Description
c NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BENTON, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES H. ISBURGH, OF
MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,530, dated May 6, 1873; application filed March 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BENTON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Harness, of which the following is a specification:
1n the case of this invention, which refers entirely to a double harness, a single-harness breast-plate is used, and the collar and hames are dispensed with. The nature of the invention is fully described below.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a harness embodying my invention, in perspective. Fig.2 is a side elevation of the device, particularly referred to below, detached from the remainder of the harness. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
a is the breast-plate as used in single harness, but here represented as being used in double harness. b is the neck-strap. c is the strap which runs back to the check-rein hook. All these three straps are in the ordinary positions. d d d" d 01 are different parts of a device by means of which the single-harness breast-plate can be used in double harness, the collar and hames being done away with. The parts d d d 61 are in one piece. The part (1 is for the accommodation of the yoke-strap,which passes through it. The link at is at liberty to turn in any direction, it being a swivel turning upon the pin or neck 01,
which connects the parts or links d and d together. The part 01 accommodates an extra strap, 6, which passes through it, attaching on either side to the breast-plate a. By means of this strap 6 the breast-plate a and link L are indirectly connected. d is the part' or link through which passes an extra strap, g, passing from the said link 01' to the neckstrap b and back. The martingale is intended to pass down from the part or link 61.
This device d d d d 01 is represented in the drawing as larger, and consequently more prominent, than it is in actual use, and is metallic, and usually silver-plated. While it is not conspicuous, it will be rather an ornament than otherwise.
This arrangement, dispensing with the collar and hames, will present a neater appearance than the old method, besides being a saving of expense, inasmuch as a single-harness breastplate may be used in a double harness.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The device shown and described, and consisting of the parts (1 d d d d, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth. GEORGE BENTON.
