperature within the incubator or brooder when sudden changes in temperature occur in the weather or atmosphere outside of or 8111- rounding the incubator or brooder.
Second, to'provide a temperature regulating device for incubators and brooders that will save fuel by regulatingthe size of the flame derived from a wick burner.
Third, to provide a temperature regulating devicefor incubators and brooders that is very compact, and is inexpensive to construct.
Fourth, to provide a temperature regulating device for incubators and brooders and the like that may be used to actuate a damper or other draft regulators. I
With these and other objects in view my invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the unique arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being understood.

My improved temperature regulating device for incubators and brooders, forming the subject matter of the present invention consists of a U-shaped bracket 1 having one leg longer than the other. Fastened to the longer leg and at right angles theretois a length of tubing 2 screw threaded or otherwise suitably fastened in place, on the shorter leg of the bracket 1 is a U shaped saddle 3, adjustably fastened in place and"; having notches 4 in the upper edges ceive the trunnions 50f the counterbalanced actuating shown at 6.

The tubing 2 passes through the floor 9 of an incubator or brooder'9? into the inner compartment 10 and is secured in place by means of washer 10 andtclamp 1O"v andv also by,the outside brace 10. A spring lock-washer is shown at 11 adapted to resiliently bind the tube 2 in position.
To the upper end of the tube 2 is secured a second thermostat 12, similar to the thermostat 8 but adjusted tooperate most ellicientlybetween the temperatures of to 110 Fahrenheit,]said thermostat being held in place by a suitable yoke 13.
The thermostats 8 and 12 are kept in operative connection with each other'by means of the adjusting screw 7 and the rod 14 which passes through the tube 2, the ends of which rest against the center of each thermostat. A' wick kerosene oil burner 15, having temperature affects the flame controlling shutters 15 and actuating cranks 15 is operatively connected to the actuating lever 6 by a suitable link 16, the burner thus being provided with flame controlling mechanism actuated by the lever 6, permits the flame 17 to be automatically restricted or enlarged as the temperature 0 the incubator or brooder and the outside thermostats.
Adjustment of the screw 7 will also tend to vary the distance between the thermostat 8 and the lever 6 which will change the relative position ofthe lever 6, consequently effecting the operation of the shutters 15 in extinguishing the flame 17, as will be readily understood.
A font or tank, to which the burner is attached, is shown at 18, suspended from the floor 9 of the incubator or brooder 9 in such a manner that the flame controlling shutter cranks 15 may be operated by the actuating lever 6.
The heat derived from said burner flame may be distributed to the inner compartment 10 of the incubator or brooder 9 in various ways now being used in such structures, my invention'relating more particularly to the automatic regulation of the heat to be distributed.-
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the inner compartment of an incubator or brooder equipped with my improved temperature regulating device will be automatically protected against any changes in the temperature therein by changes in the air surrounding the incubator or brooder, as well as against changes in the conditions within said compartment, and that, therefore, the attention of an operator is greatly lessened.
The operation of my improved temperature regulating device for incubators and brooders is as follows Any changes in temperature will affect the thermostats 8 and 12, heat causing an expansion of the volatile liquid within the thermostats, bulging them out or making them thicker; cold having the reverse ac tion.
The regulating device and flame being adjusted to maintain a certain temperature within the compartment 10, a lowering or" the temperature, either inside or outside, will cause the respective thermostat to become thinner, thus allowing the actuating lever 6, by the action or the counterweight 6 to raise or swing upward a distance which, in turn, opens the shutters 15 and allows a larger flame to burn therebetween. A raising of the temperature causes the reverse of this action.
:Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character. disclosed,

2. in a device of the character described the combination of an incubator, a tube passing through a wall of the incubator, brackets supported upon the ends of the tube, a, lever situated outside of the incubator and fulcrumed upon one 01": said brackets, a rod passing through said tube, an adjustable member carried by said lever and arranged in alinement with said rod, a thermostat within the incubator and supported between one end of said rod and the other of said brackets, and a second thermostat located outside of the incubator and supported between said adjustable member and'the opposite end of said rod.

In a device of the character described, the combination or" an incubator, a standard passing through a wall of the incubator, brackets supported upon the ends of the standard, a lever situated outside of the incubator and fulcrumed upon one of said brackets, an adjustable member carried by said lever, a thermostat within the incubator maintained in position by the other of said brackets, a second thermostat located outside of the incubator and supported by said adjustable member, and a rigid connection extending between said thermostats, whereby the movements of the thermostats are transmitted to said lever. v
7. In a device of thecharacter described,
' a standard, a thermostat on one end of the standard, a lateral offset bracket on the other end of the standard and extending beyond said end thereof, a controlling lever pivoted on the bracket, a second thermostat mounted on the lever and in substantial axial alinement with said first thermostat, a connection between the thermostats whereby the effective movement of each is transmitted to the lever, and an adjustable member for varying the relative distance between the said second thermostat and the lever for the purpose set forth.
8. A device of the character described for incubators, comprising a standard to be positioned within an incubator and having a thermostat thereon in longitudinal alinement therewith, a substantially U-shaped bracket extending beyond the standard and havingone leg attached to an end of the standard, the legs of the U-shaped bracket extending substantially at right angles to said second thermostat and the lever for the purposes set forth.

The combination with .an incubator having a heating unit, of a bracket secured to an exterior wall of the incubator, a heatcontrolling lever having one end thereof connected with said heating unit and having its other end pivotally mounted on said bracket, a thermostat mounted on the lever, a thermostat mounted within the incubator, said thermostats being adapted to operate efiectively at different temperatures, a con.-
nection between the thermostats, whereby the movements of the thermostats are translever and adjustably supporting said first mentioned thermostat, a counterweight extensionfor the lever having a portion parallel with said adjusting screw extending from an intermediate portion of the lever and another portion extending beyond the pivotal point of the lever, and a clip on the portion of said extension parallel withthe screw for engaging the latter and maintaining it in adjusted positions. v
