.INGUBATOR AND BROODER.
Application filed May 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR V. HERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulare in the county of Tulare and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Incubators and Brooders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to incubators, brooders and the like,'and has for its object the provision of improved electric heating means for a device of this character.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which a Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brooder constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the brooder.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the brooder fromthe under side.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic showing of the wiring for the electric heating system.
The invention is illustrated as embodied .in a brooder having sidewalls 1, end walls 2 and a top 3. The end walls, preferably, comprise double spaced walls having an opening 4 leading from the exterior of the brooder to the space between the double end walls, and openings 5, preferably, extend from the spaces between the double end walls to the interior of the brooder. A pipe 6 may extend outwardly throughthe top of the brooder for completing the ventilation provided through the brooder by the opening 4, the spaces between the double end walls, and the openings 5.
A removable thermometer 7 may be projected into the interior of the brooder through a suitable opening 8 in the top thereof. A thermostat 9 of anywell known or preferred construction may be mounted upon a bracket 10 within the brooder, the
' ope-rating rod'll of this thermostat, preferably. extending through the top of the broodera nd engaging a spring strip 12 which is normally in contact with a contact 'pin 13. The actuating connection between 'rod 11 andstrip 12 may be adjusted in any well known or preferred manner. A terminal 14 is provided upon the contact strip 12 and a terminal 15 is similarly arranged upon the contact pin 13. A pilot lamp 17 which is a usual incandescentelectric lamp, is mounted within the brooder in a usual socket 18. A socket 19 is, preferably,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 384,777.
One of the terminals of the lamp socket 18 is, preferably, connected to the terminal 15 of contact pin 13, and the other terminal of the lamp socket is, preferably, connected to one terminal of socket 19, the other terminal of which is connected to the terminal 14 of the contact strip. Thus it will beseen that when contact strip 12 isin normal position in contact with contact pin 13, a circuit will be closed therethrough and throu h the pilot lamp and the heating wire 22. s soon as the thermostat 9 is actuated, when the desired temperature is reached in the brooder, the contact between strip '12 and pin 13 is broken and the circuit through the pilot lamp and the heating wire 22 will be consequently broken.
of insulated hooks extending along opposite walls of said chamber, an electric heating wire strung upon said hooks, a thermostat .mounted upon said chamber, and an electric circuit through said thermostat and through said heating wire.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
OSCAR W. HERD.
