UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAUDE O. LEISURE, OF BROKEN BOW, NEBRASKA.
POST-FULLER.
Application filed May 15,
To all whom it my concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE O. LEISURE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Broken Bow, in the county of Custer and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in post-pullers.
The object is to facilitate the work of removing a post or pole without the necessity of digging around it.
The present invention consists in a lever and tongs having grappling-teeth adapted to engage the post from opposite sides and gripping it more and more tightly as the power of the lever is applied on the u per ends of the tongs, thus insuring a rigid iiold and a sure and quick removal of the post from the ground.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved post-puller;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the tongs;
Fig. 3 is a detail showing one of the toothed grappling-jaws Figs. 4; and 5 are views of the strap-iron connecting the lever to the tongs;
Figs. 6 and 7 are views showing the two styles of lever-casting, one used only when two men are operating the machine, and the other when either one or two men use the machine.
A, is an upright held at the bottom in a casting 2, which has an enlarged bottom to give it an extended bearing upon the surface of the ground. 3 is a top casting secured to the upper end of the upright, and to which the operating lever 4 is fulcrumed. This comprises a handle. preferably of wood, and a short arm to which the grappling-tongs 5 are suspended by means of strap-irons 6 and 7. The grappling-ton s are pivoted together Very much like or inary ice-tongs, but are provided at the lower end with toothed grappling-jaws 8, either Specification 01 Letters Patent.

secured thereto when the tongs are made in three parts, or integral therewith when they are made of a single piece, which might be possible. These teeth are on a curved inner edge and project inwardly to engage the post from several points from opposite sides to insure a rigid hold.
At the upper ends, the grappling-tongs 5 are projected outwardly, as at 11, and provided with several holes 12 to which the straps 6 and 7 are connected accordingly as the tool is to be adjusted to different size posts in the outer holes for the smallest size posts, and inner ones for the largest, and intermediate for intermediate sizes of posts, it being possible in this way to apply the power adequate for the size of post to be drawn. This makes it possible to quickly adjust the post-puller to the size of the post to be pulled. grip the post as the lever is pulled down, and, when. a new hold is to be taken, the lever is simply lifted and the tongs take hold at a lower point. The lever is again pulled and power is applied to the post at the new hold.
My improved post-puller is adapted for one or two men, and with the operating lever in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 7 it can be operated by one or two men, whereas the form shown in Fig. 6 is to be used when only one man is operating the machine.
I claim:
A post-puller including an upright, a lever fulcrumed thereon, links extending from the lever, grappling-tongs made in pairs and pivoted together, and connected at their lower ends by horizontally-disposed grappling-jaws having an internal concaved arrangement of teeth, the upper ends of the grapplingtongs extending laterally and provided with a plurality of holes, and links extending from such of said holes as desired to a common point of support on the lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CLAUDE O. LEISURE.
The grappling-tongs.
