UNITED STATES JOSEPH G- COUCH, 0F IBESSEMER, MICHIGAN.
MOP CLAMP AND HEAD.
Application filed March 9, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. COUCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bessemer, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in M0 Clamps and Heads, of which the followin is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a mop clamp, wherein the clamps have cooperating teeth for engaging and holding the mop in posltion, one of said clamps constitutinga head having a V- Shaped channel with hop engaging teeth therein, the other clamp being movable and including spaced rows of teeth straddling the first teeth, to insure holding the mop securely in position between the two clamps.
Another purpose involves the provision of a movable clamp having side arms mounted and movable in guides of the stationary clamp, there being a spring tensioned lever mounted on the handle of the stationar clamp and being operatively engaged wit the movable clamp, for moving the same 1n clamping engagement with the mop.
A still further purpose is to provide a device of this kind, which is simple, efficient and practical, and can be manufactured for a relatively low cost.
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter Set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view showing the improved mop clamp and head constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view longitudinally through the clamps, and showing the actuating means in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Tig. 4 discloses views of the two clamps in perspective, showing the movable clamp open.
Specification of Letters Patent.
p passing through the walls of g through the extremity of the reduced ex- .teeth. The central part of the mop Patented July 26, 1921. Serial No. 450,878.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the handle of the device, and which is provlded with a reduced extension 2, the extremity of which engages a socket 3 of the stationary clamp 4, there being a rivet 5 the socket and tension, to hold the parts together. The clamp may be constructed in any suitable manner, preferably cast, and is provided with a V-shaped jaw 6, which extends longituchnally of the clamp. The walls of this V-shaped jaw diverge, and extending from the crotch or the bottom of the space between the walls is a row of teeth 7. The ends 8 of the walls of the V-shaped jaw are flared outwardly and spaced, thereby forming guides, for the side arms 9 of the movable clamp 10, which moves in the direction of the crotch of the V-shaped jaw. This movable clamp is provided with parallel rows of teeth 11, which straddle the teeth of the V-shaped clamp or jaw, so as to pierce the mop which it engages between the 12 has thereby of the mop together. of the mop which is is placed in position adjacent the V-shaped jaw or clamp, against the teeth, then the movable clamp is operated in a direction toward the V-shaped clamp or jaw, causing the parallel rows of teeth to straddle the teeth of the V-shaped clamp, hence holding the mop securely in clamping relation between the two clamps or jaws. The guides of the stationary clamp hold the movable clamp in position relatively to the stationary clamp. The movable clamp has its arms extended and converged toward the handle. Movable upon the reduced extension of the handle is a ring 14.- substantially of the construction shown, and pivotally mounted upon the ring 14 as at 15 are the arms 16 of the actuating lever 17 The arms of the lever are detachably connected to the ring. The extremities of the extended arms of the movable clamp are hooked and are pivotally enga ed in eyes of the lever as shown at 1 8. suitable expansion coiled spring 19 is interposed between the stationary clamp and the ring, so as to actuate the ring toward the shoulder 20 of the reduced extension.
It will be noted that the construction and arrangement of the lever and its pivotal a tape 13 extending about the same, holding the strands The central portion engaged by the tape connections with the ring and the arms of the movable clamp are such that when the lever is moved to a position in contact with the handle as shown, the pivotal connection between the arms of the movable clamp and the lever have been moved to a position offset toone side of the pivot of the lever, the lever having been limited in such position by contact with the handle. When the lever is in such position and as the pivots between the arms of the movable clamp and the lever have assumed positions to one side of the longitudinal center of the handle, the
coiled spring is tending to expand, and is therefore holding the lever in contact with the handle, thereby clamping the movable clamp against the mop.
7 The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as being useful is:
'1. In a device-for the purpose indicated, a stationary mop clamping jaw, a handle therefor, said clamping'jaw having a V- shaped channel provided with a longitudinal arrangement of teeth in its crotch, a
movable jaw opposing the V-shaped channel of the stationary jaw and having parallel rows of teeth for straddling the teeth of the stationary jaw for clamping the mop therebetween and means for holding the movable jaw in clamping position with the stationary jaw.
52. In a device for the purpose indicated, a stationary mop clamping jaw having a channel provided with a longitudinally arranged row of teeth substantially centrally therein, a movable clamping jaw in parallel opposed relation to the channel and provided with parallel rows of teeth, adapted to substantially straddle the first row of teeth, for clamping a mop between the teeth, a handle for the stationary clamp, and means mounted on the handle and operatively connected to the movable clamp, for moving it toward and in clamping engagement with the mop.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature.
